Without you

Without you
Without you
I noticed my neighbour going out to the house every Sunday morning, about half past nine,
and I stopped in the other day and said where do you go this time of the morning on a Sunday
and he said I go to Taekwondo and I didn't know where it was, so I inquired about it
and he said if you want to come along with me, you can have a look and I went along and
I was a young instructor there, Mr Phil Burley, who's still my instructor now, and I watched
and I thought yeah, this guy's attitude is really good, so I thought I'd give it a try,
I haven't looked back since that Sunday morning, many years ago.
Come across the pad this way, leg comes up, drop it here on the pad, now don't see this,
keep your guard tight, leg comes up, knee is covered, the elbow up, go in the middle.
It's a mixture of martial arts anyway Taekwondo, it's a melting pot of different styles, renowned
around the world for his kicking ability and Taekwondo itself in most competitions comes
out on top for his kicking ability.
As beginner students, it's all to do with balance, coordination, timing, because Taekwondo
is all about kicking, so you've got to take one leg off the floor to kick.
Martial arts is renowned for defensive work, but if you can't balance and you can't judge
a punch or a kick, it's not very useful to you.
You've got to be able to judge the distances, that's what it's all about.
In the everyday joe, with your training, after a certain amount of time, you react quicker,
you think quicker and it enables you to move without thinking about it.
After a few months training, your reaction time has doubled compared to the person that's
in the street, so if someone throws a weapon or something at you, you can get it the way.
So many people come and go and only the good ones stay because they get dedicated to the
actual art that they're learning and that's when they flourish.
You've got to enjoy what you're actually doing.
If it's a chore, it's no good.
You've got to be able to enjoy it with the experience.
You go to other classes, other instructors and just get that fired feeling back up again
and that's what keeps me going.
It's an achievement for me to get some of the punch tidy.
It's an achievement for me to get the children coming in because they've been bullied in schools
and build their confidence.
It's down to teaching people to protect themselves.
That's my passion, is teaching people to progress and get better than they are now.
That's my passion, is teaching people to progress and get better than they are now.
That's my passion, is teaching people to progress and get better than they are now.
