Thank you for watching!!
Good evening dear hearts and welcome to the show I'm Norman Johnson I would like
for you to meet my blushing bride my co-host here and at home. This is Lil, how
are you? I'm fine. You're looking good. Thank you. I have decided tonight on the
Great Nacogdoches giveaway I'm not gonna give it away. I know you want that
you collect clowns. I love clowns. I know it. Great clown collection and tonight we
have almost the ultimate clown. Yes. To give away courtesy of Chris that starving
fabulous artist present present. Have you ever stuck a staple in your finger? Well no.
Right in the middle of a show. That's not good Norman. Don't do that. Speaking of
clowns this is the ultimate prize that we've had to give away. I guess if I
move my foot you could probably see it here. Have we named it? Do we have a name
for it? I guess you can name it whatever you choose. I guess so. Well this is
whatever you choose. Now this we had some problems with this on the morning
show this morning on the radio because I didn't know what a balloon clown was.
And I've been driving around all day long with this thing in my car trying to
get it to blow up balloons and it wouldn't do it. Chris had to come down and bring
a balloon right so we could show you what it's for but this is a you can tie
balloons on the hands and on the feet. This is truly a prize that I do not want
to give away. I give away things every day. I don't want to give this away. I
know it. But you can win it tonight and about 20 seconds after we go into the
first commercial break you can start calling 5648386 and you can win it.
Courtesy of starving fabulous artist present presents. Give me your name and we
will draw at the end of the show and whoever's name is drawn wins the clown.
But you have to pick it up Saturday this Saturday this Saturday only between the
hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and we can we know we've got it right because Chris
is sitting here and if we get it wrong sure we get it in she will correct us
ever since Ron gave her that whip for Christmas you know she has been on us you
know it's ridiculous but you could win tonight 5648386 tonight we're going to
be talking about the SFA music preparatory division which is really
really neat if people have listened to the show they heard from time to time
the new version of Smoky Bear not Smoky the Bear but Smoky Bear that my buddy
Phil Par produced and this is part of the group that did that yes and that is
incredible and let's see two weeks from tonight on the show we will have a
special show prerecorded at Lamplight Theater right from the opening night
festivities of Kiss Me K Cole Porter's musical right we will be taping that on
opening night a week from Friday night and it'll be shown two weeks from
tonight and last year we did Camelot and I'm kind of looking forward to that and
we have got so many surprises coming up that you would not believe if we started
to tell you buddy so I don't see any reason to tell about it no we just keep
quiet the surprise but you can win this tonight but it's real important that you
call early so we can get your name in the basket before the cutoff time 5648386

SFA music preparatory division and joining me now along with some friends
is Nancy Robertson and you're right at home here aren't you feel right at home
this is a tape that are filmed live at Fredonia Hill Baptist Church and this
is your home church how long have you lived in Nacodotius this is our fourth
year here my husband and I moved here when he was transferred with Cooper
power systems from where well we're from around Hattiesburg Mississippi is that
yes Lumberton Mississippi I say I can identify with that first of all Sarah
McMullen from Lapland that's right from Hattiesburg and many moons ago I was
there for a short while as a consultant to a radio station in Laurel I know where
Laurel is just right next door radio station WLAU and got to know a lot of
the people down there they have good catfish the truth right it's worth
driving down there just to have the catfish first of all tell me about
the preparatory division in the music department this division is consists of
a lot of different departments we are under the auspices of the music
department at the University but we're we're classified as a freestanding
program on our own because we house many many programs for children at ranging
in age from pre kindergarten all the way through the 12th grade and they can
take lessons and they can study piano privately they can take Kinder music
program which is for the younger children or they can be involved in
private voice lessons guitar lessons any kind of lessons of violin we even have
violin instructor now and we also have the choir programs which is what I'm
associated with we have we started out with the one choir the children's chorus
which was for fifth through seventh grade students and now we have a little
children's choir for live wire students is what we call live wire choir I think
that's a fitting name and it's for third through fifth grade students and there
are some second graders in the group and then we have a new group called show
stoppers for the older children six through eighth grade all right now would
you introduce our special guests here I love those out this is a representative
from our live wire choir this is Griffin Webb to my immediate left and to my far
left is my daughter Katie Robertson who is a representative from our show
stoppers group okay and now if if youngsters want to participate how do
they go about doing they can contact the music department at the university and
if they get that office at the music department they can give them any or
all information that they could possibly want do you want youngsters who are
coming in just because mom and daddy want them to or do you want youngsters who
are really motivated in the area of music we really want children who are
interested in music and who want to do something with music even if it's to
enjoy it later on in life we want children that are want to be involved in
music and enjoy it and perform it for other people
griffin how old are you eight years old eight years old you are a fine-looking
young man can I if I ever need to touch can I borrow your touch your brain could
I do that wouldn't fit you but well the way I'm losing weight didn't matter for
too long true how long have you been saying do you like to sing
do you play a musical instrument guitar piano nothing else so you're just a
singer would you like to be a singer when you grow up yeah to make a living
doing that yeah who is your favorite singer is there somebody that you
really like to hear sing no no you may be the first one you know that's that's
one way to do and and your daughter's name is Katie Katie what about you are
you at all interested in a musical career yes I'd like to sing some even
even if at all in my life I like to sing and help people and tell people we
understood two people about God through my voice so you'd be interested in
gospel music yes gospel music is a big field right now it it sells as many
records as as country and rock and roll and all of these other things it's a
it's a big field do you like to be in front of people when you perform I guess
sometimes it's just the way I feel about that song say I grew up from the time I
was three years old as a performer and always got butterflies in my stomach you
know that's that's the only reason I you know later on in life decided not to
pursue that was because you know I'd get in front of people you know I was
great in a shower you know but you know when you walk out in goodness there's
people you know would you like to to be a professional performer in front of a
lot of people I guess think about that a little bit in now were any of y'all
involved in the smoky bear song oh yes you were I said I played that on the
radio show several times and had a lot of fun doing it he's a he's a miracle
indeed he is a wonderful guy and I always say he's one of God's special
talents to the world totally agree if I had as much talent in my thumb as he has
you know I'd you know I'd be great why is it important that children start in a
program like this early well personally I feel like if you don't get started
early it becomes a little bit harder later on if you're exposed to music as
young child I don't find that you have any problem with pitch pitch or matching
pitch with music or anything like that but children who do have problems with
finding their musical talent have not been exposed to music when they're very
young and I feel like this this program is just great because it deals with all
aspects of music anything you could possibly imagine we can offer it there
at the university is it expensive for young students it depends on what area
and no mostly everything is just very reasonably priced especially the
choir program I know I can spit I don't know exactly what the other prices are
but our choir program is relatively I mean it's terribly inexpensive I think
we figured it out the other day it's like $2.50 a lesson and they have about
15 lessons in the live work that's back I'd call that very reasonable so yeah we'd
love to have a lot of participation from me we have children that come from all
over the place we have children from Lufkin from all sorts of little towns
there on the outlying areas and public school private schools home
schoolers we have them from all all areas of the community it's very
interesting the groups that we can get get together from this you know it's
marvelous and it's something that happens in the community and on campus that I
didn't even know about until recently so I think it's absolutely fascinating
when we come back from the break we're gonna talk about a very important trip
coming up now who's going to this is this even if Austin children's chorus the
children's chorus children's chorus and in a little while we'll meet Matt he's
with the he's in what children's chorus right and this is going to be a big
event that there'll be attending that we'll be telling you more about and
don't forget you still have time to call and you might be the person I am the
most tonight the person that wins the balloon clown from starving fabulous
hardest present present so call us right now at five six four eight three eight
six don't just sit there go call and we'll be back I'm Steven with Adam and
Steve's carpets on South Street we've been in business here in Nacodotus for
over 20 years helping local folks with all their floor covering needs if you
have a new home or would simply like to give your old home a whole new look
come shop with us at Adam and Steve's if you're in the market for carpet no wax
vinyl ceramic tile hardwood floors wallpaper or mini blinds we'll see
to it that you find just the products you need at a price it won't break your
budget so come on in to see us at 1622 South Street and shop with folks who'll
give you the kind of service you used to expect from all merchants I would give
on hiring office workers is to let Fredonia temporades handle it they can
place people on a temporary basis or full-time and if someone doesn't fit in
there's no firing or rehiring just call Fredonia temporades for a replacement
and paying a weekly bill is a lot easier than handling all those payroll
requirements Fredonia temporades does that for you and all other people are
pre-screened and tested so that saves time and money I think calling Fredonia
temporaries just makes good business sense you've been to HB's grill yet it's a
great place to relax anytime you can start your day with our breakfast bar
served hot and delicious or lunch try the complete lunch buffet or just the soup
salad and fruit bar we also offer a full menu to order from including rotisserie
roasted chicken baked white fish and chicken stir-fry or for extra convenience
drive up to our carry out window and take your meal to the office or home so
come to HB's grill on North Street in Acadoches a new place for great food
it's SFA the University not this time SFA stands for starving fabulous artist
starving no fabulous yes artist most definitely presents presents that are
unique and the lowest priced in town so everyone in town come and see all the
unique crass from SFA PP starving fabulous artist presents presents
located on North Street next to Griffith Hall it's like a whole new world
welcome back and Nancy Robertson is with me Nancy someone has called in and
wants me to test your credibility they say if you are really from Hattiesburg
that you will know what jitney jungle is certainly day it's a grocery store that's
right grocery store I never will forget the first time I was in Laurel and I
kept trying to find a grocery store and I kept trying to find a name of a chain
that was familiar you know and I'd seen this jitney jungle and I didn't know
what it was that's a major change right across the street from the mall jitney
jungle that's where it is I'm from Hattiesburg all right so you've passed
the test that's right joining us on the set is Matt Hollyfield we used to call
it Matthew now it's Matt now you know that he's he's growing up Matt has this
uncanny uncanny ability to pass for a 13-year-old teenager when he is
actually what 30 or 40 something like that and that's all are you six-foot
Joe curl sleeps on his front porch I can see why I didn't know you were
interested in music until recently you've got all kinds of ability I won't
pick on you and make you sing tonight but unless you just want to if you
want to stand up and sing you can you want to Matt plays the Great East Texas
IQ test with us from time to time don't forget I'm gonna give you an extra five
minutes so if you haven't called you still got time to call in and win the
balloon clown 5 6 4 8 3 8 6 now the children's course is getting ready to
go to San Antonio that's right February the 11th so you're paying mom and daddy
back for when we went last summer aren't you do me a favor mind your manners a
lot better than your mama did with you she kept getting lost you know all that
sort of thing fortunately you'll be with some people that actually get to the
right place but that's a whole different story
you're driving she's going listen if she turns left out of the parking lot you
know she's going the wrong way that that's a lot did you ever know about
that yeah when we went to to do the short seawall last year Chris you know
wound it up on top of the hemisphere tower or something what's happening in
San Antonio we're singing for the Texas Music Educators Association TMEA now
that doesn't sound like much until you realize you were telling me what 15,000
thousand people will attend the conference including all state band all
state orchestra all state chorus plus many many performing groups from high
school choirs and we're among the chosen three elementary choirs to sing for the
conference and we submitted a tape spring of last year and we received word
in August that we had been selected as one of the three choirs from the state
of Texas to come down to San Antonio and sing so we're really excited about that
what is the criteria for being chosen well I'm assuming that they're looking
for good tone quality and a nice sound together and other than that I really
don't know they didn't give us a judgment sheet or anything to tell us what
they were looking for we just presented the programs that we had done on the
university campuses and we sent that down in the form of a videotape and then
we heard from the president of the elementary division and he asked us to
come and see and we said of course we will we were very excited to be there in
a New York you better believe that do you know yet what y'all are gonna be
singing I know some of the songs what are they
a French piece yes we are I knew I didn't recognize that it's
basically a German piece and we're learning actually we're learning a
new piece right now that was written by a university student his name is Steven
Hayes and he's taking a class in writing musical composition and we're
going to present one of his pieces at the TMEA convention that's great he's
as excited as we are I do believe SFA has a great music department I agree just
fantastic this morning on the morning show I had Justin my bucket Justin's
last name all of a sudden who works a lot at the lamp light just a great great
talent I've never asked you this because like I didn't know until recently you
were that interested in music would you like music as a career kind of maybe as
a singer do you play an instrument why I gotta find something you know a comb we
used to you know take a comb with a piece of paper over which ever and play
that's the only thing I ever learned to play I could fake playing the guitar real
well but guitar is one of those things you know you can really impress people
and I have no earthly idea of what you're doing are you looking forward to
the to the thing in San Antonio yes sir it must be something exciting about
performing to that many people that's like being a major star being in
concert in front of that many people exciting and for these children it's
really going to be an unbelievable experience so well I've never been to
TMEA until I moved here to Texas and everyone told me every music teacher I
ever met said you must go and when I did I said boy I'll never miss it again and
it's just that incredible I've always said that the thing that's incredible
about doing the kind of shows that I do is learning what happens in this
community the average person has no earthly idea what goes on in Nacogdoches
for it to be the size town it is there are probably more cultural and
entertainment activities than anywhere else in town's much bigger and this is
a real honor I think to have there's only three three elementary choirs that
have been invited goodness gracious well Matt I'm plumb proud did you sing on
the smoky bear no sir how did you miss that I didn't sing busy that day he
didn't go with us or y'all are not doing smoky bear in at the we weren't
planning on it but if they wanted a non-core or something maybe we could
pull that out yeah I think that has been submitted to the Forest Service the US
Forest Service or somebody to perhaps become the official national theme song
wonderful for the smoky bear in fact I'll tell you what if somebody were
mad me in the morning wish you were mad or somebody can call and remind me I'll
play the smoky bear song and you will have a chance to hear the children's
chorus sing tomorrow how would that be wonderful so if somebody don't give me a
call I mean it's awfully early and you know smoky bear is not one of the
things that's really on my mind so somebody give me a call we'll take
care of it and we'll be back and we'll have the drawing and give away the
clown right after this this is HB's grill at 2119 North Street home of some of

good shot of it I'm holding it up and I don't see a shot of it anywhere but you
can't say it's because I didn't hold it in front of you Chris Becky Marys did
this right right as in Marys you don't see but anyway and you have these in
stock yes and can I tell them the price because I was amazed how low they were
I mean I think it's a good price I would hope that people would come in and find
out that really it's just real low I won't tell you just won't let me tell
you no it's only $10 it's cheap she wanted to tell you that when let me
well fine just be that way see the good thing about this is that you can use
