could win the Sun bubble do either one of you guys have a Sun bubble believe a
day I don't have one I like that I would like for you to meet my guest
tonight Jackie Rislinger who is the what is it for County Extension agent is that
it yeah correct we just called him the ag guy you know when I was growing up in
4-H country agent yeah the county agent that's that's what he was and Brian
Quinnick who is direct president of the board of directors of the Nacogdoches
County Expo Center a lot of talk going on about what's going to happen to the
Expo Center we've always say that if we have a bad fare we were to really rain
that could be the end of it this morning when you got up and the thunder was
rolling and it was raining what did you think Brian it looked bad this morning I
thought maybe this was gonna be the year that it was gonna happen yeah and then
we just sat back and said I told you so yeah lock them doors that's right look
has been with us but it it could happen so far you bet it's been with us a
beautiful day today the fare kicked off and lots of folks out there this
afternoon it's looking good but don't know what the long-range forecast is
either actually wouldn't have to I don't think be a whole week you know you
could take a wipe out of Friday and Saturday and that'd be a pretty big
blow that's right be a big chunk and then just look when you go out to the
fair and how many people is going to be out there and look at all the faces of
the kids and all the things that are going on and just ask yourself do I
really want this place to close let's talk a little bit about the situation
with the explosive where do we stand well right now we're gonna have a
referendum come up and we're gonna ask the voters out there in the county to
vote for the county taking over the Exposition Center and actually this
referendum though it's sort of like an opinion poll it doesn't
accomplish anything right well that's right it's a non-binding referendum so
I mean the county commissioners can still vote how they want to vote but we
hope to send a loud message a very strong message to the county from the
people saying that that we want the county to get involved and make sure
that Expo Center stays open and that we can get the funding we need to make
the improvements that very necessary out there right now by the way next time
we need to run an opinion poll on how everybody feels for half the money
we're spending for the referendum I'll be willing to go door to door to every
door in the county and we can save some money and you know all that sort of
thing are you getting any feel for what people are thinking well yeah I mean you
know every time I talk to somebody out there I hear all kind of opinions and
thoughts about the Expo Center and usually it centers around people not
really knowing what's going on or why we're doing what we're doing and once
we've had a chance to talk with them then they support us and of course
everybody's concerned about the Expo Center staying open I don't think there's
any question about that I think the question is more and what we're gonna
do to keep it open and how we're trying to structure it right now I used to say
that people wouldn't get concerned about AIDS until it began to strike in our
own community and people we know and I used to say on the radio show that
people wouldn't get concerned about guns on school campuses you know until one
day suddenly there was one on one of the Nacogdocha school campuses all of that
has now come to pass and I've sort of had the feeling it might take something
drastic like closing the Expo Center for people to realize what they've lost
boy that would be a loss of them. Well it would be a loss I mean the kids 4-H and
FFA folks and all the people that participate in those activities out
there I'm not sure where they go they might have to go out of town and from
an economic standpoint a lot of people come to our community for the horse
shows and the rodeos and that makes a tremendous impact to our economy and if
you have that Expo Center closed down then a lot of businesses and a lot of
people are gonna feel the pinch. We'll do a little bit more specifically with the
fair that opened today and goes to this weekend in the second segment but I
wanted to talk to Jack a little bit I don't guess there's anybody in any
profession in town that's more directly related to the Expo Center than you are.
Can you fathom not having that facility? Yeah I really can. I came here almost
three years ago and that was was one of the things that attracted me to coming
to Nacogdoches County because I could see the progressiveness that somebody had
in past years to do something like that. Since I've been in Nacogdoches County as
I said almost three years I've had at least six or seven phone calls from
other parts of the state people who've had people who came to Nacogdoches and
attended an event at the Exposition Center who have called me wanting to come
look at it. Wanted to know if we had plans. You know some things that they were
considering building a center similar to this. They liked the way ours was was
designed and are interested in how we've done things and so forth. So sometimes
here at home maybe you don't realize exactly what you have because you're
used to it and people in other parts of the state look to us as having one of
the finest centers around. Obviously you work directly with the 4-H groups and
organizations like that and when you when you go out there this week and look
at all the livestock that's been raised and various ag products that's been
produced. I know what it's like I always had a project every year. I remember
when I was growing up I guess one night in my life I'll remember more than any. I
had some of the most beautiful corn you ever saw. I mean that was fine corn and
they had a fire in our community and like everything was burning all the
fields and everything. I literally got up in the middle of the night and tried
to figure out a way to save my corn and I went around and got all the fire hoses
I could and attached them to the water faucet and sprayed went around spraying
my corn down. Kids care about those things don't they? Each of those youngsters
out there with their animal project or whether it was a baking project or
photography project and we tend to think of the animals because I guess that's
the high profile but there's a lot of other projects that are out there too
that these youngsters have but each of those projects is a story into itself.
Those youngsters put a lot of time and a lot of effort and a lot of pride in that.
Like I say it was it was a lot of work and by the way the end of the story is I got
second place with my corn. I should have gotten first but I got second place with it.
But during the course of the year I guess probably 90% of the people in
Nacogdoches County at some time of the year that go to the rodeo go to the fair, go to the
doodad, the chili soup. I would expect so. It's the only facility in the county that
everybody uses and we're just sort of tossing the corn up and if it's heads we
lose and tails we win. Well it's family use I mean even the agricultural stuff
these animal projects are whatever involved the whole family at home and
as I like to say we're not using kids to raise these animals we're using these
animals to raise kids and all the different projects. When you see people
out there for most of the things it's a family type setting. You know we were
always talking what can we do to promote family values and families doing
things together and what can we do to help our young people and then when you
just have that opportunity just dumped in your lap you know we back off well I
don't know it might cost us a little money. I'm gonna take a break and we'll
talk about what's going on at the fair right after these words from some of the
folks that make the show possible.
I'm Stephen with Adam and Steve's Carpets on South Street. We've been in business here in Nacogdoches for over 20 years helping local folks with all their floor covering needs.
If you have a new home or would simply like to give your old home a whole new look
come shop with us at Adam and Steve's. If you're in the market for carpet, no wax vinyls,
ceramic tile, hardwood floors, wallpaper or mini blinds, we'll see to it that you
find just the products you need at a price that won't break your budget. So come on
in to see us at 1622 South Street and shop with folks who'll give you the kind
of service you used to expect from all merchants.
What I would give on hiring office workers is to let Fredonia Temporaries handle it.
They can place people on a temporary basis or full-time and if someone doesn't
fit in there's no firing or rehiring. Just call Fredonia Temporaries for a
replacement and paying a weekly bill is a lot easier than handling all those payroll
requirements. Fredonia Temporaries does that for you and all other people are
pre-screened and tested so that saves time and money. I think calling Fredonia
Temporaries just makes good business sense.
You've been to HB's Grill yet? It's a great place to relax anytime. You can start your day with our breakfast bars served hot and delicious.
For lunch, try the complete lunch buffet or just the soup salad and fruit bar. We also offer a full menu to order from including rotisserie roasted chicken, baked white fish and chicken stir-fry.
Or for extra convenience, drive up to our carry-out window and take your meal to the office or home.
So come to HB's Grill on North Street in Acadoches. A new place for great food.
It's SFA The University. Not this time. SFA stands for Starving Fabulous Artist. Starving? No. Fabulous? Yes.
Artist? Most definitely. Presents presents that are unique and the lowest priced in town. So everyone in town come and see all the unique crafts from SFAPP.
Starving Fabulous Artist presents presents located on North Street next to Griffith Hall. It's like a whole new world.
We knew to be a little guy. Craig can be vicious, can't he? I mean, you know, Craig's directing the show tonight, you know, and you know how these little pirate takes are.
I'll tell you what, because I forgot to tell you at the beginning of the commercial break that you can't call anymore.
I'll give you a couple of more minutes to call in on the great Nacogdoches giveaway and win the Sun Bobble. 5-6-4-8-3-8-6.
But in two minutes from right now, whoever's checking back there, we cut it off. Have we got a big ferry this year?
I think it's going to be a good one. We got a lot of folks out there on the first day. And I know the exhibits. The exhibit hall is full.
We haven't had that many exhibits. Not a new one. That's right. Last couple of years.
70-something, did I hear? Yes, yes. That's a bunch of them.
I saw all the young ladies out there today, the cheerleading groups. They were having their competition.
I saw you on TV earlier. Yeah, twice today. It was embarrassing, Brian, you know, because when you were supposed to be facing the camera and the cheerleader was all back here, you kept turning around during the interview.
You know, you should have done that. I was just trying to check out the midway there. That's all I was doing.
You're talking about the commercial exhibits. I don't know if people realize it.
But be sure and go buy those, because they're all giving away something. They give away pens and rulers and litter bags.
And you can stock up. You can make one little trip to every booth in the commercial exhibits, and you've got enough pens and rulers and litter bags to hold you for the whole year.
I mean, you don't have to buy anything. Seriously, they all have free giveaways. They have registrations for things.
And you can learn a lot about what's available in our area.
Jackie, what have we got going in terms of ag this year, the ag projects?
We had, of course, the home canning and the youngsters in the adult division all took place yesterday and today.
We're still learning to can. Oh, you bet. It's a revival. We've got a lot of adults who come down to the office and work with Belinda.
There's kind of a revival in that. And that's a lot of those lost hearts. I hate to see us lose that the younger people are starting to come interested in.
We've got livestock moving in tomorrow. About 7.30 in the morning, we're going to be receiving about 115, 16 swine projects.
We've got a large rabbit show. 122 rabbits this year are coming in tomorrow afternoon.
The beef cattle will start coming in. Our beef cattle show. The dairy heifers will start coming in.
The lambs will be in. I think the lamb show is tomorrow night. I can't pull the schedule up in my head right now.
The pig show will be Saturday morning. The rabbit show tomorrow afternoon at 5.
If anybody's ever curious about how they judge a rabbit, they can find out tomorrow afternoon at 5.00. Is that what it is?
I may have to go out there and represent a group. I'm not sure yet about that. I don't know anything about rabbits.
I've never been a big rabbit person. I always like the shop exhibits. Do they have some of those issues?
Those were removed in today. A lot of good ones. The excellent work that these youngsters do. Excellent work.
It's a value. What does it cost three bucks to get in for adults? If you're young enough, you get in free. How young?
I think it's under six, if I'm not mistaken.
I don't have my schedule. I don't know if you guys know offhand. I know I think tomorrow night is Buddy night.
It's like two for one on Carnival rides. Tonight is one price ride all or something. I know there are special events every night.
Another thing you haven't mentioned is all the good food out there on that midway. There's barbecue, sausage on a stick, baked potatoes, some of the best stuff.
That's all I did this afternoon was go through and sample out.
I like the smoked sausage, turkey legs, and the funnel cakes. Are there any funnel cakes? There's got to be some funnel cakes.
I think there was. It wouldn't be a fair one.
We could go out there and make food. I like to ride. Do y'all like to ride?
I'm retired.
You're retired.
I'll sneak on one every now and then.
You look like the adventurous type. Maybe the bungee jumper type.
I've been known to do a couple of adventurous things. But I haven't tried the bungee jump.
No, that's my next go. I may try the double ferris wheel this time. There's a lot of free entertainment.
There's an entertainment stage that is busy practically all the time.
There's always something going on. In fact, this afternoon they had the gymnastics at the youngsters out there.
I'm telling you what, they were just flipping and doing backflips and cartwheels and whatnot, just really putting on a show.
I feel so envious when I see them doing that. I can remember a time when I can do that.
You can remember that far back.
Well, it's real fuzzy, but I can kind of remember it.
You're printed pretty good today.
I'm getting harassed here, people. This is going downhill. I know that there's some of the twirling groups.
There's gospel singing, country singing, concerts of all types.
That's all free. That's included in the press in all part of the package.
The commercial exhibits, the ag exhibits are all part of it.
I don't know where you can spend three bucks and get that kind of entertainment.
Here or anywhere else, that's a big value.
The money's important. You're on the board too, right, Jake?
Correct.
We've got two board members here today. Boy, I am impressed.
How much does the money from the fair mean?
About what percentage of the total expenditures or the budget of the fair is it?
I think it's about half of our operating expenses.
Just about half. It always bails us out there.
That's right. It is the single largest fundraiser we have.
It's the main thing that keeps us going. That's why it's so important that we have good weather.
Most of these centers don't sponsor a fair, a county fair.
It has a county organization that does it.
The exposition center here is the one that, upon themselves, sponsors our Piney Woods Fair or a county fair.
They, of course, receive that income and, without it, we just wouldn't make it.
There's not any of these centers that are self-supporting anywhere in the state.
A lot of people don't realize that all of the other events that happened at the expo center during the year,
the rodeo and the doodat and the chili cook-off and all of that, those aren't sponsored by the expo center.
The expo center just gets rental rates from those events.
The fair is the only thing that the expo center sponsors all year long.
You know what I found out today? That there's only three people that work out there.
I think they hire a couple of others a couple of weeks before the fair.
That's right.
That is incredible.
Talking about pinching pennies, Dave and Lynette, and I think one other person are full-time.
And they hire a couple more about fair time, and everything else that happens out there is volunteer.
That's right.
How do you get involved? It's got to take a bunch of people to put together that fair.
It does. You know, setting up those stages, laying down all that carpet there on the floor and taping it all down,
helping the people move their equipment in and their projects, how those folks do it every year,
and then, of course, taking it down on the other side of it.
You know what would be neat to do some year before the fair is to sponsor tours on how the fair is put together.
It would shock a lot of people.
It really would. I was out on Monday, and they were laying all of the cables for the power to the commercial exhibits and all that sort of thing.
They already had the carpet down, they had all of the draperies up, and that is a massive amount of work.
That really is.
And we even make money off the carnival. I mean, good money off the carnival.
Yes, sir. The carnival is a big attraction, and again, that's part of the total income that we use to pay our expenses throughout the year,
so we look forward to that carnival being very successful.
So we want everything to be successful at the fair, and especially this year,
because when you walk in the gate, you are saying to the, quote, powers that be,
we like this place, and we need it.
So go out there two or three times, go every night.
All right?
Well, I'll tell you what let's do.
Why don't we give away a sunbobble, some lucky person.
Somewhere is going to win this from starving fabulous artists present presence.
The last time Bryant was on, I let him do the drawing.
And I still didn't win.
But I had, you wouldn't believe, I had calls by the twos people saying,
are you sure he didn't cheat?
I guess I'm going to have to bring in a priest sometime to do the drawing.
And everybody knows that Jackie is looking.
Everybody trusts their candy.
There's not a more honest face in the world of that, is there?
Anybody would discuss their peach trees with me would trust you.
Yeah, your peach tree is highly personal, isn't it, Jackie?
That's for a lot of people, I'll show you.
Ten thousand comedians out of work, and he's trying to be funny.
Craig's trying to take over the show in the back,
and Jackie's trying to take it over in the front.
I told you I should have dressed up.
See, when you wear, you know, casual clothes, no authority, you know.
Reach in there, Jackie.
One name calling me in there.
One name calling you.
Why don't you read the name?
Read the name.
I am.
Being fair and honest is difficult, you know.
You don't know, you've never tried it.
And the winner is?
Lucille Fulmer.
Lucille Fulmer.
Well, is that Herschel's wife?
I think it must be.
Herschel Fulmer's wife.
That's who that is, isn't it?
If not, Herschel will be calling you.
Yeah.
Congratulations, Lucille.
She was on the set one night when Herschel had on his jazzy coat
and everything watching the show,
and you can go buy SFA present presents
at the corner of North and Caroline
any time afternoon, tomorrow,
and pick out any one of these that you want,
the one that you happen to like the best.
And next week, a very special program.
We will be talking about, boy, this is hard for me to say,
Red Ribbon Week.
It always comes out with Ribbon Week.
A mighty important event.
Congratulations, Lucille Fulmer.
Dear, you've got yourself a sunbobble.
Jackie Bryant, thanks for being with us.
Thank you.
And we'll see you back here next Wednesday at 8.30 p.m.
Tomorrow morning, at 7 a.m. on 860 KSFA,
the talk of the town, until then,
bless your house, dear hearts.
Thank you.
