Cork University Hospital is unique. CUH is the largest hospital in the state and one
of the biggest and busiest hospitals in Europe, with over 42 different medical, surgical and
trauma-related specialisms all on one campus. The hospital employs over 4,000 staff and sees
almost 500,000 patients annually. Behind the familiar walls of CUH lies the most extraordinary
community of care reaching out to a region of 1.5 million people. So many lives have been
touched by CUH. Anthony MacMahon was diagnosed with cancer of the bladder in 2013 and was
referred to Dr. Frank O'Brien at the CUH Urology Unit. Anthony's successful treatment and recovery
was due to Dr. Frank O'Brien and staff at CUH. Dr. O'Brien considers me one of his
meritorious patients and I'm so delighted with that. He has treated me and all my family with
distinction and with love and with helpfulness all the way through. I have never met anybody
so concerned about me and my family. Bladder cancer is one of the main neurology cancers
affecting people in Ireland. Our patients, young and old, can come from any of the towns and
villages in the surrounding counties of Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Waterford and South East
Limerick, even as far away as South Lenster. Patients deserve the best and my job as a
urologist in CUH is to make every patient's journey a little easier by delivering the best
standard of care. We want to urgently set up and refurbish a new urology unit in CUH
and extend our treatments to many more patients. With your help we can adapt an existing facility
to create a new changing area, toilet facilities and patient assessment area all in one unit.
With a new standalone urology unit we can also undertake more endoscopies and assessments
in that single dedicated unit. This will allow us to take direct referrals from A&E and local
GPs helping to further reduce waiting times. A new urology unit will positively impact
on the 2,000 adults we see per year with cancer and bladder conditions allowing us to improve
our service and to see more patients. People can help by making donations bigger
small to create a new urology unit at Cork University Hospital and we would be very proud
and as would all the people of Cork to have that. The quality of life is improved immensely.
I'm just after 10 days of a holiday and I've nothing but the highest regard for CUH and
the proof for the pudding is that I'm here today. I'm very happy.
