The tapering is everything. It's the most important thing there is.
The fine rod is a rod that you can love. You can't wait to take it out of the case and use it again.
You've really accomplished something when you make a rod that is the one someone wants to reach for before all of us others.
It is a beautiful and streamlined, efficient animal. I just get overwhelmed with how strong and fast these fish can be.
It's a privilege when you hook one just to touch, see, hold it because it's a rare occasion.
You probably wouldn't have a chance any other way. It takes a rod that is just as strong and has those qualities to stand up to it.
Not only to reach the fish, because you're not going to hook a fish if you don't reach them,
and then to actually engage in what follows. They call it the fight.
I wish there were better words than that, but it's a beautiful thing to see a fish in its own element, which is why we don't like hurting them when we do catch them.
We're rod makers in a broad sense, and we've never indulged ourselves in going offshore and having anything made outside our own shop, our own country.
And we're very proud of that. We've got people who have been here 16, 20 years or more, and they take special people to do it.
Not everybody can come here to work. They wouldn't qualify. Those who do are still here after all those years.
Getting up to go to Thomas and Thomas wasn't so much like going to work as it is like being a child who's allowed to go and play in the toy box again.
