way or the other they goofed up your show was tonight and I didn't want to compete with
them well they called us they wanted to have it on Wednesday night and I simply told the
president no this time you know the state union deserves an audience and you know all
that sort of thing we have got something to give away tonight if I can pick it up and

who is a gastronomologist on the staff at Memorial Hospital our subject will be liver
disease and don't forget the breakfast club is for you you can it's like seeing the doctor
for free and come out you get a free continental breakfast and we have a lot of fun Friday
morning at eight o'clock in the bright pavilion at the hospital for those of you who watch
the radio show week or so ago I had this lady on and we talked about a big upcoming
event and we wanted to have a chance for you to meet the folks involved on TV tonight and
I would like for you to meet Sandra Carroll who is say if I get this right you are director
of the miss east Texas pageant that's correct and the miss east Texas teen pageant yep we
sure are it's only taken me a couple of weeks to get it but I got it right so you know that
that's pretty good for me by the way don't forget you can start calling now five six
four eight three eight six all you got to do is call give your name we'll have a drawing
at the end of the show and you could win our prize first of all tell me about the pageants
this is sort of two pageants in one right yes Norm it is by the way thank you for having
us on this evening we'll be having two pageants we have the teens which is ages fourteen through
eighteen and the miss competition which is nineteen through twenty six and it's open
to any young lady that wants to participate that's correct I would assume you have not
had male applicants yet no no male applicants it'll come some day you know it's gonna happen
one of these days who is this lovely lady sitting here this is Melissa Cooper she is
miss Nakadotcha's teen USA nineteen ninety three she represented us at the miss texas
teen USA pageant oh that's quite an honor in it yes it was very fun when did you start
out in pageants well I did some pageants when I was young about place six and I did some
when I was twelve and when I was fourteen this is my first really big one and it was so fun
I had so much fun I met so many people I learned so much it was just the funnest thing I have
done I learned how to interact with people and there was a hundred and twenty two of us
so it was really hard trying to get along with them but it was really fun at the same
time and my roommate you never know how hard it is to get along with someone until you
see all their clothes everywhere you see all your clothes everywhere and you're like I
gotta find my clothes and so it was kind of it was a it was a challenge and where was
the miss teen texas pageant hill it was in Houston huh in houston at the double tree
yeah at the double tree I bet that was fun is there is there a little you know behind
the stage rivalry among the girls I don't think so I don't think so at all I mean yeah
you want to win and but you're not going to do something to hurt somebody else it's
not quite as violent now as say figure skating no no it's not there's not quite in that
lead not not yet now your term will come to an end I guess at the pageant well I miss
nackadoches and the pageant is missies texas oh okay all right so uh when does your term
end as miss nackadoches next at the um east at the miss texas teen us a pageant all right
now this is uh the winner of this pageant could go all the way to the miss universe pageant
right that's correct now what's what's the tier one of the different levels first you
have your local level which is the missies texas usa then they'll compete for miss texas
usa miss usa and then miss universe now our teens compete for miss texas usa and then to
miss texas I mean to miss teen usa that's the highest level for the teen competition
now uh how does these pageants from from the local level all the way up to uh the miss
universe pageant how do they differ from the same tier of pageants going to miss america
miss america uh contributes a lot towards a talent competition is one of the big differences
you have your local area pageants and then you have your shape pageant and then it's
just miss america they don't get the opportunity to go on to miss universe okay now first of
all when is the event here the event here will be held february 26th and 27th at the
fredonia convention center and uh as I say it uh it uh will be a saturday a sunday a
whole weekend uh girls will be coming in from all over east texas and what do they do you
know do they just uh all sit around out in front of the fredonia and wait for the pageant
well what do they do I think they wish they could yeah now we're definitely we definitely
wish we could it's going to be a very busy weekend yes it is it starts off with eight
o'clock rehearsals and they have rehearsal all the way up to 30 minutes before competition
time we give them a couple hours for their lunch break and their dinner break and that's
about it we work them pretty hard by the time they arrive until their competition starts
well now what do they do because uh on on television when you see pageants it all looks
so glamorous and so easy and and as we've said it's a lot of work what uh kind of step
by step what will they be doing that we can well like I said at first they'll arrive and
we'll have check in and we start with rehearsals we're during rehearsal we'll figure out lineup
and we have to line people up according to height so that everyone can be seen on stage
you have an opening number production and then you the girls that haven't had experience
you try to teach them you know a little bit of how to walk how to stand how to you know
how to model in front of the judges you help them get over those jitters a little bit uh
they'll compete in three different phases which will be swimsuit evening gown and interview
and I would assume the interview portion is pretty important it's a very important part
uh they'll be doing a private one on one interview for three minutes with each judge
on what topics is it like just random conversation or is it structured or no it's it's more
of a random conversation the judges have an opportunity to ask them about uh their views
on current events their family their goals uh their preparation for the pageant anything
about anything if if you were uh giving advice if a contestant came to you and said uh what
should I do what kind of advice would you give a contestant well I would tell them to
definitely do it anybody should do it it's the best experience I've ever had um I would
tell them just to be themselves for sure because if you act fake it's not going to get you
anywhere and the more real you act the better off you'll do so for sure be yourself and
for sure do it now there's been a little talk about pageants over the years uh you know
as to what good they accomplished and you seem real excited about it uh what is the
number one thing that it does for a girl why should a girl enter it helps you to interact
with other people and it helps like in the job in the job field you can you know how
to talk to people because you're with adults a lot you're with the judges you have a three
minute interview with them and there's nine judges there wasn't the state pageant and
so you have to talk to nine judges for three minutes and you can say a lot in three minutes
definitely take it from me I know uh what if what if somebody's watching and I'm sure
this is happening and they're saying I don't have a chance uh did you ever feel that way
definitely I was like I don't think I at first I was really scared to go to state but the
girl that won at state she she I was talking to her and she said that she didn't think
she had a chance she had gone three years in a row and this was her fourth year and
she won so anybody has a chance to win so you can do it if you try yes uh when we come
back from the break we're going to meet I believe a contestant in this year's pageant
and uh we'll we'll go from a season pro to one that's uh attempting to do this and I
would like to congratulate you I think you are a an excellent uh representative for
Nacogdoches and thank you for being with us thank you and uh you'll you'll have a shot
to see her at the end of the show and in the meantime we'll be right back don't forget
to call five six four eight three eight six I'm Steven with Adam and Steve's Carpets
on South Street we've been in business here in Nacogdoches for over twenty years helping
local folks with all their floor covering needs if you have a new home or would simply like
to give your old home a whole new look come shop with us at Adam and Steve's if you're
in the market for carpet no wax vinyl ceramic tile hardwood floors wallpaper or mini blinds
we'll see to it that you find just the products you need at a price that won't break your
budget so come on in to see us at sixteen twenty two south street and shop with folks
who'll give you the kind of service you used to expect from all merchants I would give
on hiring office workers is to let Fredonia temperates handle it they can place people
on a temporary basis or full time and if someone doesn't fit in there's no firing or rehiring
just call Fredonia temperates for a replacement and paying a weekly bill is a lot easier than
handling all those payroll requirements Fredonia temperates does that for you and all other
people are pre-screened and tested so that saves time and money I think calling Fredonia
temperates just makes good business sense you've been to HB's Grill yet it's a great
place to relax anytime you can start your day with our breakfast bar served hot and
delicious or lunch try the complete lunch buffet or just a soup salad and fruit bar
we also offer a full menu to order from including rotisserie roasted chicken baked white fish
and chicken stir fry or for extra convenience drive up to our carryout window and take your
meal to the office or home so come to HB's Grill on north street in acadoches a new place
for great food it's SFA the university not this time SFA stands for starving fabulous
artist starving no fabulous yes artist most definitely presents presents that are unique
and the lowest priced in town so everyone in town come and see all the unique crafts
from SFA PP starving fabulous artist presents presents located on north street next to Griffith
Hall it's like a whole new world welcome back don't forget if you'd like to win our number
one teacher decorator give us a call right now five six four eight three six you've
got just about five minutes to get your name in the hopper and at the end of the show we
will have the drawing we just have a bevy of beauties around here I believe you told
me on the radio show center that you participated in pageants when I was younger I did in high
school I competed in a few you notice I don't talk much about it but see you have that style
well thank you and maybe that's something that a girl gains from pageants is there is a special
kind of poise I've had several friends who were involved in the Miss Texas pageants one
who went on to be Miss Texas and they all have that one thing in common and that is this this
poise a certain way of of acting and everything you learn to gain a little bit more self confidence
when you compete in pageants and you're preparing for pageants your self confidence your self
esteem seems to grow now one thing let's clear up in case somebody is interested can people
still get in on the pageant yes they can and they can call crown productions of east Texas
at five six four three six two zero you better give them that number again real slow five six four
three six two zero okay everybody gets the number the first time except I've got one lady that
watches we've never met but people tell me that it takes her a long time to get her pen out we
give you the number at the end of the show we have another lovely lady would you introduce her please
this is why she's going to be a miscontestant in the missies texas usa pageant hi how are you is
this your first time i know it's not i competed in a pageant as a teen and i won miss fort ben
county team miss fort ben county huh uh what do you do now i go to school at steven f austin
and uh what year are you in i'm a freshman there you are a freshman you're a task who were down in
houston in sugarland actually and you want miss fort ben county yes so you're going to come up here
huh try to miss east texas yes i'd enjoy that uh how did you get involved in pageants the people
that made my prom dress had sponsored a pageant and they told me that they'd really like to sponsor me
and um i was quite nervous i was afraid to go into the pageant scene because i'd never done it before
and i thought that the only people that were in pageants were girls that had done it since they
were two and uh and they said no go for it it's a lot of fun and i went in and i had a great time
and i made a lot of good friends and i ended up going all the way and winning okay i told sandrel
on the radio show uh i used to judge uh the little girls pageants the little bitty girls pageants
which was fun except dealing with the moms uh uh you know what uh little league baseball parents
are like way uh you can imagine what pageant moms are like the little bitty ones you know
that that is more dangerous than i thought uh was your mom a pageant mom no she's quite the
opposite um i've seen a lot of pageant moms actually and they get more involved in the pageant than
the girls do and it's not fun for the girls when it's like that my mom and dad said tina go for it
you know if you win it's great but if not hey you had fun and you tried and you know you got a weekend
to go dress up and have fun i think that's uh great now what do you do to prepare for a pageant
you know some way or the other i guess you want to be unique from all the other contestants uh
you want to stand out in some way or the other maybe in several ways what do you do to prepare
for a pageant well i work out every day i run two miles a day uh watch what i eat um when i look for
a dress for uh the pageant my mom goes with me always and um and she picks out a dress that
just looks like me that doesn't look like it's too gaudy or that it's just trying to be something
that i'm not and um that's how i prepare for it best you seem like you're very much yourself thank
you uh does it um would it crush you to lose no actually because uh when i went into the first
pageant i wasn't going in to win i had no idea that i would win there were girls in there that
had been in pageants all their lives and um i went in there as a newcomer and i just went in to
have fun and get the experience of um getting a lot of poise and you learn to be a true individual
on stage because you're up there by yourself now what about uh the uh the the interview sessions
are those rough on you the interview actually was my favorite i thought that it would be um
the easiest but it was the hardest and um that's your time to actually be yourself um you just have
to tell the judges exactly how you feel and when they see the real you it shines through more than
um a pretty face or a great figure in a bikini there have been a lot of famous people uh who have
won pageants uh there have been a lot of ladies who have lost pageants and become on uh going on
to be very famous uh is there someone uh that you admire a whole lot somebody that's almost a role
model who's been a pageant winner or a pageant loser actually now my role model is my dad and
i don't really see him being in a beauty pageant yeah i that would that would be maybe the first
male we were talking about why why why is he such a role model for you uh he was great uh when i was
growing up he always taught me to be patient and to think things through and um he was always the
most kind and sincere man and he is incredibly smart he kept going back to school to get more degrees
and he's just been the greatest person in my life isn't that a great tribute i think that's
marvelous to be able to say that um i can see why you're entering okay uh while we still have time
i want to give everybody all the details again first of all you can enter there's still time if
you're between the ages of 14 and 28 no 26 14 and 26 uh you can enter and what's the phone number
it's five six four three six two zero okay and uh it's the weekend of february 26 and 27th uh the
as i understand that the headquarters for all this will be the fredonia right that's correct uh so
that will be a behave of activity uh that that particular weekend everyone needs to come out
and watch they'll if they don't have anyone there they'll enjoy the show yeah what time is the is
the the i call it the biggie what is it the final the finals will be held sunday at two o'clock in
