the man behind the scenes who makes us all look better than we truly are Joe
Artis Horn
Hi Derek thank you and our guest who has written a book
that will be the topic of our conversation for the next couple of weeks
she's executive producer of Freedom Today Television National Director of Regents
for Christian Women in Media and the author of a brand new book just out from
Charisma Publishing
No Regrets How Loving Deeply and Living Passionately Can Impact Your Legacy
Forever
Here's the book it is our honor to welcome for the first time to Skywatch TV
Robin Bertram
Robin welcome. Thank you Derek it's an honor to be with you all thank you
the title No Regrets boy those are words that I think all of us wish
we could say explain the title of your book
Sure Derek when my father was on his death bed
he looked me in the eye and he said Robin I have no regrets
and I thought for a minute how can a man at 84 years old
possibly say with certainty that he has lived a life
of no regrets and I really started to ponder that
in my heart I thought at forty some
something I had plenty of regrets and I thought
how can you reach the end of your life and have such
a statement and it really started some introspection in my own heart
it took me on a journey to look at my father's life
and the legacy he left for me and
what he did throughout his life that got him to that point
where he could actually say I have no regrets. Now you're a preacher's kid
yes I am you're saying next to another preacher's kid
another guilty pk yes but that's even more extraordinary because pastors
they have challenges in their lives especially with their families that
that do lead to regrets and for him to be able to say that that's powerful it is
very powerful
my father planted five churches he was in a gospel group
the freedom he was based
he was based some day when I grew up
and so I grew up as a kid going to
church going to revivals
hymnsings my father would host
large hymnsings in our city of Covington Virginia when I was a child
so the background was certainly there but even growing up
in a pastor's home you have your own challenges and I certainly had plenty of
my own challenges so it really drove me
to take a look at his life and get an understanding because I want to be able
to say the same thing
and I want to be able to pass forward the legacy that my father left me
you know what he's looking down on you right now and he is so proud
he's right there at the rail with the rest of them cheering us on
I believe that. My dad passed a little younger than your dad but
we had the opportunity in the final weeks of his life to talk
a lot we didn't know at the time that it was
his last days but he shared a very similar sentiment
but about 15 years before that
when he was about the age I am now he had a heart attack and
survived it changed his eating habits and exercise regimen
but his the way he interacted with me changed
before his heart attack I never heard him say
to me son I love you and it was still a challenge for him to do it
he would always kind of you know you know get me in a bear hug and love you guys
but for him that was a big deal and he said to me
toward the end of his life I realized after that that keeping that
emotion inside was really stupid
your book deals with living passionately loving deeply
did my dad have some kind of revelation there and how does it relate to
what you discovered as you began researching and writing your book
well I what really it drives the
the love chapter for me I started to look at
the lives of Christians that I knew
Apostle Paul taught the Corinthians how to love
we think of the love chapter as the wedding
verse. Yes as the wedding verse but it's not
it's a picture of how Christians
should live their life and if we could all embrace that one
section of scripture our lives would be radically different
we would put others first we would not be jealous we would not be
boastful we would not be envious we would be patient
and kind and loving and if you think through that
if you just think through that one section what it can do to change
your life it can radically change your life
we don't do enough introspection unfortunately
we go through our day and we keep the same habits
we look at things the same way and
this book no regrets challenges our love walk
it challenges us to take a look at how we love
how we truly love do we love like Christ
loved do we love like Apostle Paul
taught us to love or do we act like the world
do we suffer with jealousy and envy and boastful and
prideful and so I put in this book in the in the back of the book there's a
love challenge
where I in encourage the reader
to take a look at their days every single day for
30 days and rate themselves
personally and privately how did I do today
I actually had a challenge just last week on this
very topic isn't that the way things go
I had someone who had had told me they were gonna
do something and they did the opposite
and I lost about two days of work and I was so upset
and I struggled and I stood the more I thought about it the
angrier I was angry and I was frustrated
and I was justifiable
and I caught myself on day two
and I picked up the telephone and I contacted that person and I said will you
forgive me
I've been angry for two days and that was a real challenge
it was a real challenge rightfully
you know I had a right to be frustrated at the situation
I did not have the right to carry anger in my heart
directed towards that person and so even the love challenge for me after
writing it
it sparked in me a desire
to walk godly and do what I know to do
I'm not to carry anger at someone I'm to release them
and to forgive them and so even
after writing the book I was challenged to take that love
chapter and think through okay what are you gonna do now
are you gonna live what you say you believe
and it's a beautiful challenge it'll make you think differently
you know as members of the body of Christ we're all used to taking communion and
that is a symbol of our unity and our love for one another
and Paul admonishes us to before you go down there and accept
or sit in the pew and accept the wine before you
participate if you have anything against a brother or sister
you make it right or don't do it absolutely and he's so right because
our forgiveness of others affects us
the other person may not even be aware that we're mad at him
and on social media I mean can we talk about how
Christians backbite each other on social media
look stop it yeah just stop it instead of if you've got something
go to that person privately don't err it on
that person's wall for goodness absolutely and the forgiveness part
is so vital for our own health and well-being
and the problem is we bury things
we think we're dealing with it we think we've forgiven
and deep inside we're carrying aught
against another individual and that's very damaging
in no regrets I do address a chapter on forgiveness because it's such
a vital part of our Christian experience
we have to constantly check ourselves
am I holding things I work with women across the country
I lead leaders in Christian women in media and so I minister with women
across the nation and one thing that I see consistently sharing
people will hold in their heart animosity
against a parent that have failed them a father who was not there
a mother who was abusive and a lot of
a lot of times what happens is they'll go to communion
and they'll take communion thinking their heart is clean
but never addressing those hidden issues that are deep-seated in their hearts
against a parent against a sister or brother
and often times because we are Christian
we think we can't hold that
so we bury it instead of deal with it
oh denial denial a very serious because God knows
what's in our heart and the Bible says our hearts are deceitfully wicked
so with this book I I wrote the book in such a way that
it causes the reader to take
a time of deep introspection am I holding
am I holding the animosity against someone
and I'm glad you guys are here you would be here anyway but I'm glad Joe that you joined us because
this book is not just for women I was just gonna say that that one of the things
that really stood out to me about no regrets
was and we should bring our viewers in on this because one of the most
important premises behind the book to me
is what you were dealing with
a couple years back a few years back that that put you in this mindset where
you felt like you had to make every day count it wasn't just that you got up one
day and said you know
the world needs another you know positive thoughts are a ten step to joy
book
about loving and forgiving and so forth
you were brought face to face with the nightmare
that most people
live in some degree of concern about that moment where the doctor walks in and
says
boom you have X number of days to live
and I I would love for you to share that part of the testimony because that to me
is one of the most important things that drives
the reason you wrote this book was this expectation according to the doctors and
physicians that you only had a very narrow
time to live Joe it was
it was shocking I have been perfectly healthy
all of my life never had any issues
uh... my daughter was graduating from
nc state
and my house was filled with company
uh... we had a celebration for graduation
my
uh... I had painted
a friend's home uh... just volunteered to help her paint a room in her house
and uh... my arm was bothering me after I painted that room
and I thought that I had pulled a muscle something simple my sister and my niece
came to my home
for uh... the graduation party and they said
you need to get to a doctor today
we were leaving to go on family vacation to to italy the next morning
and I said there's no way I have a house full of company we're leaving
I have to pack
uh... my sister and my niece made me go to a walk-in clinic
and I walked in and I explained to the nurse what was going on and within just a
few minutes she said
just sit here uh... the doctor will be right in
and the doctor came in asked a few questions and said I'm very sorry robin
to tell you this
but it's neurological
and I didn't even know what that meant
I hurt my arm, I'm painting, I'm fine really
and he said as soon as you get back from
your vacation you need to go
to uh... have a full medical work out
and so I went home and he he gave me four diagnoses that it could potentially be
and uh... I went home and I researched all of those Joe
I went to Italy and what what happened when I was on vacation
I would travel with my family during the day and see the sights and
had a wonderful time but at night
I would go into the room
and I would put my head in the pillow
and I would cry out to God
this cannot be
and you told your family any of this yet? My husband knew
and so
I got back from Italy
and I went
to the church first
and Joe I said I'm not going to a doctor until I am anointed
and prayed over so I was anointed I was prayed over
I couldn't get into a doctor for five months
and so I picked up the phone and I called Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville
I gave them my symptoms
the nurse said
a doctor will be right on the telephone
they had the chief
surgeon at the hospital got on the telephone
and said we want you to come right away
without a recommendation without a doctor without
anything which I thought oh this must be really serious
so I got there and they ran all the tests
and they took all the diagnosis off but one
the one they left on was a diagnosis that would require
no treatment
there was no treatment available
and there was nothing that they could do
they told me go home and wait
and at best
if we're right
you have two years to live
so I thought my daughter she's getting married I want to walk down the aisle
I haven't had my first grandchild yet
so my mind started reeling with all the
what I have not been able to accomplish
Joe I thought about the work that the Lord had given me
that I hadn't yet completed
I thought I can't leave until I get this work done
that you've given me to do you know how our minds work
as if God doesn't know
look God don't you realize
as if God doesn't know
this is totally going to mess up your plan
it's going to mess up
yes we talked about that plans
our plans versus his plans
and literally my life went on hold for two years
it just stopped I had a television show
Freedom Today I still have but the
the filming had to be put on hold
everything my speaking engagements everything had to stop
and I sat before the Lord and I cried out
and I cried out from the deepest part of my soul
because
Joe I believe in God I believe in his power to heal
I believe in his promises
and I knew that that God was with me
that being said it was the darkest days of my life
it was a very dark time
but through that darkness
God gives us a message to share
when we come back into the light
and that's what this book is
it's the message that God gave me
through that dark days
now the diagnosis that the doctor gave you was ALS
that is incurable
it is
it generally has about a two year
expiration date so to speak
but you've been cured
yes
not by a doctor
yes
at least not by an earthly doctor
mm-hmm
yes
we're gonna have to take a, are we taking a break
yeah
and we'll continue this discussion
how do we align our plans with God's plans
when those plans change
without him consulting us first
as we continue our discussion with Robin Bertram

Welcome back to Skywatch TV I'm Derek Gilbert
we're talking with Robin Bertram
she's the author of the brand new book
No Regrets live like you're dying
and she knows where of she speaks
the diagnosis of ALS Lou Gehrig's disease
which is essentially a death sentence
I mean all of us are under a death sentence
but yours was coming a lot faster than expected
that dark period that journey through the wilderness
that God took you through how did you realign your plans
with what God now had set before you as your plan
I mean how did you cope with that period of darkness?
Interestingly I started to look at priorities
what do I have in my hand that I can pass forward
to the next generation?
What do I have that's gonna influence and impact
my children, my grandchildren?
What kind of legacy can I leave them?
And I really started to look at my life
and what I had spent my life
my life has been a life dedicated to God
I have loved the Lord, I walked with God
I was saved at 13
but I wanted to pass things forward
so I started to look at what was most important
we think in modern society that what is important
to our children is the house we're leaving behind
or the cars that we drive or the jewelry we wear
or the check in the bank account
that is not what is important
and it's what's important the legacy that you live
you first have to build a legacy
then you have to live a legacy
that's the part we forget
what are we doing today?
What are we living out in our life
that is going to speak to the next generation?
What are they gonna say about the life
that we chose to live?
At my father's funeral
it was such a beautiful, beautiful time
I stood at his casket
and I remember person after person coming up to me
Robin had it not been for your father
our family could not have made it
if it had not been for your father
our family would have been broke
or he helped us through this situation
we didn't know what to do
and I thought that's why my father could say
I have no regrets
he spent his days with his priorities
aligned with what God's priorities was for his life
it wasn't about his priorities
it's God what are you calling me to do?
What do you want me to do today?
And when we set our plans
in line with God's plans
things work out
then we're assured
that we're living a life without regret
Amen I love this so much
before the break we talked about
how your diagnosis avails us
I have to ask you
when did you find out that you've been cured?
Well it was really a slow process
I went back at six months
and the doctor when I walked in the room
he I could see fear all over his face
I love that
you know I don't even want you to come in
and he did the test
and he said I see no further damage
now sharing what you need to know
is before I went to him
I was five minutes from my home
I could not figure out how to get home
if you asked me where I lived
I could not tell you
that's how severe
that was the state
so you know I want you to understand
the symptoms were very very scary
and very real
and so he said I don't know what to say
he said all I can say
is Robin will you come back in six months
and I said certainly I'll be back in six months
well I went back at the earmark
same thing he was very hesitant
when I walked through the door
like I don't want to see you
I walked in he did the test
and there was no further damage
and he had me come back one more time
six months later for a year and a half
so for a year and a half
you had to kind of just wait
to see if anything had changed
yes and that was when you were really exercising
probably what I would imagine
was the strongest effort you'd ever brought
to your prayer game
learning to lean and depend
and that is really where this book comes from
yes those days
yes it was
basically asking the Lord to do something miraculous
because men weren't going to figure this out for you
right that is so true
and the moment that I knew God had healed me
I didn't have anybody lay hands on me
but every day because I didn't know
if I would be able to
I recorded a prayer to God
so that if I couldn't speak out the prayer
I could listen to it audibly
on the recorder
and I recorded all the healing scriptures
in case I could not read
I could have the healing scriptures read to me
and I was driving home
I'd been teaching a class one morning
a Bible class
and the Lord said to me
he said I want you to go back
and say thank you
to the pastor for praying over me
and so I was thinking
oh I've got a contact lens in
and it was torn
and I don't know if you've ever had that experience
but it's so painful
it's like glass in your eye
and I'm thinking in my mind
I'll do that later I'm going home
I've got to take care of this contact lens
and I literally when I was passing the parking lot
I literally found myself turning in
literally found myself and I went in
and I spoke to the pastor
and I said I have to say thank you
and he was just in almost in tears
he was like you don't know what this means
this will be my Sunday morning service
and the day that I did that a year prior
a woman had died of ALS
and her husband had written him a letter
that he read that very morning
oh my gosh
I talk about encouragement from the Lord
for a pastor who needed to have some encouragement
and I knew as I turned away
you know the story in scripture
where the 10 were healed
but only one turned back
and I thought God
what if I had not turned back
what if I had not turned back
that is so powerful
and the Lord does speak to us
and then tries to lead us along the right path
he has miracles for you
he has miracles for your life
I encourage you to get this book
get it for your husband for Father's Day
this is something you will want to
in your ladies groups and your men's groups
you'll want to study through these passages
and challenge yourself
to do what Robin has done
you know take at least 30 days
and really examine your life
and your walk with the Lord
because you never know when this day
will be your last
that's right
that's the key message here
all of us are under a death sentence
and most of us live as though
it's at some point
postponed indefinitely
and we've got all the time in the world
to work on the legacy
leaving the important messages
the important lessons for our children
and in the meanwhile
enjoying the little things in life
and we'll talk about how that
changed for you in our next program
when you've got this diagnosis
there are miracles all around us
it's just most of us aren't paying enough attention
to notice them
I know them
I'm sitting next to one right here
but there are smaller ones that
will fill your days with joy
if you know what you're looking for
that's the message of the book
no regrets
we thank you for watching
as we keep watch
I'm Derek Gilbert and this is Skywatch TV
