At the farm at La Finca del Sur, it's a fifth annual midsummer event and we do this every
year and this year we dedicated the festival to family wellness in the South Bronx, you know,
better eating and moving to have fun. La Finca del Sur started five years ago and this was just
an empty lot full of weeds and now it's a thriving urban farm and it's really run by women of color
and I think it's a great achievement to see something like this in the Boogie Down Bronx.
It's a South Bronx. It's not a place where you can find helpful food. It's not a place where you
can normally find a lot of green space so La Finca is trying to address those issues through
giving people a space to raise fresh food and also to have fun. Kids can come here and get on
the swing, you know, run among the beds, learn about farming. So we started off with a cooking
demonstration. We made a healthy corn salsa which was absolutely excellent. Part of the stuff was
from La Finca del Sur. Then we had a canning demonstration by the one and only Classy Parker
who was part excellent when it comes to canning to let people know that you can have fresh fruits
and vegetables all year round if you know how to do canning. We had Tayera Experimental de Arte
which is a women's art group and they did jewelry making and they are friends. Most of these people
came and presented and worked today are friends of ours. They're Bobby Gonzalez, a Taíno storyteller
from the Bronx. We had the Bronx Children's Museum which have come and supported a couple of our events.
Oh and Bee Blossom. Bee Blossom are wonderful caterers and they take culturally appropriate
food and turn it into something you know really delicious and helpful. Then we rounded up with
Zumba so once you finish eating you got to lose those pounds. And so we had a Zumba and we had
belly dancing.
Who else? Who else did I? The Climate Housing Department of Housing. Healthy Home Workshop
gave pamphlet about how to prevent mold in the house bed bug. Right. You know kind of how to
keep the house clean and healthy that way to prevent asthma and other things that will affect the
family. Which are very high incidence here.
What is important to have a farm in any area especially in the Bronx because of the problems
we have when it comes to obesity and health problems and so really getting people to have
the connection back to the land. Understanding where their food comes from and equate that to
healthy living. I think it's paramount and very important.
Welcome to Lafinta Del Sordo. Fifth anniversary. Come one, come all and see this amazing,
amazing urban farm in the heart of the Bronx and always say Lafinta Del Sordo is the gateway to the Bronx.
