As we get older, we get a little slower, we get a little less muscle, we get a little
less speed, but I think the more we push it and try to maintain to what we do have, the
farther we can take ourselves.
My name is Jose Postigo, I am an Olympic weightlifter and I am 71 years old.
I have a lot of experience, I have been in sport for about 58 years.
I am now a US citizen and I live in Orlando.
I still participate in sport of weightlifting.
It is easier because it is an individual sport, it is more difficult for me to play volleyball
because I would not be able to get six other guys to play with or against.
When I went to Puerto Rico, I was playing baseball and volleyball.
Then I entered into the weightlifting because a friend of mine thought that I could do well
in weightlifting so I started training in weightlifting and I went to the competition
in Puerto Rico, the Novis, which are the new ones, in 1957, that's 50 years ago.
I won the title of champion in the island for that category for the Novis.
Then next year I went to the juniors and I won again and I passed to the seniors where
I got the championship in 1961.
I went down back to Santo Domingo because of the training I had performed in Puerto
Rico and I was able to win and then I started participating for my country in international
events.
I went to Jamaica in 1962.
Back to Puerto Rico in 1966, I went to Chicago for the 59 Panamericans.
I went to Austria, Paso, Texas in Dominican Republic.
I broke the record.
I went for Nicaragua, Salvador.
I broke the record for that time.
I won Central American Games in Puerto Rico.
I won the title of champion.
I held the championship for about nine years.
I won in the Panamerican.
I broke the record, the old-time record.
This has been some of the highlights.
Now I have been suffering from injuries and when you are old, it's very difficult to
record.
So I post absent from the platform for two years.
In 2005, I won the championship.
I am Panamerican champion and I'm expecting to repeat today because I'm defending the
championship.
All the people are trying to win.
So I'm back in the platform.
I won last year and I will try to win this year too.
His purpose in being here today is to test himself.
To test himself against the weights and also test himself against father time.
As we get older, we get a little slower.
We get a little less muscle.
We get a little less speed, but I think the more we push it and try to maintain to what
we do have, the farther we can take ourselves, both in health fitness but also mental fitness.
I just think that every time he comes back and comes away with a state title, he feels
pretty good that he can then set up and have some goals for next year again.
When you are in competition, you have three chances.
I have four.
If I fail, my second, attend.
You have three chances.
I was very sad because I didn't want to finish like that.
You have to try.
If you really want to do your best, you have to try.
I really believe in the motto, not only that sport is for all ages, but if within you you
have done your best, then you are already a winner.
I really believe in the motto, not only that sport is for all ages, but also that sport
is for all ages.
Thank you.
