The powers of Cape Breton style fiddle music with piano accompaniment and tonight Jennifer will be playing the fiddle
and Mike McMoron will be accompanying her on the piano.
And we'll have some dancing and some information and some storytelling maybe or whatever as the night goes on.
And if you have a talent you can speak with either Jennifer or Mike and share that talent after the break.
I know there's one lady here with a talent. She was here last night.
So she'll probably come up with a place of tunes with these guys as well.
Anyway, that's it. It's a Kayleigh and it's very relaxed.
We'll get to know you and find out where you're from and we'll have tea and all the things that go together to make the Kayleigh.
So we'll just start with some tunes.
Thank you.
And anyways, as Nancy said, I'm Jennifer Bowen and this is Mike McMoron.
And this is going to be an evening of traditional Cape Breton Scottish fiddle and piano music.
Is this anybody's first Kayleigh?
Oh, are we more than a handful? Right on. Well, you've learned to first Kayleigh before already.
And the big full green letters there that say Kayleigh, it's not sea lid.
H-race and D-silence and there's so many things in Kayleigh's languages.
Anyway, so that's Kayleigh.
Which literally just means a visitor gathering.
So none of us would parry for a while.
So it's very laid back atmosphere. Like she said, raise your hands and have any questions.
Other than that, we'll just keep the tunes coming.
That was a traditional jigs in A.
Oh, this is a community of the Great Canadian Kinay.
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh thank you.
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh
Yeah
It's a normal tradition, right?
So I learned by sitting down with someone and or going to the dance and just listening.
You know, being all ears on the light and trying to memorize everything in here and
comment to yourself on my own to try to, you know, get it, get home and scratch away the fiddle and try to make sure you got it.
And that's how you learn.
So there's not a lot of verbal exchange here.
As far as, you know, ask the person, you know, when they just played a 50 tunes in a set, what was all of them?
You know, like, it's not very efficient.
You just pick them up and if you catch the name later, then you catch it.
I'm supposed to, see, my job is to follow.
She's the boss.
So if I'm off time, to be honest with you, you asked a lot of the older fiddlers on young, some of the younger generation, they're a little more aware.
But a lot of the older fiddlers, they wouldn't know if the piano player was playing the right chords or notes, but they know if they were off time.
Because this music is all about timing. It's about, you know, dancing and all that.
So if you have bad timing, you're hooched. You don't have your own.
So that's the most important thing. If anybody asks me about my job, it's to accompany it to be in time.
In time is a huge thing.
So if I was at a time, if I played a bunch of wrong chords, I'm sure you could deal with that.
But if I was speeding you up or slowing you down, I'd be in trouble.
