Hello, this is Alex Chapman. I'm sitting with one of the most influential rappers of our
time probably, but this is Big Boy.
First of all, you made one of the best albums of the year in my opinion. Tell me a little
bit about how that solo album came to be and why it seemed like it took a little while.
So if you could talk a little bit about why it took not as long as it did.
I started working on it a few years back and then just had a little creative differences
with the label which we worked out. I went over to Dev Jam and I got two record deals,
now one with Jive, with Outkast, and I got another, I got a three album deal with Dev
Jam. So, you know, it's really good, avenues to put out music.
So you're an Atlanta man, everybody knows that, and I need to, of my international swag,
or national swag, but first national, maybe then international. So you gotta teach me some
like, what are some like Atlanta slang words or some like Atlanta words that I can use
at my disposal.
Well, my newest word, and I just really love these words, a set of words is teabag, and
that's the word for the day, for the rest of the year is teabag. It's not really Atlanta
thing, but it is, because I'm in Atlanta, so you know, it's like crumpets and tea, you
know what I'm saying? So we like to do that, we like to get our balls sucked off. Yeah,
oh yeah, no, this was every year around this time, we got to say happy Swalla days.
Happy Swalla days.
And that's the best, that's the best, it's better than the holidays, Swalla days are
better, because you can get them all year long.
So walk me through like, what's like a big boy's Swalla day every year?
Well, first it starts off, I might go up, go tell them all up for a minute, you know,
make a few people happy. After that, I get, you know, I get me a little bit of happiness.
It sounds like we have a very similar Swalla day to me. That's what I do. I get people
some chapstick, whatever they need at the mall, you know what I mean?
It's happy Swalla days, a swanica.
Swanica, I need that one.
Yeah, yeah, you can do this with Feliz Navidad, you know what I'm saying? Feliz Swalidad.
Feliz Swalidad.
There you go, we're making history right here.
Don't drop none of it.
So one thing I've always wanted to know, obviously you're part of the legendary group Outkast.
And I've always wanted to know how you and Andre met and how Outkast kind of came to be
if you can tell the short version of that story.
Short version, it was a school called Tri Stegas High School. It was a school of performing arts.
I was in the 10th grade. Dre was new to the school. I was new to the school.
There was a lot of gangs out there that was wearing started jackets in the suede at least.
And you know, me and Dre was really just into the girls and into music.
And we met in the lunchroom, we hooked up.
One day I went to his house and he used to do a lot of air brushing.
Me and my brother hung out with him.
And from that day on, man, this has been my dog.
So we have our three questions that we ask every artist.
So I have to ask number one, when Big Boy is interning with a woman,
what is the song that goes on that's the magic song?
I listen to a lot of different things, man.
When I was younger, I used to listen to a lot of shoddy.
Now I think it's a lot of eyes to brothers, maybe voice to Atlantis or something like that.
But back in the day, it was like smooth operator on the...
Smooth operator, your love is king, strong and cry, you know what I mean?
Love and luck is that whole album, yeah, doing it.
So take some advice from Big Boy, put on some Isley Brothers if you want to mix the magic.
Yeah, yeah, you better put a rub on too, because you will get them pregnant.
Because we're going deep, baby.
Because we're having a happy swallow day every day.
That's why I say use them as soon as you got it, it's all day.
Alright, so the second question is, what's the craziest performance you've ever had?
You've been all over the world, so I'm sure there has to be one or two that you can remember.
That you can tell the people.
Okay, one of the craziest has to be...
We did a big festival in Norway.
It was maybe like 30, 40,000 people and it was just magical, man.
You know what I'm saying?
They really know how to do it over there.
They like to party overseas and that was one of the best performances.
I don't know the name of the festival, but it's Norway and it happens around August, September.
What's been your craziest fan encounter or your weirdest, weirdest way someone's giving you a demo?
I'm sure you've dealt with some stuff.
We had a party in D.C. and there was a lady that came up.
She was asking me why I breathe dogs and she's like, that's not right.
We got so many dogs in the world and you got enough money and you don't need to be doing it.
She kind of charged me and somebody grabbed her by the throat and walked her to the floor on her back.
She was mad at me.
We love her.
I'm sure she's a huge fan.
I'm sure she's a huge fan and dog lover after that experience.
Thanks so much, Big Boy, one of the greatest artists out there.
Tell them how they can check you out on Twitter, Facebook, whatever.
You check me out on Twitter, Twitter all day long, at Big Boy, at b-i-g-b-o-i, bigboy.com.
