we make coatings as thin as 10 nanometers which is very very thin for electronics and medical applications

we study nanotechnology for biomedical applications such as imaging of let's say your brain, your heart, your kidneys
and the way we do it is we take graphene and manganese which is a chemical element to help better image these tissues

Nanotechnology is used in paints to improve the quality of it, to improve its durability
to improve let's say if it's a paint on metal it might improve the rust resistance
if it's a paint for your house it might improve the way the paint cleans up when you scrub the wall
let's say the dog comes in and shakes water all over the wall and you can't have that dirt on the wall
you want to scrub it and you want it to be durable and when you do that you want to have it clean up nicely

So nano basically means anything below 100 nanometers in one dimension
so these are different sizes of gold so this is 10 nanometer, 30 nanometer, 50 nanometer, 70 and 100 nanometer
they change, the light starts to scatter right around 50 you see
it starts to scatter a little around 30 but you can't really see it
and then 50 you start seeing the scatter and then look how much it becomes opaque at 100 nanometer
but the transmission of the light is different
you know it's almost pink there but it doesn't work
you only move it by 30 nanometers which doesn't sound like a lot
but it's a big optical difference
so nano gold is used for a lot of things because it's so brightly colored you can use it for diagnostic tests
like if you have a pregnancy test or different things like that you can use gold for

I think nanotechnology really has the potential to change the way we live our life
and change the world in general when it comes to the technologies that we enjoy in civilization

that just wouldn't be possible without the ability to make these materials so small
so that their properties actually change and we can use them in a functional way
