Indians first settled in the Okonomawak area because deep woodlands and clear lakes provided
them with wild gain, fish, and raw materials.
Settlers arrived in 1837 lured by the area's beauty and abundant resources.
The arrival of the railroad provided easy access from Chicago, Milwaukee, and other Midwest
cities, making Okonomawak a favorite summer retreat for tourists and wealthy vacationers.
The Shuttler Brothers, famous wagon builder from Chicago, were one of the many wealthy
families to build a stately summer home on one of the numerous lakes.
Many of these historic homes have been destroyed through the years, but the Shuttler Brothers'
summer mansion, Monbeju, or Maijul, has been restored to its original grandeur and is a
registered historic site today.
In fact, this spectacular Victorian home is currently the Inn at Pine Terrace, Bed & Breakfast.
John and Ruth Gressley purchased the inn in 2010 and made it their home.
These live-in innkeepers enjoy sharing their home with the guests of the inn.
Located a few hundred yards from beautiful Fowler Lake, the Inn at Pine Terrace is within
walking distance of historic downtown Okonomawak.
There is easy access to lakes and parks that make Okonomawak the charming oasis that it
is today.
