Oh man, what is the teen...team?
Do I like to say hi?
I like to say it's a group of 15 high school juniors and seniors
who have been picked and hired by the education department in the high
that works in the museum with people in the museum
and basically we work on teen programs and events
so we help plan teen programs and we have a summer project
We're giving tours to not only guests and visitors
but soon we'll be giving tours to actual museum staff
Get to do a lot with the museum
I keep saying the word museum
and we got chosen because we're really interested in art
We come together and really experience the art
We talk about and discuss the art
We just do a lot
We make art
We're going to be putting up art in the hallway of the museum
We're all artists in our own right
We're all really interested in art and in learning about art
We're kind of like a family
We do a lot of stuff
There isn't really a solid plan I guess
We do a lot of things
It's hard to put an exact definition to it
A group of teens
What does a teen-team member do every day?
It always starts out the same
Everyone's pretty quiet on their phone
listening to music
It varies
First we come in and we usually either work on an art piece
or do something more informal for the first hour
And then Shannon comes
and she gives us an overview of our day
And then other days we're either touring
or someone's giving us a tour
or we're speaking about a tour
We're either giving a tour or receiving a tour
or we're working on something to put up
for an exhibit that we have
or for kids for the first few hours
Then when lunch comes around, everyone's a lot more open
We start talking more
and it starts to feel a little more comfortable
Can a dinosaur kill a human?
And then somehow we manage to fall off there
You bet your ass it can
Did you not like do it?
Oh gosh, I don't know
I think that a good everyday activity is just brainstorming
because we do so much brainstorming
Yeah, we brainstorm
Like, you know, we think brainstorming
Do we have a system?
Raise your hand if you're saying banana
I voted for banana
I voted for safe banana
It works
We're very nice, we all listen to each other
Brainstorming process is a lot of work
Like, you know, we have like
But a lot of work here in here
It's like all over the place, really
We do a lot of sticky notes
We like to sit around our giant table
with a lot of really, really big pieces of paper
We'll occasionally be using sticky notes or notebooks
Eventually you have a big, sticky note full of ideas
and that's kind of like how you brainstorm
and eventually it turns into a big plan, hopefully
So they come up with ideas like team night
or team experience
So it's just trying to get teenagers back into like museums and art
Like, how can we make it interesting since we're teenagers
and we should know, like, what teenagers should like nowadays
We took an idea that someone from Georgia Tech gave us
and then we actually made our own
We actually started, we started planning from that day
how we wanted to design the cultural photos
We call them adventure boxes, probably not really a good word
The adventure boxes as well
They are our version of a teen tour
So we have activities that are oriented towards young people
My favorite portion in the adventure box is the emojis
just because it's really cool
We have come up with a few events that we're trying to make work
We're working on a giant event called team night
Team night is crazy
We have workshops, we have tours
We have a dance party
I wouldn't call them dance moves, I would just
Shoulder shimmies are like, hip movements
Christmas and Halloween together
We have everything for every kind of teen
I cannot wait, it's like teen night, I can't wait
It's like, it's gonna be so fun
I'm on a decorations team
I would say it's definitely worth the person's time
just because you do meet wonderful people here
How did she work? It's so hard for us
She's always so happy
Personally, I feel like we're just a really big group of cool kids
who work at the High Museum
It's almost like you're making a difference in your community
because you're creating something that other teens are going to come and enjoy
and it's like you're having your own little mark on this museum
Shannon really just cares about us
It's really cool to see how much you can accomplish
when you're that confident in yourself
and she makes us really confident in ourselves
You do create new friends
You create people who almost only have the same interest as you
You're gonna really enjoy it
and it's like long-term friendship
It's not really something that you could just do and just leave it
It's there forever
