["Pomp and Circumstance"]
Good evening, dear hearts, and welcome to the show.
I'm Norman Johnson.
I'd like for you to meet my co-host on and off the screen,
Lil Mays Johnson.
Hi there.
Hi, I try hard.
I thought I'd actually stop by and do the show tonight.
What?
Nice to have you.
For those of you who were expecting a live show last weekend,
surprise, surprise.
I guess we could have done this from ICU.
We could have done this from ICU, I guess.
We may do that next time.
That'd be kind of neat.
Would be different.
To do the whole show from ICU.
Would be different.
At Memorial Hospital.
I'd like to say good evening to all the gang
who are supposed to be watching, you know, and all that sort of thing.
We have a good show for you now.
We have got a week full of rallies coming up.
We have got a lot of important things happening
that we're going to be telling you about.
And we are looking forward to that.
My guests tonight will be Bob Hurst.
If that name sounds familiar, you'll probably understand why in a little while.
And Cedric Whitton, whom I've just gotten to know today at the radio show.
There are some interesting things to tell you.
And tonight, again, the great Nacodotius giveaway.
And I have a prize that I was supposed to give away last week.
And Chris, if you're listening, I finally made it.
And I am delighted to be able to give this away.
These are beautiful.
I don't know if we can get in on them now.
This is porcelain earrings handcrafted by a local lady, Jennifer Matthews.
They are absolutely gorgeous.
Aren't those nice?
They are.
And each pair of earrings is different.
They're unique.
Yeah, each one that she does is different.
They're porcelain earrings.
They are beautiful.
And we're going to be giving these away tonight at the end of the show.
courtesy of CG, Chris, down at Starving Fabulous Artist Present Presents.
I have been out of circulation.
I think I've seen her once this week.
She's been so busy, she hadn't called in.
And I like to have her on the show before too long,
so we can catch up on all the gossip and everything.
But if you'd like to win these, it's very simple.
Only when I tell you to start calling.
Don't start calling now because nobody will answer the phone.
All you have to do is to call in 564-8386.
And just call in and register.
And we'll write your name down.
At the end of the show, we'll have a drawing.
And we're going to give away these beautiful porcelain earrings
handcrafted by Jennifer Matthews, courtesy of Starving Fabulous Artist Present Presents
next to Benita Cleaners.
And a lot of things are happening.
This is the final weekend out at the Lamp Light of Andrew Lloyd Webber Play, right?
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
And they tell me it's great.
Oh, I've heard that it's wonderful.
Big, big cast, some great music.
Well, the musicals are always my favorite.
They're real special to me.
The first play that I was in was a musical.
In fact, this musical is so popular, they've added an extra performance this weekend.
That's correct.
Thursday night.
There will be a performance Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night,
Saturday night, and a matinee Sunday at 2.
Okay, the evening performances are at 8 o'clock.
You've got plenty of opportunity.
Now, you do need to go to one of the outlets, even if you have season tickets,
and reserve your seats.
You can't just go we out on your ticket.
That's correct.
Nice glass castles.
There are several places you can go and reserve your seat.
But it's a great production.
And we sincerely hope you'll go.
I think it's going to be fun.
Oh, it will be.
And they've got a whole new season coming up.
And we've got a whole new show coming up, as opposed to the rerun that you saw last week.
What did we do, the air show?
I believe that's correct.
I think it was the 1929 air show that we did.
The crew here came up with that show.
You wouldn't believe how fast they came up with that show.
That as fast as I got you to the hospital.
It was as big a surprise to them as it was to me.
And as soon as the commercial starts, give us about 30 seconds after that,
and begin calling 564-8386.
And we'll have a drawing at the end of the show,
and you could win these beautiful porcelain earrings by Jennifer Matthews from SFA Present Presence.
And we'll be right back after this break.
People working closely together in a law has become a team.
And finding qualified replacements can really be time-consuming.
With one of our staff had a long-term illness,
Fredonia Temporaries took care of everything, saving us valuable time.
Fredonia Temporaries sent someone who fit right in.
They handle payroll costs like workers' compensation and unemployment insurance also.
I really recommend Fredonia Temporaries to anyone who's thinking of hiring office help.

It's SFA The University.
Not this time.
SFA stands for Starving Fabulous Artist.
Starving, no.
Fabulous, yes.
Artist, most definitely, presents presents that are unique and the lowest priced in town.
So everyone in town come and see all the unique crafts from SFAPP.
Starving Fabulous Artist presents presents located on North Street next to Griffith Hall.
It's like a whole new world.
A whole new world.
Now folks, do me a favor.
Don't wait until the very last to start calling.
You can call from now through the second segment of the show.
5-6-4-8-3-8-6.
These are beautiful, beautiful porcelain earrings.
From SFAPresentPresence, we'll give them away in a drawing at the end of the show.
So give us a call.
Bob Hearst joins me.
Bob is no stranger to this channel.
He's on every week.
What time is your show?
I'm not even sure what time we show.
I believe it's 8.30 on Mondays.
Bob does still have a show today.
Yes, he does.
Bob has not been canceled.
The only thing is ours is taped.
Ours isn't live.
Yeah, you don't get to do the fun live.
That's right.
You know, it's called A Few Good Men.
And the show is only going to be able to run about two or three weeks.
That's all a good time.
Don't expect this to be one of those shows that goes 15 to 20 years.
No, it is an excellent show.
Thank you.
We have a good time with it.
As I said on the radio show this morning, I think it's a good concept.
I think you have been profiling some people that genuinely are good men in the community.
How do you find them?
You know, Norman, there are so many that are out there, but I feel that in so much of our society,
what happens is we give 90% of the attention to the 10% of those people that are not good people
in the sense that they're always creating a problem or they're causing a ruckus.
So what we're trying to do is focus the attention back on that 90% that does most of the work,
but rather than talk about it, gripe about it, fuss about it, they just do it.
They're good men.
End of the shame.
And that's exactly right.
If you watch TV, you read the papers, even listen to the radio,
the things that you hear about are what bad people have done.
Exactly.
You don't hear what all of the good people, the hard-working people have done.
So if you get a chance, watch the show.
Cedric Quayton is a delightful gentleman.
I met him this morning on the radio show for the first time,
and just an interesting guy.
I think we are very fortunate to have him in Nacogdoches.
You are originally from Chicago.
That's correct.
How did you get to Nacogdoches?
I know you weren't sitting in Chicago one day and said,
I think I'll move to Nacogdoches.
He's still wondering.
Every morning Cedric wakes up and says, what am I doing?
No, I enjoy Nacogdoches greatly.
I really have become very fond of it,
and my wife considered it as home now, almost.
Originally from Chicago, I moved to Dallas to go to school at Bishop College.
Graduated from Bishop College, went to Dallas Theological Seminary,
left Dallas Theological Seminary, graduated from there,
and then started looking for areas where I could feel like I could do a good work,
a good ministry somewhere.
And just so happened, a friend of ours whose name is Dr. Conrad asked me
to go consider East Texas, and I said, I didn't think so.
However, he convinced me that I needed to come down here and see it,
and I came to Nacogdoches, and I really love the town,
and have been here ever since, for about a year now.
Cedric has a church that's called the Nacogdoches Bible Fellowship,
and I just found out where it is today,
and probably a lot of people have been wondering what that was that they passed by.
Tell them where it is.
It's located at 1422 East Star.
Now, let me give you Nacogdoches directions now.
Yeah, Nacogdoches.
Two blocks past the red light.
Have you ever known a small town?
In small town, all the radio commercials say, go two blocks past the red light.
You know, and people from out of town say, which red light?
The red light.
Go ahead.
It's right next door to the New Diamond Shamrock gas station,
and next door to Hardy's sign.
Hardy's has basically a university interest and a Star Avenue interest,
and our building sits right next door to that Star Avenue interest of Hardy's
next to the gas station, New Diamond Shamrock.
It looks like a house.
I notice you built a church close to the restaurant where you could go eat anytime.
Amen.
How long have you been there?
Has the church been open?
The church has only been there since April, actually.
We came down here in late September of last year,
and had some Bible studies there,
and then we decided on Easter Sunday to go ahead and organize and begin a church,
so that's what we did.
Now, tomorrow night at the Fredonia Hotel is a major event,
and it's called Jesus Is the Answer Rally.
Tell me about this.
Well, it's a rally promoting spiritual and racial healing in the community, basically.
As you know, we have a lot of problems that we're dealing with in Nacodotus,
but not just in Nacodotus, but in major cities,
major metropolis, and around the nation and country.
And there's a lot of tension that exists between the different ethnic groups.
A lot of barriers that divide our ethnic groups.
A lot of barriers that divide our churches.
A lot of barriers that divide our politics, and so on.
So this rally is a rally that tries to bring different ethnic group denominations together
for the same cause, trying to make us one, so it's centered around that.
We were saying this morning on the radio show, and I think it's so sad.
After all this time, and after all this work, and after all this effort,
there's probably more division in our country today, not only between races,
but as you said, religious entities and all that sort of thing.
It seems like rather than getting closer together, we're getting further apart.
You know, it's interesting you mention that, because that is so true,
and people will say, well, this is good, let's have another social event or a social program.
But Norman, the problem that we've run into is, that's what we've keyed on.
Man-made ways to try to solve man-made problems.
Tomorrow night, what we're keying on is the fact that Jesus Christ is the answer.
Now, you may worship him under one of, who knows how many, labels.
Exactly.
But that is the answer, that is the focus, because I have become an avid student of history
in the religious realm and in paralleling that in the secular realm.
And you can parallel the two and every time in recorded human history that there is a decline
in the structure of the religious foundations of the civilization,
you will see the social ills increasing.
When you have had many of the great revivals, people never seem to bring to the forefront
the fact that the social ills just suddenly began to disappear overnight.
So this is what we're trying to do tomorrow night in that racial area
and the ethnic area is to say, social programs that are man-made
always will leave out a key factor in this Christ.
So really, what this is, is an effort under the banner of the Christian faith to bring people together.
Absolutely.
You know, I sort of, you know, and some of my political friends,
everybody knows that I like to get involved in politics every once in a while,
but probably disagree with me, but I sort of, I sort of yearn for the day
when we don't have religious divisions, racial divisions, political divisions,
you know, this party does this and this party does that,
and we just become people under one banner.
Now the rally is at, what time do you want to?
It's on Thursday, tomorrow, which is Thursday, September 30th, 7 o'clock to 9 p.m.
And I'd like to note that pretty much the rally is pretty much going to focus on relationships,
you know, trying to get people to build intimate relationships with each other
because we feel that that's how the barriers will be taken down through those relationships.
And you might mention the speaker.
Yes.
Dr. Anthony, Dr. Anthony Evans is a fantastic speaker.
As a matter of fact, his radio station over, I found out today,
that over 250 radio stations his program is on.
Oh, really?
And so he is a nationally renowned speaker, the one God he just got to hear.
He's just very dynamic, very practical, and practically centered.
As a matter of fact, I'll say that even if people should disagree with the concept of what we're doing,
they need to come here, Dr. Evans, because he's that good a communicator.
It's an opportunity to have him in the community.
Call in right now if you'd like to win the ceramic earrings from SFA Presents,
564-8386, and as the saying goes, you ain't heard nothing yet. We'll be right back.
I'm Stephen with Adam & Steve's Carpets on South Street.

What I would give on hiring office workers is to let Fredonia Temperes handle it.
They can place people on a temporary basis or full-time,
and if someone doesn't fit in, there's no firing or rehiring.
Just call Fredonia Temperes for a replacement,
and paying a weekly bill is a lot easier than handling all those payroll requirements.
Fredonia Temperes does that for you, and all other people are pre-screened and tested,
so that saves time and money.
I think calling Fredonia Temperes just makes good business sense.
Attention, Nacogdoches. Nacogdoches Proud needs your support.
So please take the time to complete the membership application you received in the mail.

It's like a whole new world.
You're one of those people who have said, I never win anything.
It could be because you never try.
This is the easiest thing in the world. Just go to the phone and 5-6-4-8-3-8-6.
We'll do it for about another two minutes and run and call and register your name
and we'll have a drawing when it's over with.
We were just telling you about the rally tomorrow night at the Fredonia Hotel
that Jesus is the answer rally.
A great speaker on how many stations?
Over 250 stations.
Goodness gracious. I do good to stay on one. This guy is on 200-something radio station.
He is the pastor of one of the largest churches in Dallas.
They are building, as a matter of fact, a new facility now that will seat 4,000.
And they are very ministry oriented within the community.
This is not a meet, eat, greet, and go home type church.
I mean, Dr. Evans is a person that encourages his people to put feet to their faith.
So tomorrow night's message is going to be intriguing.
That would be great.
Now then, as if that weren't enough, Sunday afternoon will be a major event in this town.
And this is actually the second annual life chain.
I remember last year was a major event.
Various churches participating.
And if you don't know what's happening Sunday afternoon, if you drive down North Street,
you're going to be in for a big surprise.
Bob, tell us what's going to be happening.
Starting at 2 o'clock, there will be churches from all over this community
and people who are not affiliated with churches but who believe in the sanctity of life,
who will be simply standing in silent message with a sign, shoulder to shoulder,
stretching from Main and North Street all the way probably to the loop.
Last year we went to the loop, we had some spaces here and there.
But this year I am hearing reports of particularly some of the country churches
literally bringing people in by the van load this time.
So there's going to be a large involvement in this.
Just thinking this.
Here in Nacogdoches, people who feel so strongly about an issue
that they will be lined up shoulder to shoulder from Main Street all the way out to the loop.
That's incredible.
And Norm, let's bring up the fact that these are people who believe in the sanctity of life.
But they also believe that you need to take a stand in a way that would be respectful,
that would be decent and in order as God's word says.
They're not the kind that crash clinics.
They don't do anything wrong.
They don't even shout.
As a matter of fact, we really caution them that should people who protest against them
who take an opposite stance can get pretty ugly.
Unfortunately, those are never shown by the media, but should they be there to simply ignore them?
We are there with a message of peace.
I'm so glad that this is being done and it's being done in this manner
because it's a very important message.
And I think, and I guess it's true with any movement, there are always a few fringe elements
that can do some stupid things and destroy a whole movement.
And that's almost happened with the pro-life movement.
You've got some guy carrying a sign saying life is sacred and we've got a gun in our hand shooting a doctor
and it messes up the whole movement.
These are people who, as you say, with respect are simply standing there saying to the public,
this is what we believe.
You know what is tragic about that is, as we were mentioning earlier, I think even off the camera,
the media so often keys on the negative.
They do not key.
I could name them organization after organization that have done hundreds,
helped hundreds and thousands of young ladies everywhere from California to the East Coast,
but they're doing it quietly.
It does not bring attention.
It does not bring media.
They are going in and counseling.
We are constantly challenged with people saying,
well, you want them to not abort a child that is quote, not wanted,
which that is a total twisting of the facts.
But what is the alternative?
Well, as recently as two months ago, I spoke with an adoption counselor for this area that she told me.
She says, I have no problems finding families for babies.
She said the problem we have is finding babies that people want to give up.
So there are people out there.
There are so many families that will love and care and take care of them.
But they, once again, don't get the attention.
It's only the fringe element that does the one or two things that brings a lot of media.
Now, anybody can participate in that.
Absolutely.
Again, this is not a protest.
It's a demonstration, the sense of being a positive demonstration.
You're not going to disrupt traffic or anything like that.
You were even telling me something today that I really respected.
And that is, if there's a business that prefer that the people not line up in front of their business, you won't do that.
And that happened last year.
And not only that, but we go one step further.
And each church supplies their own, I'll use the term safety people, for lack of a better term,
that their main job is to make sure their people stay within the boundaries of the law, within safety,
and within reason and to help spot any potential trouble that might start.
Our only problems last year was the heat.
We had one or two people that, standing out there for an hour, it got a little warm for them, particularly somebody elderly.
Maybe a little cooler this time.
Yeah, let's hope so.
Now, if someone wants to participate, where do they go?
The best place would be the County Courthouse.
I believe it's about 1.30.
They'll begin to pass out materials.
They can check in there, register.
Interestingly enough, they are required to sign a statement that they will abide by the rules of conduct.
If they don't want to sign that, if they do not want to be there in peace and in respect, then they don't need to come.
Because we will require that.
Also, if they're a member of some particular church already, they can just contact their pastor.
Right.
And that pastor will have sign-up sheets and tell them exactly where they're scheduled to go.
Many organizations that are involved with it also, they can just contact the person in charge of the organization
who will probably be involved with it too as well.
And I know this is not a denominational point because last year, I mean, we had Methodist, Baptist, Catholics, Episcopalians, Presbyterians.
We had a lot of different churches represented.
Will that be true this year?
66 different churches will be represented, it looks like.
Definitely so.
Do you realize what a feat that is in and of itself?
Yes, that is fantastic.
There's such few events during the year that the various churches in town combined forces to accomplish something.
Sixty-something churches doing this.
Absolutely.
And the person who really, she has not asked for any credit, but I'm going to give it, and that's Miss Patty Miller, who God gave this burden.
She took the ball, she ran with it.
She has been very courageous.
As you well know, anytime you take a stand, funny things begin to happen and unusual things.
And there have been times of trial, times of stress.
David Welch has been very instrumental in helping as well as have many others.
But Patty was really the one that God gave the vision to first and had the courage to run with it.
And I really respect her for that.
And last year when it was all over with, and I would assume this year would be much the same, what was accomplished?
Could you look back and say this is what we accomplished?
Oh, yes.
I think they did a press conference and many people came to the press conference and talked about how they benefited.
When we got through, we had an opportunity to share just the main fact that life is worthwhile in a positive, peaceful way,
which was an opportunity for someone else to say, hey, maybe I'll take a second thought about maybe the abortion that I'm about to commit.
And so I thought that that was a worthwhile effort, if nothing else, but the fellowship that we had together just standing side by side.
I'll tell you, if nothing else, bringing that many churches together in a united effort is something like a small mirror.
Can you imagine what this town would be like?
Can you imagine what this town would be like?
If throughout the year, 60-something churches joined forces and said, we're going to accomplish this and this and this and this.
Boy, you're talking about a mighty force, that'd be a mighty force.
That's what reconciliation is all about.
So that's why the rally promoting reconciliation.
Yeah, that ties the two events.
Exactly.
And again, the times, the rally tomorrow night.
7 to 9 p.m.
The speaker is?
Dr. Anthony Evans.
Okay.
And what does it cost to get in?
Free of charge.
Just come in as you are.
How do you make money doing that?
It's not a money-making adventure.
We're trying to promote reconciliation not economics.
You know what I'm saying?
It's a free rally.
There is a free rally tomorrow night at 7 o'clock at the Fredonia.
The life chain is?
It will be 2 o'clock to 3 o'clock, I believe, isn't it?
Am I correct on that?
That's correct.
I know I have to start much earlier than that.
2 to 3, it will be one hour.
And I would ask those who are driving down North Street Sunday afternoon to respect the
people who are making their statement.
You know, there's always a tendency if you don't agree with somebody to honk and to
cheer and to make stupid gestures and things like that.
These are people who care enough to get out and try to make our society better.
So respect them while they're out there.
Are we saying we got one minute until the end, until it's all over with, not a wrap-up?
I mean, this is it.
We are going to give away a beautiful set of earrings thanks to my dear friend Chris
at Starving Fabulous Artists.
And Cedric looks like an honest man to me.
He's as honest as you can get.
Bob is a good man.
Bob is a good man.
Cedric looks like an honest man.
And Bob will keep Cedric rich and honest for our name and read the name.
I'll let you read it just to show that we're honest.
Nobody trusts me, but they'll trust Cedric.
Lady Di.
She did it again.
It's been a long time since she won something, so congratulations.
She was nice enough to come see me when I was in the hospital.
Several times.
Several times.
I know you were there.
There wasn't a lot I could do about it, but they kind of had me chained down, but we appreciate it.
Hey, we got to go.
We've had a good time.
We'll see you on the radio tomorrow morning at 6.30.
We'll see you back here Wednesday at 8.30 p.m. until then.
Bless your house, dear hearts.
Thank you.
