Good evening, dear hearts, and welcome to the show. I'm Norman Johnson. I would like
for you to meet my co-host, both here on the show and at home and practically everywhere
I go. This is Lil. Good afternoon. This evening. Boy, it's confusing.
It's been dark all day. It's been raining and everything like that. And Craig, Craig
was our fill-in director last week while Everett was gone. I just wanted you to know that
if you're watching that Everett's back and if I want to sit like this or whatever I want
to do tonight, I can do it because, okay, we just got that straight into Craig. We got
a good show tonight. We're going to be talking about, I always hate this week because it's
so hard to say. I always say, I love to hear you say it. But it's a red ribbon a week.
Not only that, but on the great Nacogdoches giveaway, Chris, that starving, fabulous
artist present presents, is giving away another tree swing. A tree swing. We gave away one
of these and it was so popular. The last one was decorated for my grandson, Smart. It was
already painted and decorated and everything like that. But this is what it looks like
if I can get it in there. And these are so neat. Your child will love it. Absolutely
love it. And to win this, we're going to have a drawing before we go off the air. And when
we go into the first commercial break, you can begin calling. I wouldn't call right now
because nobody will answer. If they do, it'll be the wrong person. But when we go into the
commercial break, call 564-8386. And all you have to do is just call up and we put your
name in the drawing and we have a drawing before we go off the air. And like I say,
this is the most popular gift. I like this. I want to do the show sometime outside. Hanging
on the tree swing. Swinging, you know, on the tree swing. I think that would be fun to
do. And you could do it. Are you having a good week? I'm having a great week. Oh, let
me tell you what. You're looking forward to the weekend. I am too. I am going to the
world famous East Texas Jammery in my hometown of Gilmer. I'm looking forward to that. For
those of you who don't know, that's a sweet potato festival. It's a little strange, but
it's, we've been doing it for years. Anything happening this weekend that we need to know
about? Yes, this weekend here in Akadoches under the big top at the Exposition Center
is the October Fast Arts and Crafts Show. My friend David Stallings, Landmark Productions,
does these all over the country and they are big events and he is doing one in Akadoches
this weekend. Right. And you can, you can find all kinds of unique handmade gifts, clothing,
woodwork, ceramics, quilts and a lot of different things and meet the people that did these
things. It is Saturday from, let's see, 9 until 5 p.m. and Sunday 11 to 4. The admission
is three dollars for adults, children under 12 getting free and that admission is good
for both days. Yeah, now you pay one admission price and like you go on Saturday and you
pay to get in, you get your ticket, you want to go back Sunday, you can use that same ticket
to get in. Right, and included in that admission ticket you get a more, yes, you get a one
dollar off any purchase of ten dollars or more. You're kidding. And not only that, every
30 minutes they will have a drawing for a free door price. Every 30 minutes. And again,
Landmark does these shows all over the United States and we are glad that one is being done
in Akadoches. So it will not be in the Expo Center or on top of the Expo Center. It's
actually going to be in front of the Expo Center under this huge tent. Huge. Omar the
Tentmaker is busy working in his little village right now getting the tent ready. Don't forget,
if you want to win the Treeswing from Fabulous, okay. Starving, Fabulous. Okay, start the
tape over. If you would like to win this Fabulous Treeswing from Starving, Fabulous Artists
present presents. Well, by the way, they've got some great Halloween costumes. Oh, I know.
Great Halloween costumes. You can be, again, calling, give us about 10 seconds after the
commercial start. 5-6-4-8-3-8-6. And we'll have the drawing at the end of the show and
you could be swinging. We should have been playing at John Anderson's on swinging. And
tonight we are going to be talking about Red Ribbon Week. I would like to display the
tie. For those of you who heard, at one time was Mad Dog Bruce Payette's tie. And for those
of you who heard the show this morning at HB's, I actually suckered him out of it because
Lil loves seashell. So this is the tie that I expended so much energy on this morning
on the show. How much time do we have left? Or do we have any time left? I don't know
if we have any time. That's it. We'll be right back. Start calling 5-6-4-8-3-8-6-now.
I am delighted to announce that this coming Friday morning at the Breakfast Club at Memorial
Hospital, our program will deal with support groups for moms. If you are a mom, if you
ever were a mom, or if you think you might someday be a mom, if you had a mom or just
know how to spell mom, we would love to have you at the Breakfast Club Friday morning.
You get a free continental breakfast, a free coffee mug to take with you Friday morning
at Memorial Hospital, so join us. Don't forget, for those of you about, I don't know, about
six months ago, we gave one of these away that my sweet little mother-in-law decorated
for my grandson, whom I call smart because he is, naturally, and it was delightful. This
is a tree swing from starving Fabulous Artists. You can call right now and get in on the drawing
but you'd better hurry. You only have about ten minutes to do that. 5-6-4-8-3-8-6. I have
two absolutely delightful people with me. I want to start out with Marcia because Marcia
has written a song about drug awareness. She spent a lot of time writing this, and I thought
you might like to just sing it for us now. Could you do that?
Norman, I asked you not to put me on the spot. I don't know, what else you could have said
that would have put me more on the spot? For those of you who listen to the radio show,
Marcia's on quite a bit, and it really gets squirreling when Marcia's on. She's really
a little, you know, but don't tell her I said that. This next lady, you're going to find
this hard to believe. This is the same lady I had on my radio show this morning, but I
said her name differently. I think this morning I was saying, what, Maisel, it's Maisel. Did
I say it right? Maisel. Guess it real fast. Kind of East Texas. This is Donna Maisel,
y'all. Did I do that right? I did good. Like I say, I'm good to her because she's the one
that I saw delivering stacks of proclamations to the mayor to be signed the other day. You
work in the city manager's office. Not one of those proclamations was mine after fighting
off thousands of irate Rush Limbaugh fans all week long. What do I get? Nothing. Nada.
But anyway, Donna is the coordinator for Red Ribbon Week coming up this coming week, and
it's a very important time. There's a lot of things we can do. We can have education
programs. We can have good law enforcement. But unless the community shows that it does
support drug awareness efforts, there's really nowhere to go from there, is there?
No, there's not. It's a very special time when volunteers and parents come together
to unite against the war against drugs to show their support in the making a difference
against drug usage in our community. I am so in favor of Red Ribbon Week that every
day I carry my Red Ribbon down to Chris at Benita Cleaners, and she starches it and irons
it every day of Red Ribbon Week. That's how intense I am about this. You know, you often
wonder how movements get started, how things come to be. And I think the story of how Red
Ribbon Week comes about is really a beautiful, beautiful story. You want to refresh us on
that? Sure. It all started with Enrique Camarena, a drug enforcement agent, was working on a
case in Mexico, and he was brutally murdered by drug traffickers. His hometown community
in Florida started with just a handful of people around the kitchen table, and they
were so outraged by his murder that they decided to take it upon themselves to start a group
to make a difference in the war against drugs on a non-criminal type setting. To me, that's
an incredible story, and it just shows what people can do if they want to. I would love
to see a time when during Red Ribbon Week in Nacodotus, realize I've said that right
three times in a row, during Red Ribbon Week in Nacodotus, every single person in the city
would be wearing one. It would be amazing, it would let some folks know that we're not
going to take it anymore. Marsha O'Hors with the Community Coalition, what is your official
title? I just used to say, hey, Marsha, you know. Program development and evaluation.
Boy, that's impressive. You like that? Program development and evaluation. Now, how did you
say my last name? Oh. I just say, I always say, oh. That's wonderful. No, because in
the beginning, I think that you used to mispronounce my last name, and so I think that now you
mostly just say, Marsha instead of saying my last name. See, nobody spells her name
right, you know. No one does. Now, you would expect O to be spelled with a round thing like
that. And you just happen, you just happen to have the last name Johnson, which everyone
knows, Johnson. Well, everybody can spell that except just about everybody says John
Stun, you know. But yours is spelled O-C-H. Right, right. Now, why don't you say, ouch,
or ouch, or something like that? Well, in Germany, it's pronounced ach. Is that not
correct? Did I get that on the TV screen? From now on, you have been dubbed ach. Marsha
works with the coalition day in and day out from its inception. And so many programs are
now going, so many things are being done. Can you tell a difference in the drug problem
in Nacogdoches? First of all, for those of you who listen, who think that we don't have
a drug problem, like major big time drug problems in Nacogdoches, you've been isolated, you
know, in a room by yourself for a long time. We've got some big problems. We have some
big problems. We're like any other place in the great U.S. of A. We all have problems.
Nacogdoches is a smaller community, so proportionately our problems are going to be, you know, smaller
than, say, Houston or Dallas. But we have our problems, and we're getting more of the
gang involvement. And anything that's happening in Dallas and Houston, we're going to see
here on a smaller scale. But I do think that we're making a big difference. And something
I'd like to say, since you did mention I was in on the inception of the coalition, is that
one of the things that we did write into the original proposal was a committee to work
on Red Ribbon Week, because at the time that we wrote that grant, there was not a group
that worked together on Red Ribbon Week. There were individual groups that did their own thing,
but there was no centralized group. And so that's something that we wanted to get started
in. We did that. And I don't mean to say that everyone is working together at this point,
but if anyone has a question, they want to know how they can get involved. Now there's
a place to call, whereas a few years ago, when I was trying to find out how to get involved
in Red Ribbon Week, there was no place to call here in Nackadoches. I had to call Lefkin,
which we're very grateful to Lefkin for leading the way for us.
You know, a lot of people hear about problems, whatever the problem is, it may be drugs or
crime or whatever the problem is, and say, well, I wish it was something I could do about
it. And you discover in about 99% of the cases, when people are given a chance to do something
about it, they don't do anything. We have gotten great participation in the community
coalition, but it's still, there's still just a very small percentage of the community
that's involved in it. You can imagine what would happen if this whole community got involved
in the coalition. Red Ribbon Week is the same way. It is a way for you to do something.
It doesn't take a lot of time. It's not a lot of work. All you have to do is to wear
a red ribbon and maybe attend some events if you'd like to. But it's a way that you
can really say, I wish there was something I could do and really mean it. Now, when we
come back, Donna's going to give us a full rundown on all of the things that's going
to be taking place starting Saturday, I believe, and there's a lot of things to do. Don't forget,
you still have, through the next commercial break, to call if you'd like to get in on
our drawing. I would love to announce that you're the winner. The neat little tree swing
from Starving Fabulous Artists present presents. If you get a chance to go by, they got some
neat stuff in there. I'd love to browse through there. It's right next to Benita Cleaners
at North and Carolyn. Call right now. Don't wait any longer. You've got about five minutes
to call 564-8386. We're going to take a break. We'll come right back and let you know more
about Red Ribbon Week. Welcome back. And just because I'm this kind of guy, I'm going to
give you about two or three more minutes to call in on the drawing. We'll have the drawing
just before we go off the air. 564-8386. Mad Dog Brew's called in. They're watching
the show. And I just want you to know you're not getting it back. Now, you lost it fair
and square. It is my eye, Brew's, you know. I can outrun you. You're big enough you can
overpower me if you ever catch me, but I can outrun you. Donna, we have got a ton of things
happening starting Saturday. Well, we already have things that have started. Like I say,
this is all started and I didn't even know it. It's a good thing I had my ribbon on.
October the 15th, the Court Club sponsors Friday Night Live for children ages eight
through 16 or just about driving age. And we had a room set up for them and they made
banners. There were drawings and prizes given away for everyone that participated in the
banner making process. There was an educational video and they had a wonderful time. We've
got some great banners to be displayed in our drug march that will be this Saturday,
the 23rd at 9 a.m. And we're asking everyone in the community to come down and just walk
with us and march with us. Some are riding in cars. Some are driving bicycles and things
and show the support to the community. They do support a drug free community. Yeah, everybody
except Lail, of course, she's going to have to come home. You know, they're going to be
on their shoulders. You know, she's going to be a little bit different. But seriously,
like I said, you always want to know what can I do and you're busy and you don't know
what you can do. Saturday, all you got to do is come and walk down the street. Before
you go to the Oktoberfest. Before you go to the Oktoberfest. Come to the march. And what
time do you want people to start assembly? The parade will start at 9 a.m. They need
to be there just a few minutes early on the corner of East Main and Shawnee. It's a vacant
lot by Mr. Q's and they will march downtown. We'll have a police escort and we'll end
up at the courthouse with a short speaker speech session and some lemonade. I was wondering
who the short speaker is. I might be in the running for that. I thought he might be Craig.
It would be kind of fun to be creative. You know, maybe fix a little creative sign or
do something like that. Yes, there will be quite a few groups carrying posters and like
I said, the Friday Night Live group made banners that will be carried by some and some cars
will be decorated. There may even be a float or two. We're hoping that that will come off.
Friday Night, we have a big wooden red bow that is going to be displayed at the high
school football game. I just heard about that a long ago. This is neat. It's going to be
around the neck of the opposing team quarterback. It will be displayed at the football game.
There will be a little red bow to be tied on homecoming corsages and the homecoming court
has been asked to wear them and we've been getting quite great participation with that.
The big red bow is going to find its resting place in the school with the most essays that
have been entered in our essay contest. And we've got to talk about the essay contest.
This is, first of all, such a great idea. But when you hear all about it, it's kind
of nice. Tell them about the essay contest. Well, it's for grades three through eight
and we have asked the children to write why I should be drug free. The school with the
greatest amount of participation will receive the big red ribbon for the entire year to
be displayed at their school. And they will also receive a demonstration from the drug
dog hunter from the police department. Wouldn't it be funny if the dog went straight to one
of the teachers desk? You know, that would be, you know, what could happen. Stranger
things happen. Not only that, but maybe some of them are going to make an appearance next
Wednesday on the Norman Johnson show at HB's Grill. We're going to try to work that out,
right? Yes, we are. And I do want to note that we will have 12 individual winners. And
each individual winner will have a pizza party sponsored by Little Italy for their entire
classroom. I think that is great. So there's going to be 12 classes in the school system
somewhere that's going to have pizza, right? That's correct. That's that's neat. And the
pizza is from where? Little Italy. Okay, we want to give them a good plug. Yes, we certainly
do. Because I think that's a very, very good thing for them to do. Now you have snuck
a peek at some of the essays, right? Yes, I have. Tell me about them. Well, most children
are talking about being drug free to continue their education, wanting to be in control
of their bodies and their minds. They don't want to lose control and want to be successful
in life. And that's the general tone of most of the letters, but they are very exciting
when we're getting a great amount of participation. And from what you've told me, I would imagine
in some you can feel some pain too. Yes, we can. Because drugs are very close, aren't
they? They are. There are a few children already that have written about personal experiences.
And it is a little heartbreaking, but it will certainly open your eyes and let you know
that it does touch everyone in some way or fashion. Okay, now when is all of this going
to be judged? They will be judged this weekend. A winner will be announced next Tuesday.
Alright, and we're going to try to have a few of them on the show Wednesday when I do
my morning show at HB's Grill. So you might want to say thank you to them for just coming
down and for writing their essays. Just be there and come by and say hi to them. And
we're going to try to work it out, I think, to maybe on one of my morning shows, if we
can work it out with the school and the teachers to have maybe all 12 of them at some time
or the other. So I think that that would be kind of neat. But we'll try to have some
of them Wednesday. And again, it's got to be an incredible experience for a child to
just sit down and write out what they are exposed to every day. And all of our children
are exposed to drugs, aren't they, Marcia? Yes, they are. And I read one that I found
very touching. This little child ended his essay with, I don't use drugs because my
parents love me. And I thought, yeah, that's really neat. I like that. You know, sometimes
I think that it's a shame that the kids are the ones that get in trouble over drugs. They're
the ones that the cops have to pick up and they're the ones that have to be carried in.
And sometimes it's really the parent's fault. More and more people are saying that all of
this begins and ends in the home. And I think it's interesting when a child brings that
into his essay. Yeah. So if you're a parent, next week would be a real good opportunity
just to sit down and talk to your kids about anything else? Yes, we do have several things.
We have pledged to be drug free signup table in the mall. And we've also distributed them
to daycare centers. And we will have a tree in the center of the mall sponsored by the
mall. And each person that signs up to be drug free, pledged to be drug free, will have
their name tied on the tree with a red ribbon. And that tree will be there through the 31st
of October. And each person that comes to the mall and visits can look at it and find
their name. We're hoping to have the tree completely red. Now, if they put their name
on the tree, don't they get something else? Yes, they do. The mayor will issue a certificate
of recognition and honor of their pledge. And that will be presented to the person at
the mall when they sign up. So finally, a way I can get something for the mayor. It's
about time, Judy. Well, actually, I do have a surprise for you. It's not from the mayor,
but it is from the red ribbon committee. For your participation in the Texans War on
drugs. It's very seldom anybody surprises me. Oh, that's neat. Thank you. Well, that
was just plumb. I might as well end the show now. No, we've got to do this. This is all
next week and we'll be telling you all about it as we go along. Anything else we need to
know about coming up that we didn't talk about? SFA will be participating in the next week's
activities. The better Sigma Phi group will have a table in the UC passing out ribbons
and stickers and party pamphlets, party planning pamphlets. And these pamphlets are very exciting.
They're on how to plan a party without alcohol or drug usage. And there are some good recipes
for mixed drinks and hors d'oeuvres for parties. So we're very excited about that. Okay, great.
We are about to give away the Treeswain from starving fabulous artists present presence.
And after we do this, I need to announce the hours of SFA present presence. Oh, yeah, yeah,
because when you go by and pick up your gift, we need to let people know. Why don't you
be doing that while I shake them up? SFA present presence is open from 10 o'clock until 2 o'clock
in the afternoon, Monday through Saturday, excuse me. From 10 to 2. And that's when
you can claim your prize. Now, ladies and gentlemen, Donna Mayzel. Do I get to announce
it? You get to announce it. And the winner is Nelson Reedy. Well, Nelson, congratulations.
Did we say his name right? Yeah, I would assume I never know if I say anybody's name. I haven't
been keeping up with my time cues. So hold something up there. Nelson Reedy, congratulations.
You can go by any time afternoon tomorrow to starving fabulous artists present presence
at the corner of North and Carolyn Street. And from 10 to 2. But it won't be there
until noon. Donna, Marsha, thanks a bunch. Thank you. Here we got to go. See you tomorrow
morning at 6 30 on 8 60 K S F A. Until then, bless your house, dear hearts.
Thank you.
