this beautiful handcrafted elephant notepad. Isn't that neat?
I think we should get one for your desk.
That'd be great. I could find out where my desk is.
A gentleman with the name of Pot Mercer whom everybody apparently knows but me.
Pot sometimes come out of the radio station and we'll meet.
But we'll have a drawing at the end of the show and we will give this away.
All you have to do is to call in tonight and register your name during the show.
Don't start calling yet. I'll tell you when to call.
Anything happening this week?
Yes, the Texas Center for the Cultural Arts has a goal.
And that goal is to build an East Texas Cultural Arts Center here in Nacogdoches.
So this weekend, this Saturday, at Nacho Mama's, they will have a
what's called an evening musical festival featuring very, very talented musicians and singers.
And it will be from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m.
And a $2 donation will help to fund this very important cultural arts center.
For a six hour show.
And I'm sure they will take more on donations if you choose to do that.
I think that would be absolutely great.
And I heard some of these musicians this morning.
They were wonderful. Very talented.
You will enjoy it. That'll be Saturday night at Nacho Mama's.
And again, $2 from 6 p.m. until midnight.
Now, give us a chance about a minute to get into the commercial break
and start calling 5-6-4-8-3-8-6.
And you could be the winner of our Elephant Notepad
from Starving Fabulous Artists Present Presence.
We're going to be back with something incredible right after this.
People working closely together in a law has become a team
and finding qualified replacements can really be time-consuming.
With one of our staff at a long-term illness,
Fredonia Temporaries took care of everything, saving us valuable time.
Fredonia Temporaries sent someone who fit right in.
They handled payroll costs like workers' compensation and unemployment insurance also.
I really recommend Fredonia Temporaries to anyone
who's thinking of hiring office help.
I'm Stephen with Adam and Steve's Carpets on South Street.
We've been in business here in Nacodotas for over 20 years,
helping local folks with all their floor-covering needs.
If you have a new home or would simply like to give your old home a whole new look,
come shop with us at Adam and Steve's.
If you're in the market for carpet, no-wax vinyl, ceramic tile,
hardwood floors, wallpaper, or mini-blinds,
we'll see to it that you find just the products you need
at a price that won't break your budget.
So come on in to see us at 1622 South Street
and shop with folks who'll give you
the kind of service you used to expect from all markets.
It's SFA the University.
Not this time, SFA stands for Starving Fabulous Artist.
Starving? No. Fabulous? Yes.
Artist most definitely presents presents
that are unique and the lowest priced in town.
So everyone in town come and see all the unique crafts from SFAPP.
Starving Fabulous Artist presents presents
located on North Street next to Griffith Hall.
It's like a whole new world.
I'm Norman Johnson of KSFA Radio
and host of The Breakfast Club,
a popular medical talk show sponsored by
Nacodotius Memorial Hospital.
Every Friday from 8 until 9 a.m.,
the hospital serves up the latest medical information
along with a complimentary continental breakfast
including shipply donuts.
My guests are hospital physicians
and healthcare professionals from throughout the area.
Join me here at Nacodotius Memorial Hospital
every Friday for this exciting talk show event.
Later in the show I'll be telling you
about this week's guests.
And this coming Friday morning
at Memorial Hospital during The Breakfast Club,
we have a very special program.
We hope that you'll come down and join us
and enjoy the free breakfast.
Memorial has a brand new
Occupational Health and Rehabilitation Center,
Lynn Smith, the director of that center,
will be my guest along with Lori Hurst
who is in charge of physical therapy at the hospital,
especially if you are in business.
You need to be there at 8 o'clock Friday morning
The Breakfast Club at Memorial Hospital.
Don't forget you can begin calling right now
564-8386 and you can win this beautiful elephant
notepad handcrafted by Pot Mercer
from starving fabulous artists present presents
at the corner of North and Carolyn Street
and we'll have a drawing at the end of the show.
I said tonight's show is different.
I thought I knew about every group
and every activity that could come along.
Having done the radio and the TV show for so long,
I was wrong.
I'm about to show you a brief film clip
that you're going to see something absolutely incredible.
Just look at this.
Sherry Heck is with me
and Jim Heck and Jewel.
This is so astounding for a person like me
who has never known of this program before.
What is special about Jewel?
Jewel is a certified assistance dog.
She is my helper
where people have heard about the leader dogs for the blind
while she is my muscles.
I have a muscle disorder.
Many of us live through the era
when polio was such a dread disease.
You were a victim of polio.
At what age?
Eleven months.
At that time it only affected my left leg below the knee
and now I have what is called post-polio syndrome.
It is the later effects of what polio has done.
The muscle cells are dying
is basically what it amounts to.
It's called progressive neuromuscular disease.
So any way that I can conserve my muscles,
obviously it doesn't look like anything is wrong with me,
but any way that I can conserve my muscles,
it's very necessary.
Well, thank you.
I'm sure people looking would say there's nothing wrong.
How did Jewel come into your life?
Well, it was quite by accident.
I was a member of a group called Texas Therapy and Companion Pets
and they needed a foster home for a shepherd.
So my family and I decided to take on that challenge
and before long Jewel and I had bonded
and I was just in the right place at the right time.
I needed her.
My left side had gotten much weaker
and I found out that the disease had damaged
eight of twelve of my cranial nerves.
So the name of the game was conserving
and Jewel was for that reason.
How was Jewel when you first saw her?
I got her when she was a year and a half
and she just turned three in June.
Brent Lindsey is with us.
Brent, as you well know, is director of the United Way
and we're doing a series of shows
on how the United Way helps people.
Tell me the relationship between United Way
and Texas Therapy and Companion Pets.
This is a new agency that the United Way took on
in Nacodotius County this year.
Gene Witt, who I've known for some time,
contacted me about funding from the United Way.
They needed money to assist them
in getting animals to train for these purposes.
So she came before the B&A committee
and Sherry and Jewel came at that time
and made a presentation and the board
decided to take them on as an agency
and we're very pleased that they are one of our agencies now.
We hope that in the future we'll be able
to fund them more fully than we can now.
Is this a program that's just beginning
to get started in Nacodotius?
Yes, I'm not sure how long it's been in existence.
It's in Lufkin basically now,
but they're trying to get it into the Nacodotius area
as a permanent fixture here in our county.
During the second segment,
we'll be showing you just some incredible things
that Jewel can do.
I wouldn't have believed it if somebody had told me,
unless somebody had told me.
Before we do that, how are we coming along
on the United Way?
Today we reached 50% of our goal,
which is 185,000,
so we're at 92,500 dollars.
Things are starting to pick up finally.
It's been real slow.
I'm not sure why, but it's starting to pick up now.
The university will report tomorrow,
so we're looking for a good report out of them.
Well, that should just put us way over the top.
We're still hoping to reach that goal.
And a number of industries are still to be heard from
and all that sort of thing,
but we're already halfway there.
Now, I'm doing this just as a little incentive.
Our neighbors across the river
just announced this week they've reached their goal.
That means that's added incentive
for Nakadotius to reach their goal.
And we're making every effort,
both here on the TV show and on the radio show,
to acquaint you as fully as we possibly can
with what the United Way is doing locally,
because the money stays here.
We want to get that across.
The money stays here.
And it helps people like Sherry and so many others.
We had a board meeting at the Adult Learning Center,
which I have the privilege to serve as president
of that institution the other night.
And, you know, it's just awesome
what we're able to do down there now
in teaching adults to read and write
and adding to the quality of their life.
That's just one organization of many
that just really couldn't make it with that United Way.
The Learning Center, as you said,
the people that do learn to read and write at an advanced age,
it's nothing but good for them and our community.
It's most productive and it's better for us.
It's very possible that there may be businesses
or individuals out there
that have not been contacted about United Way.
Sometimes we miss a few people.
We'll be doing a phone solicitation tomorrow
out of Stonefort Bank,
the chairman of that division,
Ron Collins and George Wilkes,
whom you know are going to be doing that.
And we're going to be trying to pick up
on all the smaller businesses
that have not been contacted personally.
We'd love for them to donate.
Tomorrow all day from 9 until roughly 4.
All right, so George is going to be busy.
George is the owner of Q107,
KSFA Key and your local radio stations.
So that's good.
As I said, when we come back,
we're just going to show you some things
that are just incredible.
And sure, this dog is like an extension of you, isn't it?
Exactly. She is my soul mate.
That's just incredible.
And you'll have a chance to see
what a tremendous help Julie is to Sherry.
And hopefully this year and in years to come,
there'll be a lot of individuals
who need this service
that will be able to help it
or to get the service only
if the United Way campaign is successful.
So we'll be looking forward
to telling you something about that.
So we're going to take a quick break.
You still have time to call through this commercial break.
564-8386.
And we'll have the drawing at the end of the show.
And you could win our prize of the night
from starving fabulous artists present presence.
And we'll be right back.
I'm Stephen with Adam and Steve's Carpets on South Street.
We've been in business here in Nacodotus
for over 20 years helping local folks
with their floor covering needs.
If you have a new home
or would simply like to give your old home
a whole new look,
come shop with us at Adam and Steve's.
If you're in the market for carpet,
no wax vinyls, ceramic tiles,
hardwood floors, wallpaper, or mini-vines,
we'll see to it that you find just the products
you need at a price that won't break your budget.
So come on in to see us at 1622 South Street
and shop with folks who'll give you
the kind of service you use to expect from all merchants.
I would give on hiring office workers
is to let Fredonia Temperate handle it.
If people on a temporary basis are full-time
and if someone doesn't fit in,
there's no firing or rehiring.
Just call Fredonia Temperate for a replacement
and paying a weekly bill is a lot easier
than handling all those payroll requirements.
Fredonia Temperate does that for you
and all other people are pre-screened and tested,
so that saves time and money.
I think calling Fredonia Temperate
just makes good business sense.
You've been to HB's Grill yet?
It's a great place to relax anytime.
You can start your day with our breakfast bar
served hot and delicious.
For lunch, try the complete lunch buffet
or just the soup salad and fruit bar.
We also offer a whole menu
from including rotisserie roast with chicken,
baked white fish and chicken stir-fry.
Or for extra convenience,
drive up to our carrier's window
and take your meal to the office or home.
So come to HB's Grill on North Street in Nakhadoches.
A new place for great food.
It's SFA, the university.
Not this time.
SFA stands for Starving Fabulous Artist.
Starving, no. Fabulous, yes.
Artist, most definitely.
Presents, presents that are unique
and the lowest price in town.
So everyone in town come and see
all the unique crafts from SFAPP.
Starving Fabulous Artist presents presents
located on North Street next to Griffith Hall.
It's like a whole new world.
A whole new world.
Shari, your life would be
much, much more difficult without you.
Yes, yes.
Now, again, I find this incredible
and I think you will too.
Not only is you your soulmate
but also a helpmate, right?
Yes.
What can she do to make your days better?
We're going to demonstrate some things for you.
We saw in the clip, for example,
she'll take the trash out,
load the washing machine.
Did she take them out of the washing machine
and put them in the dryer?
She didn't do that.
We'll perfect that.
She doesn't take the trash out
but she will bring my groceries in
from the van into my kitchen
when I go to the grocery store.
I'll show you that.
Why don't you lead us through
some of the things that you can do?
In a grocery store,
a lot of times when we go to the grocery store,
I'll drop a can or something
and she can pick the can up.
She'll take...
Maybe it's not her favorite kind of bead.
Good girl.
Look at that.
And, of course, in the kitchen,
take...
Good girl.
So if you drop something,
you don't have to worry about falling
or anything like that.
Jewel up.
I always drop coins.
Jewel up.
Take.
Hey, that could be profitable
by just taking a jewel around
and when you see pennies and nickels
and quarters laying on the street,
let her pigment.
I want to point out,
the first thing I ask Sherry,
the bags on Jewel,
this is in effect your purse.
Yes.
I can no longer carry a purse.
And so with the satchels,
she's always with me,
so I've got all my stuff.
You don't have to worry
about purse snatchers, do you?
Right.
I mean, you know,
you might as well forget about it.
All right, let's assume that
since you're not able to
move fast or quickly
or abruptly,
and the phone rings.
What do you do?
Well, I brought a prop phone
that I take with me
on demonstrations.
Jewel up.
I have a portable phone
at the house,
so she'll bring that to me,
but I have to show her
here where it is.
Jewel, look, phone.
Take.
Take phone.
Good girl.
Good girl.
Good girl.
Stop that.
You know, this could be
the beginning of something great,
you know.
I can just see in years
to come every office
we'll have a dog
that will answer the phone,
you know.
And if we can just teach her
to talk now,
I guess in her own way
she does talk, doesn't she?
We can communicate
with each other very well
during the day.
She knows when I'm having
a good day
and she relates to that.
And at the same time
she knows when I'm having
a good day,
she knows when
she's going to work
in an environment like this
it's a little bit new to her,
but at home
in her own environment
or at our regular stops
like at the grocery store
and that sort of thing,
she's very much a worker.
In fact, she gets really
exasperated if I have a bad day
and she doesn't have
anything to do,
she just kind of sits
down in homes.
And it can lead
to all kinds of
humorous situations.
Your husband Jim
was telling me,
and Jim is just right
next to Sherry,
just off camera,
and he was telling me
about some experiences
in a restaurant.
Tell me about one of those.
I went to Houston
and I was staying in a hotel.
I was fixing to go see
my doctor the next day
and it was raining
to beat the band,
so I was the only one
in the restaurant
at about five that evening
with Jewel
and when I walked in
the waiter stayed
on one side of the room
and I walked to the other side
to be by the window
and he yelled at me
and he said,
do you need something?
And I said,
yes, I'd like a menu
and he says,
well, what about that dog?
I said, no, she doesn't read.
People can get really
testy and rude
and so it's very important
to maintain a sense of humor.
Oh yeah, I can imagine.
You have a delightful attitude
about not only your illness
but you have this beautiful
attitude about life.
There are certain people
that glow
and you're one of those people
that glows.
I didn't glow
when I found out about this.
I was very bitter
for about three months
and then I kept waking up
every day saying,
well, what is there?
What can I do in life
that's going to be important now?
And finally one day
I got tired of wallowing
around in the pity
and just got up
and said, okay, this is it.
This is what I've got to do
and I would much rather be happy
than bitter.
It's a lot less wear and tear
on the body.
And not only that
but Jewel was
needing a companion too
when you and Jim
adopted her.
So not only did she
contribute to your life
you contribute to her life.
Right, right.
And it's so ironic
because I collect angels.
I love angels
and I've got angels
all over my house
and it was so funny
because my husband
just rolls his eyes
every time I bring
an angel in
but she is my earth angel.
She really does help me so much.
The physical aspect
is one thing
but these animals also
have a very strong
profound emotional impact
on a person's life.
I thank you for being with us.
Just hang on a minute, Brent.
I especially thank you
for bringing us these guests.
This was absolutely marvelous.
It's a wonderful program.
Someone has a reason
for not giving to the United Way.
This is a good reason.
That's right.
You know if you can
turn United Way down now
well I won't say that
but you know what I'm thinking
don't you agree.
And this is just one little part
of the United Way effort.
Now we're going to come back.
Lil will join us.
She'll bring the basket in
with all the names
and we will have a drawing
and we will give away
our elephant notepad
right after this
from some of the folks
that make the show possible.
