Hi Victoria, nice to meet you.
Okay, so if you're ready then we can get on board and look for some dolphins.
Yay!
Music
So we just arrived on the boat and we're hoping to see some dolphins.
There are around 50 in Hong Kong so they're quite elusive so we'll be really lucky if we even manage to see one.
And I think I have to go up for a briefing now.
Stop it!
Okay, okay.

So this is the fishing boat here.
Here's the net, the fishing net.
So they split the fishing net here and then they make the noise in the water.
When the fish heard it, they get scared and they got rushed into the net.
That's how they catch fish.
But this kind of net, there is a potential threat and danger to the dolphins
because they might also bump into the net and then they'll get and take off by the net.
Yeah.

There are different types of fishing in Hong Kong waters.
You've got trawlers, purse same and gill nets, which is what we're looking at here.
Because it's fairly indiscriminate.
They can target specific types of fish but they can't control what gets caught in the net.
So it might catch it as an issue.

So the pigmentation of the dolphins varies due to their age.
When these Chinese white dolphins are first born, the calves are actually a dark grey colour
and slowly as they age from calf to juvenile to sub-adult to adult,
the grey colouration becomes lighter and then more daffodged
and eventually it's grey spots on a paler background
and then as they become adults, they're almost white.

Here is Tai O.
This is one of the oldest fishing village in Hong Kong.
There were fishermen here.
However, they started to abandon using fishing and still living.
Instead, they bring the visitors in Tai O to have the dolphins watching using small speed boat.
However, it is not a good way to see the dolphins.
Because these companies don't follow the code of conduct of the dolphins watching.
They go straight after the dolphins in high speed and leave them with high speed.
So in this case, they might hurt the dolphins by bumping into them
or the engine might cut through the dolphins, which can be quite dangerous for the dolphins.

Well, actually the main friends of Chinese wide open is the reclamation.
Here is the Hong Kong Drogomacal Bridge.
And together with this bridge, there is an artificial island
at a boundary called the Philatine the airport.
And there's around 160 hectares of reclamation
for the grounded boundary process facility.
And these all these kind of construction and reclamation
basically harms the dolphin population and reduces their population.
Especially in Northeast Lentown.
The rather island in Northeast Lentown.
It was a hot spot for dolphins.
However, after the construction started, we barely see a dolphin there.
Last year, we only have one sighting of dolphins
with one dolphin in the Northeast Lentown island.
