I started talking to Christina at four o'clock in the morning on skites and we basically
taught for good three hours. He had seen a video by another photographer that basically
did the same thing. I thought the idea was really unique and unlike anything I'd ever
seen. Ryan Hughes' website has behind the scenes and the actual final product. So I
watched this so I thought I'm almost a graduating senior so why not do something big and kind
of elaborate. So we had to have 12 consistent cameras so we checked out 12 Canon 30Ds. When
I got there it was Nathan's brother Cathy and our friend Sean so it was only us setting
up in the morning. That's when we really started realizing what we were in for. We were broadcasting
live from Ustream. We had this set up from the second we got into the dance studio. We
actually had John Lisbon one of the instructors was looking at it and then Greg Blackman another
instructor actually came in during the day so there was definitely a lot of interest right
from the beginning. It was kind of a variety of dance. We had African contemporary jazz.
A lot of them were very contrasting styles. Ballet, hip hop, beat boys, break dancers.
The diversity of the project is what I think really makes it. I actually got involved with
the 360 project by my friend Kendra Denard who I danced with at the August Wilson Center
Dance Ensemble. As a dancer we only get the 2D version of the dancer but there's so much
going on.
It was a little alarming at first for some of the dancers because they walked into a
completely pitch black room. I was a little shocked because everything was completely
black. I was like, so how are they going to take a picture of us? It was something like
out of the movie because there was only a little tiny light in the center. Then they
turned on the lights and you just see these cameras around. I'm looking and it's like
okay we're going to push them all at the same time like who's we? Then I see like 6
other people come out and they're like okay. Nate was awesome in trying to really learn
about who we are as dancers and what we do. He made us feel so comfortable and as unique
dancers he didn't try to make us all look the same. He was very open to okay this is
the style that you chose. Show me what this style is. You really get to see the whole
picture for this project. This is what I've seen until far and that's really amazing.
