I'm Peter Bailey with NBC Miami's The Nightside and I'm here inside of Top Chef's restaurant
with Gramps Morgan, member of the legendary reggae group Morgan Heritage, who's embarked
on his own musical odyssey with his debut album Two Sides of My Heart, Volume One.
You know Gramps, when I think about Morgan Heritage, I just think about a soulful music
revival.
What is the inspiration behind the conscious music?
Well, it's the lifestyle of the Caribbean, Caribbean people on a whole, full of sunshine,
good food, good vibes, as well as we've had our issues over the past, you know, 52-hundred
years, you know, from violence to, you know, colonizing and independence in every country.
But the beautiful, the most beautiful thing of the Caribbean people is the people.
How has that been?
You're collaborating with great artists, Indiare, John Legend and Buju.
How has that been?
It's been a growing process for me because as Morgan Heritage, that was one over years
we grew up together.
But touring with John Legend and touring with Indiare predominantly because she's the one
that took me on tour with my first, when I first released my first solo song, which
is Wash Tears.
And that journey has just been, it just snowballed and it went from John to, it went from India
to John and it went to Buju and ever since then it's just been a snowball effect.
Everybody's getting a chance to get into the different dimensions of Morgan Heritage and
every member sounds different.
You don't find like Peter sounds like me or Mojo sounds like Yuna.
So it's a wonderful thing and we enjoy this journey.
So who is Gramps in that dichotomy?
If I just put, if I play a Gramps album, if I play this, what am I seeing?
What am I feeling?
Well Gramps Magan brings about healing.
That's my main purpose.
I want to bring about that healing, that fun, that sunshine, that jerk chicken, sunny beach,
vibes to, you know, to bring back to the music because it's been very party and a little
violent in the past, what do I say, 10 to 15 years.
But there's been a lot of acts that's risen out of Jamaica, acts like Luciano, Everton,
Blender, Richie Spice, Taurus, Riley, that's still doing that one-drop traditional reggae
that soothes the heart.
The new song.
Yes.
I heard it's really kind of, you know, people are really taking...
Sexity, sexity.
Sexitude.
And what's the name of it?
The name of the song is called Come Back to Bed, written by John Mayer.
I'm Peter Bailey, and that was your Nightside Nightcap with Gramps Magan.
Peter Bailey and John shall wash away all the tears from your eyes in times when the
storms and the tides are raging high.
We know Peter shall win, yeah.
We know we don't survive, yeah.
Peter shall wash away all the tears.
Peter Bailey, Nightcap, Gramps Magan.
