I'm Jackie Smith and I'm an art teacher.
I'm part of the Scale Free Network Art Science Collaborative and we're a group of artists
and scientists and we do different activities at different venues that combine art and science
and look at the similarities between those things and we're here at Wendery West today
in the park, a part of a fair here and we've set up a marquee away from the elements and
we've been looking at different kinds of objects from the natural world and from the
man-made world through microscopes, some people have been drawing but it's basically
been a day where we've just been able to look closely at some really beautiful things
and see how the world looks at a different scale.
So it's about seeing patterns that you can't normally see unless you use the technology
of a microscope and being inspired by a different view of the world.
I think it's great for the community, you can see today that quite a few people know
each other and I think there's a range of activities on today and I think it's good
for people to be able to stumble across something like this that they may not have, normally
have access to.
There's been a lot of feedback about people who've never used a microscope before, both
children and adults and a lot of primary school children who may not have science programs
in their schools and just to sort of see people engage with new activity and also just be
aware of, well, on the art side that there are different ways that we can be inspired
by art but more specifically as part of free range science that there is so much excitement
and interest and value in looking at these processes of science and they can be fun.
Thank you.
