Hi, welcome to this drones tutorial. I've assumed that you have a copy of
bin running on your machine and you've started it and it looks like this, okay?
We're going to create drones, but before we do that, we would like to make the
scrolling a little bit faster, especially in Y. X is okay. Horizontal
scrolling through A and D keys, okay? But the vertical scrolling through W and S
is a bit slow. That's the default setting. So let's change that with this command
called set var. So set var, scroll, Y. Let's change that to something like 10. So if you
do that and then you come out of the command mode pressing tab again. So that
basically makes the Y scrolling a bit faster, okay? So, okay. So the Y
scrolling is a bit faster, then we probably want to move the oscilloscopes
somewhere really down. Just click on top of this, oops, on top of this, just
underneath the thingy. It's not perfect, but anyway, so okay. So you questioned it
like that. Now, we're just going to create some drones. To create the drones, it's a
good idea to turn the delay off. So we press the apostrophe key and the delay is gone.
So turn off the gaiters, press B to turn off the gaiters. Okay, so now we are ready to
create the drones. So we just move it and it starts playing. To turn on the drone, we just
press the Q key. Before we do that, you probably want to remove the swirl. So for
that, you basically go into the strength editor, which is number one. Press
number one and this is the strength editor. And just try to zoom in by pressing
E key, E for egg, and put your mouse inside the diamond that you see here.
And simply press Shift F and it would have picked it and you can drag it down. So
drag it down to zero. Okay, so it's now on zero. If you can't see it, then press S
and it will scroll down and it will, you just drop it on zero. That is zero comma
zero. Okay, especially the Y value should be zero. Okay, so now that means that the
strength of this oscillator has been quietened down, so you're not going to hear
anything. See, if you go in, you don't hear anything because the oscillator has been
quietened down. Okay, fine. So now we can just go inside and to create a drone.
So let's say you go in here, you could go anywhere here, here, here, here, here, anywhere. You can even go here and create a drone. But let's say we just create a drone slightly here. So we create a drone by pressing the letter Q, Q for
Quaker. Okay, and it's created it there. And as you can see, the drone is starting sounding.
Now you can edit the drone by putting your mouse inside the handle and pressing E and you just press it once and leave it. And then you just have to move the mouse. You don't have to click it anymore. You just move your mouse freely.
So as you move, you note that the pitch of the drone changes, so the pitch of the drone becomes lower. As you go left, as you go right, it increases in pitch.
So as you see, you can, so back in the middle of it, drop it, press E again to drop it.
So of course, you can put your drone on any tone between two notes, so there's no restriction at all. Or you can snap the drones. Actually, you can also snap the drones, set var, snap to drones to one. And that will basically snap the drones to the note.
So if you try to create a drone here, it will snap to this, the nearest note. See?
I mean, I've created drones like this. So you can also snap to create drones on the notes here.
So you can create as many drones as you like. So let's pull down the volume a little bit. So let the drone distort.
So that's the drone master volume. So I'm pulling it down by pressing the comma key to pull it down and dot to pull it down.
Okay, so pressing the comma key to pull it down. Or you can just enter the command and just set var dv to some value that you like.
Or you can even make it louder. 0.1, 0.5 is going to be really loud, so it's going to be really loud, so it's going to be really loud.
It starts to distort. But there is a compressor on board. You won't be dealing with it.
Anyway, so to see if the compressor is on, you press P. So the compressor is the same, which means the compressor is on by default.
Turn it on, pressing P again. Okay. It won't work in the command. If you press P inside the command, when you see the red cursor here, it's in command.
When you press P, it just types the character. So you want to come out of the command, pressing tab, and then you press P to actually use the shutter.
Okay, so the compressor is enabled, so we know that we're not going to bring it down.
But the compressor also has a limit, so probably has a limit of 5 times the max volume. Anyway, so we are kind of well within the range at this point.
Okay, so the snap drone is on, so if we create... So it just snaps, snaps, snaps, snaps. Okay, so we probably don't want that.
So let's say you want to delete something. So what do you do? So you just click drag a box around and press C.
Okay, so that deletes the drone. So I'm going to delete these two drones. Let's see. Click and drag a box and release the click.
Okay, so let's try to delete some more drones. We probably don't need so many drones for these.
Okay, so I'm deleting drones on nodes which are kind of not very harmonious with the drone.
Okay, so 4th and 5th and the drone, I'm leaving it as it is, but this is like deleting these drones.
Okay, now you see that the drones are only on the 1st, the 4th and the 5th. We could move the drones around, of course.
You can once select them like that and then press E and you can move them around.
Because the snapping is on, so okay, so I'm going to set the box, snap drones to 0 and then the snapping. Okay, and now I click and select and I can move them around.
So that's a relative move. So now as you see, I can drag it through the drone like that.
Okay, so let's try to maybe increase the scroll speed.
So SV set bar, I can do set bar scroll or I can simply do SV set bar, scroll X, scroll B, 25. Okay, that's much faster.
Okay, you can have as many drones as you like. Okay, so let's create some more drones here. So you press Q again to create more drones.
You can keep on pressing Q, the key to pick kicks in, so it kind of beats a bunch of drones. Like that, okay.
Okay, so it doesn't seem to go on top, so it creates it here. So it'll work, maybe it's limited here.
So basically, I will go back like the limit and press it. Maybe I'll change the course.
Anyway, so you can just create the drones. What I meant to say was you can't create it from here.
Technically, I won't want that limitation. I don't want to create it at any point. I don't like to make questions for you.
Anyway, so it doesn't do it at this point. So we need to change the course. Anyway, it's okay.
So that's basically it. This is how the drone editing as such works. But it's not the end of the story, because let's delete this.
You can bunch delete them. So we probably have this like this. Okay, so now let's pull it down a little bit.
Okay, now if we want to change the timbre of the drone, this is fine, but if you want to change the timbre of the drone, you press key 8.
So if you press 8, you go into the drone waveform editor, which is right now this nice sine wave. That's a busy waveform, of course.
So you could just, you know, change this waveform and change the timbre. It's all real time. So how do you change? How do you move the waveform?
So, no, the points. Okay, so press F inside the diamond. You want to be careful not to press F on this one.
Anyway, so it doesn't matter. It's one of these little niggling bones, which you see the timbre changes.
So I press M at one point. So if you have these messages kind of obstructing your view, just press backspace and this message clears up.
You can continue. Do anything, basically. And just, that's how you change the timbre of the sound.
Now you can also re-fight these, re-fight the number of drones that you have between two drones to edit them more. So, hold the console.
So there are now 100,857 drones between these two nodes, right? Nodes one and two.
Okay, and you see the drones are so closely spaced, actually. Now you've shifted the tonic.
And that's the question of fun stuff. I like that.
Shift M, control N and M are the keys that you want to change the number of microphones you have between drones.
Just press the shift, left shift key, and if you just move the mouse to the right, it increases the number of drones.
If you move towards the left, it decreases the number of drones. Okay? So that's one way to change the controls as well.
So what else? That's about it, basically. You can't change the number of just a small bunch of drones and have another...
Sorry, you can't assign one waveform to a small bunch of drones and assign a different waveform to another bunch of drones.
You can't do that. You can't do modulations like you can't do frequency modulation or amplitude modulation.
I'd like to bring in all these features to gators, you can't do that. But what you can do is octave shift.
So set PPM, octave shift, let's say we keep it at 30, okay? And this is the octave shift editor number seven.
So the octave shift goes over PPM. So at zero, at beat zero, it's the same tone.
And then at beat one, it kind of goes up to two, right? So that means it multiplies by the octave.
So you can shift the octaves of the drone as a group and that's for the night effect, like so.
Okay, let's make the BPM slower, like a five, okay?
Changing. And the way in which it changes is determined by this curve.
So you could have different curves, but that's in the level nine and zero keys.
You can go through the library of the octave shift pattern.
So this one, I think goes from a normal tone to a fifth above and then comes back to sort of near close to third.
Sorry, it comes to fourth and then goes back to fifth. So it can be neither.
So let's add some more tones here.
Now the octave shift is a bit more clear.
Okay?
Then I'm going down.
You see how it goes to fifth, fourth and then to ninth.
And then shift to fourth and then it's going to be very clear.
Now you could just close by making little small melodies.
So lift the resonator back up, make the strength back up.
Just keep it at that round point, please.
So now you can do a melody here.
So now you can do a melody here.
So that's basically it.
It's still a work in progress.
We want to do modulations with the portals.
Gating with the portals.
We like to kind of make it very general.
If you want you can assign this in different ways on each track.
Right now all of the portals share the same way.
So you want to bring these features and I think that's what is the purpose of this work.
Make it very general purpose but at the same time extremely important for life use.
Thanks very much.
