Unsolved murders, dozens of them in Colorado Springs, dozens more throughout southern Colorado.
Inside room 2226 at the Springs Police Department is a cold reality.
A victim in each file, and each file means a killer walks free.
For him and for his family, we'd like to bring this to closure.
Retired federal investigator Al Sarno is one of several volunteers working the cold cases,
including the case of college student Jameel Salam.
He did not have any affiliations with gangs, did not appear to be involved in any illegal
activities, had a fairly wide circle of friends, seemed very, very well liked.
2007, Salam's gunned down in the parking lot of the Pine Creek Apartments on Chapman
Drive.
Three young men wearing masks came up to Jameel and a girl who was with him.
I guess she reported that he tried to shield her and she ran away and next thing you know,
he was gone.
Jameel loved basketball, became a star player at Whitefield High School.
He was in college hoping to become a lawyer.
Four hours before he was shot to death, Jameel was at his dad's house, gave him what would
be a final kiss goodbye.
That's the last memory I have of him, you know, you know, kissing me on the forehead.
Jameel's family's praying for justice, just like so many other Southern Colorado families.
Barbara Freischlach was found in her home at 2222 Constellation Drive.
She owned the Broadmoor ski shop, was found dead in 1986.
She was found by her husband, KG, who was away on a trip.
And when he had come home, he had found her.
She had apparently been shot several times in the kitchen portion of their house.
Officer Joe Mariatos worked the cold cases.
Barbara's husband was the president of the Chamber of Commerce and was in Reno when
the murder happened.
He was in a meeting, trying to expand the U.S. Olympic Committee's role in Colorado
sprays, he died last year.
Newspaper reports from 1986 show, no motive and no suspects in Barbara's murder.
All the cold cases are different and all of them are the same, a victim, a killer and
a piece of missing information.
It's a puzzle and every piece you can put in that puzzle starts making that picture clear.
