In the music department you will find a group of students working on a special kind of music.
It's a bit different than anything else you'll find around the area.
These students call themselves the Scottish Fiddlers.
It started because our professor at this college, she's our orchestra director and the violin viola instructor.
She's actually a competitive Scottish Fiddler, so she wanted to bring something to campus that was a little bit different.
There was talk about us kind of creating a group. We didn't know what that was going to look like.
If that was going to be a bunch of fiddles just kind of hanging out, but it actually turned into an actual group that meets every week, that gigs places.
So it's actually turned into something really cool.
The group is composed of violins, guitar, bass, and a single percussionist.
But what exactly is a fiddle? Is it any different than a violin?
It's more of a style of playing. The instrument is the same back in history. It was a different story, but nowadays a fiddle is the same as a concert violin.
It's called fiddling, especially Scottish fiddling, because we are incorporating some of the traditional ornaments and techniques.
I think people like it so much that aren't musical because it's different, and they're like, oh, I love fiddling. It's so much fun. It's so nice to listen to.
So I think that it's really great that our string department has something different that we can call our own.
In the end, this group is more than just students getting together and having a good time. It's truly a learning experience.
I think it's neat that we have this group because it just adds a little bit more to our department.
