It's five and 10 on Skywatch TV for November 7th. I'm Derek Gilbert. Topic number five
today, Kelly shouldn't have had a gun. On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott told Fox
News that Kelly had been denied a permit. Devon Patrick Kelly had been denied a firearms
permit in the state of Texas because he'd been dishonorably discharged from the military.
However, a clerk at Academy Sports in San Antonio, where Kelly reportedly bought the
Ruger AR556 that he used to kill 26 people at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs
Sunday, said the gun was purchased legally. That Kelly had checked the boxes on the paperwork
saying he had no criminal history, no history of mental illness that would disqualify him
from owning a firearm or qualifying for a permit. So Kelly, if he should, if he should
have been disqualified because of his military court martial, how did this happen? Well,
now we know on Monday, the Air Force admitted that it had failed to enter a record of his
domestic violence court martial into a federal database that would have flagged him as ineligible
to possess a firearm. Might have stopped him from buying the rifle, which might have prevented
the horror in Sutherland Springs on Sunday morning. Air Force has reportedly launched
an investigation into how his records were handled. According to the New York Times,
that domestic assault for which he was court-martialed left his infant stepson with a cracked skull.
And it may be domestic, a domestic dispute that led to Kelly opening fire in that church
on Sunday morning. Local law enforcement says he tweeted a threat to his mother-in-law before
the attack. Kelly and his wife are estranged. His mother-in-law attends church at first
Baptist in Sutherland Springs, although she was not there on Sunday morning. Kelly died
after suffering three gunshot wounds, one of them reportedly self-inflicted.
That leads to topic number four, the war on thoughts and prayers. We're seeing a backlash
now. Every time political and religious leaders send thoughts and prayers. As President Trump,
local speaker Paul Ryan, many others did on Sunday after news of this tragedy, this terror
went public. Progressives who apparently are triggered by the thought that people of faith
would pray for the community, for the church, for the families of the victims. Progressives
like Keith Olderman, who is a little more crude than most. In fact, his tendency towards
crudity may be why he now broadcasts from his basement instead of on a nationally syndicated
television program. But I digress. Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said publicly that
prayers are not enough to prevent the next attack like this. Her point being that we
need to enact stronger laws against gun ownership to prevent the next attack. Well, Senator
Gillibrand is correct, but not for the reasons that she thinks. The reason that prayers alone
may not stop the next attack is because God created her and you and me and the 7 billion
other people on planet Earth with free will. That means the freedom to choose to do evil.
And the only way to prevent people from doing evil once they choose to do so is to make
it physically impossible for them to do evil. Now, since God declined to make us little
automatons who only do what is right and proper. And since progressives don't believe in God
anyway, the next option, of course, is government. Government exercising the power of having
more guns than you to compel you to do what the government says is right and proper.
So progressives, when you start lashing out against people who, who share their thoughts
and prayers and concern for those affected by horrific events like Sunday, just be careful
what you ask for because you're not going to like it when it gets here. There's a day
prophesied when the government will have that kind of power. And we're told it is not
a time when anyone would wish to be alive on planet Earth. Topic number 3, which relates
to topic number four, eyes in the skies over Texas, the Texas National Guard spent $373,000
last year to put controversial cell phone monitoring and eavesdropping equipment on surveillance
aircraft. This according to a report in the Texas Observer, Maryland based digital receiver
technology incorporated, or DRT, installed two of its DRT 1301C portable receiver systems,
so called DIRT boxes because of the acronym, on National Guard aircraft in partnership with
the Drug Enforcement Administration. Contract states these will be used in counter narcotics
operations. They were purchased using state drug asset forfeiture money, money confiscated
from people prosecuted in drug cases. This is the logo of the company making the DIRT
boxes, by the way. Lovely, huh? DIRT boxes mimic cell phone towers and they trick cell
phones within range up to three quarters of a mile, or about a third of a mile actually,
to connect with this technology. Without the cell phone user or telecom companies, cell
phone providers knowing about it. The devices can be used from air or on land, can intercept
a user's location, phone numbers dialed, text messages received, photos, and as well as
recording and listening to phone calls. The Wall Street Journal reported in 2014 that
the U.S. Marshals Service had been secretly using DIRT boxes from a small Cessna airplane
to find escaped fugitives. Equipment and training for the Marshall Service supplied by the CIA.
Justice Department was concerned that this might not be legal, so in 2015 the Justice
Department issued guidelines for federal law enforcement agencies requiring that a probable
cause warrant be issued by a judge prior to using such technology. The difference here
is that the Texas National Guard is a military organization reporting to the governor of
Texas, and it is unclear under what legal authority the Texas National Guard can conduct
electronic eavesdropping. And if we think the Texas National Guard is the only government
agency using technology like this to listen to our phone calls, monitor our text messages,
and pull phone or images, pictures off of our phones, then we're just naive. We're living
in a post-privacy era. Topic number two, war drums in the Middle East. On Sunday, Iran's
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hameini ordered a significant reshuffle of high commands of
both the army and the navy in Iran. This reshuffle occurs at a time when tensions between Iran
on the one side and Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on the other side, in other
words, Shia versus Sunni, are at an all-time high. On Monday, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister
Adel al-Jubeir accused Iran of an act of war. This is after Houthi rebels in Yemen, backed
by Iran, fired a missile at the airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia's capital city.
Meanwhile, Israel has kicked off its largest international aerial training exercise ever.
This began yesterday, Monday. It's called Blue Flag 2017. Air forces from nine countries
with about 50 planes are drilling in the southern part of Israel. That's over the Negev desert.
Teams from India, the U.S., Great Britain, no, excuse me, Greece, Poland, France, Italy,
and Germany, not Great Britain, will be flying over 300 sorties to simulate real war.
And not coincidentally, topic number one, a purge on Saturday in Saudi Arabia. This gentleman
hears prominent billionaire, a member of the Saudi royal family, and one of the biggest
shareholders in Citigroup News Corp. That's Fox News, et cetera. And Twitter, Prince Ali
bin Talal, along with 10 other senior princes and 38 ministers, were arrested for corruption
and money laundering charges. This on orders from a new anti-corruption committee in Saudi
Arabia headed up by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salton. Note the title, Crown Prince.
That means he's next in line for the throne. The royal prince's private planes have been
grounded. Their assets have been frozen. Among those fired and or arrested are the head of
the national royal guards, the minister of economy and planning, and the commander of
the Saudi naval forces. Analysts in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia point out the surprise move
by King Salman, who is in his eighties, means that the last remnants of the power base of
the previous king, Abdullah, have been purged. In other words, rivals to Salman's favorite
son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, have been neutralized. Among those arrested, Wali
al-Ibrahim, chairman of the Middle East Broadcasting Center, one of the largest media companies
in the Middle East, Bakr bin Laden, of the bin Laden group. No one, by the way, no one
seems to know the whereabouts of the previous Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's predecessor
Mohammed bin Naif. He hasn't been seen publicly since June and is rumored to be under house
arrest. Now, one of the consequences of this may be an influx of cash into Saudi Arabia's
treasury, which it can use. The net worth of some of these men arrested totals up to
about $33 billion. The Saudis' foreign reserves, by the way, shrunk by about $250 billion over
the last three years because of the declining price of natural gas. But the main takeaway
from all of this is a shift from family rule, according to analysts, a rule by consensus
of the House of Saud, to a more authoritarian style of government reporting to one man and
that one man is Mohammed bin Salman. Bruce Riedel, a 30-year CIA veteran and director
of the Brookings Intelligence Project, describes the mass arrests on Saturday as unprecedented.
And he added that there will be much discontent behind the scenes in the royal family, and
the kingdom is headed for instability. You see, the men who've been arrested control
a lot of money. They may not be able to get their hands on it right now, but they will
probably try to make promises if they can be restored to power. In other words, they're
not going to go down without a fight. Now, note, too, that Mohammed bin Salman has been
pushing a more muscular foreign policy for Saudi Arabia over the last year, as evidenced
by the Saudis' involvement in Yemen's civil war and the accusation toward Iran of an act
of war after that missile launched at Riyadh on Saturday. This is something we'll be watching
