In this episode of Expediton part 3, you will hear a lot about fly fishing, the famous Tongariro River in the North Island of New Zealand.
Some things about the Yucca Falls next to Taupo and Waiotapu, the thermal activity close to it.
At the moment, I'm sitting here next to the Auerere River in the northern part of South Island, close to Collingwood.
And yeah, I'm at the moment waiting for the trout to feed.
And at the sea, who's first time me or the trout?
Well, after our tour through the Northlands of New Zealand, we drove straight down to Turangi, where we stayed in the Tongariro River Motel.
The owner named Ross is really awesome. He's a fly fisherman too.
So he gave me a lot of advice and one of them was to go down to the river early in the morning and have a look at the bridge pool, which is very famous.
What I saw there were heaps of fly fishermen standing in line.
That was a one-hand little chucked and the other hand, I was surprised that there were so many anglers so close to each other.
But they caught a lot of fish, so every 30 seconds they were taking one out was the size of, I don't know, 28 to 50 plus centimeters.
It was really impressive.
But how they were casting, that was really French, because for me as a beginner, I had to say it looked like they were really bad at casting.
But it was just because they had a really different setup.
I went back to my stuff and then I met Wiry.
Wiry is a Maori kid, I say he's 13 years old, I don't know.
He showed me how they are fishing, what they do, where I can join and it was really nice, I really appreciate that.
After that I fished and the first day I had a bite and Wiry told me what to do but I messed up, I lost it.
And because I didn't catch fish, Wiry gave the rod to Larissa and she fought the fish and we could smoke it afterwards at the Tongariro Reuben Hotel.
The second day I had two bites but not that much and in land one I was really disappointed.
And we took a day off and did some tourist stuff.
We went to the Buka Falls and to Waio Tapu.
We just arrived at the...
We just arrived at the...
The rain pool.
Waio Tapu.
Waio Tapu, right? She knows where we are.
Navigator.
And we'll take a look at the thermal activity here.
What's that smell?
The third day we fished together at the Blue Pool which is further upstream.
There were less people at least but it rained the whole day, it was really heavy downpour.
And after five or six hours we called it a day because we caught no fish at all.
But we decided to go to the National Trout Center that we at least could see some fish.
We were a bit disappointed after the third day we caught a fish yet.
The next day our plans were to head further in the car to Wai Tomo Caves on a midday.
We didn't have much time left but I decided to give it another try.
I went in the morning early, got up at six o'clock, seven o'clock at the river below it.
And I fished, it was still raining.
There were only two other fly fishermen at the bridge pool.
And suddenly I had a strike and a fish on and I managed somehow suddenly to land them.
So first fish, Jack.
First fish in New Zealand at this famous river and in that size that was just perfect for me.
Yeah and to finish this video thanks for listening.
I hope you enjoyed it. If you have any questions please let me know.
I'll be glad to answer them.
