3, 3, 2, 1, win!
Hello and welcome to this week's edition of Coach's Corner.
I'm Dan Swank joined as always Coach Roseanne Scott, coach of our last time doing Coach's
Corner together.
Crazy how time flies.
I know.
I wanted to congratulate you first off on your season.
It ended last night, a tough playoff loss at Waynesburg.
You did have some playoff success.
You beat Grove City on the road in that first game.
Grove City was one of the teams you hadn't beaten in the regular season, but it was always
close.
But going into that playoff game, you had to have a lot of confidence.
Yeah, we did.
We do, maybe the first two games we played them.
We had them defensively where we wanted to.
We just, on the other end, weren't scoring, weren't shooting well.
But yeah, they knew that we could, we knew that we could possibly have an opportunity
of beating them.
And the girls won.
They were.
They knew they beat us twice and they were ready to go.
So you actually beat them in the first half outright.
You outscored them in both the first quarter and the second quarter.
What did you tell them at halftime?
We've seen your team maybe slip up a little bit in the second half to teams like St. Vincent
where you had a chance, but you couldn't capitalize in the second half.
What did you tell them at halftime to make sure that they stayed on track?
I think what helped us going into halftime is Rachel made a big three right before that
and we came down and got a stop.
Typically right before half, we make a big shot.
They come down and make, throw up something and it goes in.
So I think, you know, we went in with the momentum.
And you know, I just, we just said, you know, we wanted to adjust something with the press
breaker.
We wanted to make some adjustments with that.
And that was basically it.
We said, just keep defensively, keep locking down what you're doing and offensively, keep
moving the ball.
I think we ended up with, I mean, I don't know how many assists that game, but we moved
the ball really well.
So I saw a video on Twitter actually of your team coming together at the end of that game
as the final buzzer sounded and there was cheers and they were running and screaming.
How nice of a moment was that to get the upset on the visiting teams floor?
It was really nice.
I mean, we've had a lot of ups and downs this year and to have a young team be able to experience
that playoff victory was good.
And I mean, for Rachel to get that win, too, as a senior was nice and, you know, to have
is a complete team effort.
It was, I mean, the bench from all the way down, I mean, the energy from the Gicco was
there.
Everybody came in and did their role and we did it together and that's one thing that
we were stressing.
Absolutely.
So last night, tough loss on the road against Weinsberg, but off to a slow start.
What was the cause of that?
It was a tough road environment, I understand.
What was the cause of the slow start?
You know, we came out, we had a good stop.
And then we just, we gave up three offensive rebounds in a row.
And that wasn't the tone that we wanted to set.
And you know, we kind of, on the offensive end, forced some things, tried to press some
of it offensively.
We weren't patient.
We wanted to be patient.
We came down and were taking quick shots.
So we didn't want to play an up and down game with them because, you know, we turned around,
played Monday and, you know, we wanted to work, work the ball around more and be able
to drive, be aggressive and take it to the basket.
And actually Weinsberg did exactly what we wanted to do against us.
So, but, you know, they wanted it really, I think they wanted it too much and we kind
of kind of got out of sync.
Absolutely.
So a lot of, you've received a lot of support on Twitter, you know, fellow coaches tweeting
you, congratulating you, despite the loss, I think everybody recognizes the hard work
and the growth that this team made.
Talk a little bit about that, what you witnessed from the start of the season until the end.
I think as a coach and any coach, whatever sport they coach, they want the team to get
better throughout the year.
And, you know, having such an inexperienced team and going through the, going through
that at the beginning, yes, we're there games that we should have won even with being inexperienced.
Absolutely.
And for them to stay above it and not get down and come out in the second half of the conference
and play better and get better, I think from, from the beginning of the year to the end
of the year, we really got better as a team, we got better as individuals and just knowing
the game and knowing each other.
And as a coach, that's what you want, want, want to have.
Yeah.
We said it time and time again.
I mean, this is a young roster.
You won 11 games.
When does preparation start for next season?
Obviously, you had some success, but you want to build on that with the youth that you have.
So when does the preparation start?
Does it start today?
Or what's that process like?
Yeah.
We have a couple of big recruits on campus today, so, you know, that doesn't stop.
So that, finishing up that and, you know, after spring break, we'll start getting into,
into the weight room again.
We'll do our exit interviews here soon and talk about, but we told them after the game,
I said, you know, you guys got a taste of what, what winning is and what we could do
and, you know, the expectations are going to be higher next year and, you know, having
Chrissy back in will, will help that leadership role.
And Rachel did a great job of, of, you know, showing them what hard work and how to work
hard and be a gym rat and, and the team and hopefully that, that can, that will continue
in the spring.
Absolutely.
That's segues into our next question.
You'll have Chrissy from the back, your team adjusted and played well without Chrissy.
Obviously, you played the latter half of the season without her.
She's one of your top players overall.
So it's got to be exciting knowing you have her back with that experience and then this
group of talented youngsters to, to build on.
It has to be exciting going into your 16th year as a coach.
Oh wow.
Um, the one, the one thing that's good about, um, getting Chrissy back with our, with that
senior class is, you know, her, her Kylie, um, we have Paige, but, you know, they, they
are, they're hard workers and, um, that's one thing that you want to have as seniors
and that's going to be exciting to, to, to have as a coach, to know that they are going
to make sure, you know, things are taken care of in that aspect and, um, you know, it, it
is exciting.
Right.
Um, so, but we'll, uh, put the work in and hopefully, um, see some progress next year.
Absolutely.
If you could pinpoint one moment from the season, as far as like a best memory, what would that
be?
It's hard to put you on the spot or something like that, but if you could remember one or
maybe two moments that really stand out, what would those be?
Um, you know what?
I think it probably would have to be, um, the Grove City game and that was, I think,
a big moment.
Maybe that's because it's so fresh in my mind, um, maybe because it was such a team, um, effort
and, you know, to see their faces, um, afterwards, um, that was, it was kind of like we, we could
do this.
Absolutely.
I know that, that was one of them.
Um, that's, that's what I predicted, I mean, it's the most recent one.
So yeah.
Well coach, congratulations on a great season.
All right.
It's been a pleasure interviewing you for the last three years.
Absolutely.
Uh, stay tuned.
Coming up next on Coaches Corner, we have Mackenzie Basala, who will giving us a pack
update.
Oh my God.
Hello and welcome to the Pack Basketball Report for February 23rd, 2017.
I'm Mackenzie Basala.
In the Men's Pack Tournament, the St. Vincent Bearcats have secured a top scene in the Pack
Championship with their win over Westminster on Saturday.
They now have a record of 15 and three.
The Thomas More Saints went 2-0 last week with wins over St. Vincent and W&J, clinching
a share of the pack of regular season.
A record of 15 and three puts them in the second seed for the Pack Championship.
Teal secures the number three spot on the championship with wins last week over Grove
City, 65 to 60 and Chatham, 74 to 57.
Top player of the week goes out to Damien King, a sophomore guard at Thomas More.
King helped lead the Saints to a pair of wins last week, which clinched a share of the program's
third pack regular season title.
He averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists and two steals during the game stretch,
which included a 25.9 assist, seven rebound effort in last Wednesday's 87-78 home win
over St. Vincent.
Rookie of the week is Sean Stinelli, a freshman guard at W&J.
Stinelli averaged 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.5 blocks per game last week.
He scored 14 points and pulled down 6 rebounds in Wednesday's 57-56 win at Wainsburg before
totaling 26 points shooting, including 6 of 12 from the three-point range.
In Saturday's 65-69 loss to Thomas More, Saturday marked his fourth 20-point game of the season
and fourth game with six triples.
On the women's side of the pack, Thomas More has the top seed in the Pack Championship
game with an undefeated record of 18-0.
Marked number two by the WBCA and number four by D3hoops.com last week, the Saints posted
wins over St. Vincent and W&J to complete its fifth undefeated regular season in program
history.
The second seed is W&J, followed by St. Vincent, both with 13 and five pack records.
Pack player of the week is Lexi Arcray, a junior guard at Grove City College.
She averaged 29 points, six rebounds and three steals and two blocks per game last week and
helping Grove City to two conference wins.
Saturday at Bethany, she scored a career-high 35 points, shooting in an 82-79 overtime win.
Her 35 points are the most ever by a Grove City player in a pack game.
Wednesday night, she became Grove City's 13th all-time 1,000-point scorer when she
scored 23 points in a 70-56 win over Teal.
Rookie of the week is Katie Balcom, a freshman forward also from Grove City College.
Balcom averaged 17 points, seven rebounds and 2.5 steals per game last week while helping
Grove City to two league wins.
She had a career-high 24 points and a career-high 9 rebounds Wednesday night against Teal.
Saturday at Bethany, she posted 10 points and seven rebounds in the Wolverines 82-79
overtime win.
That is all for this segment of the Pack Basketball Report.
I'm Mackenzie Basala, and I'll see you on the court.
And welcome back to this edition of Coaches Corner.
I'm Kallen Gerse, and join me this time, as always, headman's basketball coach, Kevin
Seraghi.
Coach, how are we doing?
Good.
Kallen, how are you?
Good.
Last one of the year, we got to make it good, right?
You know that.
All right.
So, in first round action of the PAC playoffs, your team fell to the Bethany Bison last
Tuesday, let's talk about the first half for a minute.
It was back and forth action, 41-38 at the break in favor of Bethany.
How did you feel at the end of the first half?
I thought it felt pretty good because they made some shots in the first half, and they
got out to, I think, they were up 12 to 14 points early in the first half there, and
we battled back, and I think Polaris gave me some threes at the end of the half there
to get us back in it.
But this point in the little bit that we didn't get, you know, when Jason hit the threes,
they come back and hit back-to-back threes as well.
So they kind of exited out, but, you know, I was happy.
I thought we, you know, we're talking as a staff, you know, maybe we took their best
shot early, and, you know, they weren't playing, you know, throughout the year, they weren't
playing very well as a second half team, but, you know, so we're pretty happy going into
that.
So, kind of go off that.
You mentioned the slow start in the first half.
Was there, you know, was it jitters, or what exactly was it?
I don't know, you know, and that's the thing, it's a playoff game, and, you know, it's
a survive and advance kind of game, and, you know, and obviously when trying to get further
than we did last year, again, it's semi-final, so I don't know what it was, you know, and,
and, but, you know, then you, you don't get a good start or a strong start, and you got
to keep battling, and I think, you know, that's what we've done all year long, so I was pretty
happy with that.
And you mentioned it, two big reasons, you guys played so well in the first half.
Jason Polarski had 11 points, and he had 3-3, something that maybe Jason hadn't really done
that much all season.
What made, what made that game different, you know, he is one of the seniors, is that
what it was?
Well, I hope so, you know, I thought so, but, you know, down at, down at Bethany as well
earlier in the year, you know, we beat them down there, that, you know, Jason came out
to begin his second half, and he hit 3-3-3, so, you know, I don't know if it was a plane
against Bethany or what, but, you know, we're happy he did hit those.
And Jerry Vrable was the other reason, he had 11 points in the first half as well, along
with Jason Polarski, you know, what were you, what were you thinking as a head coach, having
two guys that were really white-hot in the first half?
Are you drawing up plates for them?
What's going through your head?
No, you know, mostly when they, Bethany played that zone, especially, you know, we were trying
to run that little bit of zone offense for Vrable, you know, he shoots that elbow jump
shot well, and he shoots a short corner jump shot well, as he's been doing all year long,
so we've tried to do that.
And by what Jason, you know, he kind of didn't get hot until late in the first half, so,
you know, like I said, give him a lot of credit for that coming off the bench and knocking
some shots in, and keeping us in the game.
And Deontay Scott finished with his ninth double-double of the year, 13 points, 10 rebounds.
I think I've mentioned this before on this show, have you ever seen a guy that's been
on a run like Deontay has this year?
Not at 6-2.
Yeah.
You know, and that's the thing.
You know, everyone's like, well, he's your center.
I'm like, yeah.
And I said, wait till you see him play.
And you know, he's done a heck of a job for us all year long, and you know, I'm so proud
of what he's done and the team done, but, you know, Deontay is, he does things that I'm
like, how did he get that up, or how did he get that rebound?
So he's got a lot of heart, you know, and again, you know, I thought, you know, with
him doing a great job on the off-season, you know, with his weight and losing a lot of
weight, and he's done a great job, man, so I'm, you know, obviously, I'm proud of what
he's done.
So in the second half, you kind of touched on, Bethany was hot, was an understatement,
56% from the field, 54% from three, you know, when you're in a situation like that as a
head coach, what do you do?
Well, you know, the funny part about it is we talked in the first half is that we, you
know, at first play of the game, I thought we played great defense, and, you know, they
get number one to shoot a three from 25 feet, and he banks it in, and they were like, oh,
this is going to be one of those games, and they hit some shots first half, but the second
half, again, you know, we want to make them jump shooters, because they know they get
to the rim pretty well, and, you know, Levin comes back, Truex, who's a freshman, and,
you know, they made some shots, you know what I mean, and so you got to shake their hand
and, you know, and it is what it is, you know, and try to, you know, try to keep battling,
and again, they made their shots, and, you know, they did the things that we're trying
to, you know, make them do, and so you got to shake their hand and go from there.
And you mentioned Chase Truex, 26 points off the bench, I believe he made five threes
in that ball game, you know, how do you prepare for a guy like that off the bench?
You don't.
Yeah.
So, but he's been, he's had a good year, you know, as a freshman, especially as a freshman
for them, so, you know, when we, in during practice, believe it or not, we did go over
their stuff.
A lot of people don't think that you go over their stuff, so, yeah, we, and we also shoot
foul shots in practice, some people may not think that, but, but yeah, so we knew he's
going to shoot it, you know, and we try to get out and defend it, and again, you know,
give them credit for, you know, once you got hot, and, you know, you got to find a guy
like that, and try to make him put on the floor a little bit more and go from there.
And you mentioned before we went on there, the length of Bethany that really gave you
guys fits, and their defense was just stifling, you know, how do you prepare for, you know,
a team that has such big length that maybe you guys don't have?
Right, you know, I mean, and that's why we caught a ram, you know, this, you know, we
call it flash offense against the zone, and I thought we did a pretty good job on Saturday
against St. Vincent with that.
And then, you know, we kept running the same way, you know, on Tuesday night, and I thought
we got some great looks still, you know, and again, you know, it didn't go in, and, so
it's just one of those games, and you got to, you got to, you know, it stinks, but,
you know, it is what it is.
All right, so I know you mentioned the seniors the last time we were on the show, but can
you talk just real quick about what, you know, those guys had meant to this program?
Yeah, you know, all three of those guys, you know, Cody Gander, you know, Jason Polarski
and Campo's guy have been staples for our, you know, our program, you know, they've been
here for three years, and even when we had the thin wins, you know, the last couple
of years, and, you know, now turning it around a little bit, you know, those guys are still
building blocks, and another guy's not coming back next year is Brandon Dominic, who's a
junior, you know, not academic, it's what basketball wise and senior academic wise is
going to be graduating, and, you know, I give B a lot of credit, man, he's battled, and,
you know, we didn't think he was going to play this year, and, you know, he's been our
leader, and, you know, as a former point guard, and you see, you know, he's a little point
guard, he's got a little toughness in him, and we're going to miss all four of those
guys, you know, and some people may not think that we won't, you know what I mean, but,
you know, I care a lot about those guys, and they're going to go on and be successful
in life, you know what I mean, and using basketball as an avenue to, you know, get jobs or whatever
that as well, and, again, I thank them for the bottom of my hearts, and, you know, I'm
glad their parents entrusted us to take care of them for four years.
All right, so one last question here, the season may not be over, we know you might
have a chance at the ECAC tournament bid, what's the status of that at this stage in
the game?
Yeah, well, they're going to either dance here, I think, it's Monday or Sunday they
pick, and, you know, some of the teams that are, who declared for the ECAC tournament
maybe get into the NCAA tournament, so I know talking with Coach Daffler, and he thinks
we might have a good chance of, you know, getting into that, and that's going to be
great, because, you know, anytime you get to play in the March, you know, that's something
about your team, and so we're excited about that, and hopefully we can get in and do well
in that, you know what I mean, and then prepare for next year, you know, going into the off
season and, you know, be on the recruiting trail and bring some guys in, and we've got
a lot of guys coming back, so we're, the program's going in the right direction, and we're
happy about that, and I think people see where the direction we're going in.
All right, well, that will pretty much do it here on this segment of Coaches Corner
Coach, congratulations on a great year, thank you, thank you for the Coaches Corner interviews.

It's just one embarrassing picture, an angry rant, or a little bit of gossip.
But then others see it, they share what you started.
It's all out there, forever, and it's too late to take it back.
Kelly.
Huh?
What were you saying about Amanda and Steve?
Oh, nothing.
Just some dumb rumor I saw online, it was probably fake.
So what about Mr. Frisco's test yesterday?
Oh my god.
Stop cyber-bullying before it starts.
Think before you post.
All right, give me a spot, you know my motto, safety first.
They could be dangerous, I think we should call animal control.
Animal control?
To be safe.
Don't worry.
I got this.
It's a new motto.

Thank you for joining me.
Thank you.
So before we get into this coming season, let's talk a little bit about last season.
The team went 24-16, 16-2 in the PAC, you had a 19 game win streak, and you even hosted
playoffs.
However, you did go two, and now in them, talk a little bit about how the team has improved
since then, and how you're looking to bounce back from that tough loss to end the season
last year.
Right.
Well, it's hard to say how much they've improved since that was our last game.
We're getting ready to start again, so we haven't seen them in game action yet, but
I think the loss itself, or just that day, let's call it one bad day, hopefully put some
fire in them to know what we have to do from start to end.
The team definitely gradually got better through the season.
You mentioned the 19 game winning streak.
If I have to blame anything, it's not an excuse, but I think we forgot how to lose, and once
we lost one in the playoffs, it just turned a corner in a negative way.
We need to learn how to, probably the most important thing this year is to just do one
game at a time, and losses are going to happen.
Maybe the 19 game winning streak was probably the worst thing that could have happened to
us.
A couple losses in there that we could overcome might have helped us in the playoffs.
Something else the team also struggled a lot with last year was shoulder injuries.
How do you see the team coming back after dealing with those last season?
I think every team goes through injuries.
We certainly had our share, but they overcame them.
The ones that we had, I have to give credit to, we had some depth last year.
When the injuries occurred, people stepped right up and right in.
It didn't really hinder us much as a team, and the people that were injured did a great
job of getting themselves back.
Right now, knock on wood, we seem good to go, but you never know.
The injuries are always going to be an issue throughout the season.
It's just how people step up and take over for them.
Talking about depth coming into this season, you did lose senior pitcher Amber Forrest.
How do you look to fill that second pitcher spot?
We have a lot of options, which is a great thing.
We have junior Abby Reinhardt and junior Emily Westfall, who both, I think, are ready to
step in and take that spot.
We have a couple of freshmen also that we're going to look to.
We have options, and that's a plus.
They're going to be working with each other to see who steps up and does that, but that
being said, we're hoping that's not a big downfall having lost Amber last year.
Yeah, definitely.
You talked about some freshmen you're actually pretty excited about.
Talk about the recruiting process this off season, and who you're excited to watch.
As recruits are the freshmen that are in here this year, we have a good group.
The recruiting process goes year round, as you know, so you get to see them in high school
and then through their summer ball, and now they're in your program.
We're looking for all of our freshmen to step up.
Any coach hopes that their team, core team is juniors and seniors by all means, but that's
not always the case.
You need those freshmen to step up, push the upperclassmen.
We have four of them in here now, and like I said, two of them are pitchers.
We have some speed in the other ones, and it gives us depth, so we're looking for them
to be ready to go should those injuries occur.
We don't ever want to miss a beat, whether it's a senior or a freshman, so we're hoping
they prepare themselves, and they are, and they've added some energy to the team for
short.
Very cool.
Two players that I'm sure you're definitely very excited that are returning this year are
sophomore shortstop Kaylee Liverman, who actually had a shoulder surgery over the off-season,
and your starting pitcher, Jasmine Rohrer.
You know, why are these girls so important to this team, and how's Kaylee doing since
her surgery?
Well, we'll talk about Kaylee first.
Yes, she actually had a torn labrum in her left arm, which is odd because she's a right-handed
thrower, and that's usually what causes it.
I will say what we believe it is, she swings like crazy, and that's why I think you mentioned
her batting average and what she did for us and the team.
She swings so hard that I think we believe that's what caused the tear in the left arm,
which is a good thing as far as being right or left.
But she got the surgery over the summer, rehab doll fall.
She looks 100% right now, so I don't think she's going to miss a beat.
And as far as jazz, you know, jazz transferred in last year from a division to school and
stepped right in and, you know, led us as far as the pitching situation, and will obviously
be a good role model for that pitcher you talked about needing to come in.
And, you know, what people don't always know is that softball plays double headers, so
a second pitcher is a must or to have someone ready to go for that second game.
So jazz will be a good example to them, what it takes work-wise and what it takes as far
as what the pitch to that team, because they're going to face the same team she just faced.
So she's a giant benefit having that, having her come back also.
So you are entering your 21st season as head coach here at Westminster.
Thanks for dating me.
Has the team done anything different this off-season or is doing anything this pre-season differently
from previous years?
Well, one, I have a new assistant coach.
And every time a new assistant coach comes in, they bring new ideas, and you love that.
That's why you do it.
And our assistant coach has always worked with the weightlifting program in that sense,
but she's worked real well with Cassie Flannert, that's part of our athletic staff, as far
as putting in a different type of lifting program.
And the players seem to enjoy it, and they're working hard, and I'm seeing results with
it.
I think they are, too.
And it's a little more fun and a little more energetic.
And so I think they've seen that difference.
As far as the off-season, with outside of that, I've seen a lot more of them in the gym on
their own, in the cages working out.
That might go back to that loss in the playoffs, that bad day, because, like I said, it's a
bad taste in your mouth.
So they're doing a good job, but let's not let that happen again.
It all comes down to leadership, too, showing the young ones this is what it takes in the
off-season.
So every year the team goes on a Florida trip.
Talk about a little bit about what that trip does for the team and why it's so important.
It's extremely important.
And not only, you know, the main reason is to get out of this weather.
Of course, it's been 70 this week, so we could have played here, but that's the main reason
everyone thinks you're going just by far not that.
We get to play 10 games down there.
The good thing about where we go is they usually try to match you against regional teams from
up here.
And our region is Ohio, Indiana, Illinois.
We wouldn't have an opportunity to go play them here, so we get to play them down there.
And we're playing some top-notch teams.
So the games do count.
They count in your national rankings, all your stats and everything.
So they're not like exhibition games, so we are still trying to win.
But one, you're out, you get to finally be outside playing.
It does give me an opportunity to try people without that importance of being a pack game.
But people usually step up or step down down there.
And it's a real place for them to showcase themselves.
It helps with team bonding.
I mean, obviously, you put 20 females in one space at one time.
They get to know each other fairly well.
So I think it's a good team bonding thing also.
So it helps in so many ways.
And then when you get back, the season goes so quickly that that's the best way to get
it started.
Well, I'm sure you're very, very excited for this upcoming season.
I'm sure a lot of fans at Westminster College are as well.
That's going to be all the time we have today.
Once again, this was Jan Reddinger, the head softball coach at Westminster College.
It's been a pleasure.
It's been a pleasure too.
Thank you.
That's going to be all for this Coach's Corner this season.
Thanks for joining us once again.
