Hello and welcome to another edition of We're Talking Sports, I'm your host Logan Sims.
It was a high profile weekend for four of our Wolfpack teams and unfortunately NC State
came out on the losing end in all four events. The Wolfpack women's basketball team fell at
home to number 17 North Carolina in the K. Yeow Hoops for Hope game. The men nearly pulled off
an upset of the century at number one Syracuse and the Wolfpack baseball team lost its season
opener at home against Kinesios 3-0. But we start with the pack hockey team advancing to
the ACC final before falling just short in Annapolis, Maryland. The pack faced the Georgetown
Hoyas in a rematch of last year's final. The teams also squared off earlier this season with the
pack winning that contest 4-2 back in November. But the championship game was decidedly Georgetown.
The Hoyas went up 3-0 before the Wolfpack got on the board with two goals during a major penalty.
The Hoyas went on to win 4-2. NC State ends the season with 21 wins and 7 losses. They carried
five trophies home from the tournament. Coach Mike Gazillo was recognized as coach of the year.
Tyler Clutier earned defensive player of the year and Nick Kamaris was goaltender of the year. The
team also brought home a trophy for being the regular season ACC champions as well as a trophy
for coming in second place in the tournament. Back to the Hoops for Hope game where the Wolfpack
unbeaten at home in rank number 10 in the nation fell to rival Tar Heels 89-82. The loss ended a
sixth game ACC winning streak for the pack and drops them to 13-1 at home this season. Four Wolfpack
players scored in double digits in the loss and while the pack would have wanted the win the big
winner of the weekend was the Kyal Cancer Fund. At halftime a check for just under $46,000 was
presented to the fund. Perhaps the one that nobody saw coming this weekend took place in
Syracuse Saturday evening as the pack led the top ranked Orange with just seconds left on the clock.
But the Orange did what they have been doing all year in close games. They found a way to win,
holding on as TJ Warren's final jumper fell off the rim. The NC State baseball team even its
record with a 11-4 victory over the Kinesios Golden Griffins Monday. Play continues for the team
as they head to Elon Tuesday, take on North Carolina A&T Wednesday and then host a weekend
series against Appalachian State. To football where six NC State players have been named to the
All-ACC Academic Football Squad only Duke has more student athletes named to the list. To be
eligible for consideration a student athlete must have earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the
previous semester and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in his academic career. Senior linebacker
Zach Gentry earned the honor for the second time. He's joined by Bryant Sheriff's Jack Tojo,
Andy Jomontas, Brandon Mitchell and Tyler Purvis. Again, I'm Logan Sims and we will see you next
time on the Weird Talking Sports.
