Hi, I'm Rachel Whitaker, sportswriter at the Lake Charles American Press, coming to you
today from John Jay Mim's stadium, where St. Louis knocked off Washington Marriott last night.
St. Louis jumped out to a 24-0 lead against Washington Marriott, but the charging Indians
stormed back in the second half behind three touchdowns from Barb transfer Melvin Jones.
But it wasn't quite enough as St. Louis ultimately won the game 31-21.
Washington Marriott now still hasn't won a district game in three years, a span of 13 straight tries.
Both St. Louis and Washington Marriott now stand at 3-3 in district 4-4-A.
In class 5A action, Barb took to the road to take on defending state champion
Acadiana. And Ken and Fontenot was added again, I mean in ridiculous fashion, passing for 391 yards,
adding to his 500-yard total from last week against St. Thomas Moore. And he had help on the receiving
end, too, from Trey Quinn and Courtney Gallantine, who both surpassed the 100-yard mark in receiving.
And it was enough for Barb this time as they knocked off Acadiana 44-21.
Back on Thursday night, Elton extended its season-winning streak to six games as they
now stand atop District 5-1A at 6-0, knocking off Maryville in convincing fashion 36-6.
Running back Michael Levin again propelled the Indians offense with more than 200 yards and
four of five Elton touchdowns. Lake Arthur, though, could not keep its unbeaten streak alive Friday
night as it fell by one point, 20-19 against DeQuincy. DeQuincy running back Patrick Deeds has
really come out of the woodwork the past few weeks as he rushed for an even 200 yards on Friday night.
He could really be a good compliment to DeQuincy quarterback Jaleel Bridges as the season progresses
and the Tigers have now won four straight. The DeQuincy Tigers, that is. And for Lake Arthur,
running back Trent Hargrave rushed for more than 200 yards yet again and three touchdowns,
but it wasn't enough this time around as Lake Arthur is now 5-1.
The game I covered Friday night was between South Beauregard and Westlake.
It was South Beauregard's very first district game as a member of Class 3A and Westlake
really brought it on their home turf. Running back Devin Eaglin rushed for 211 yards and
three touchdowns as the Rams beat the Knights 37-6. South Beauregard head coach Sean de Merritt
told me after the game that Westlake was just simply the better team Friday night.
The Rams limited the South Beauregard running game to just 72 yards rushing,
really bottling up their tandem of Joe Lede and Silas Whaley almost all night.
12 of those 72 rushing yards came on a touchdown run from quarterback Zach Brady.
The ensuing extra point attempt was blocked leaving the halftime score at 24-6.
The Knights had a chance to put a dent in Westlake's lead
in the second half as they ate up the first six minutes of the third quarter
but came away empty as Brady's pass on 4th and 21 fell 5 yards short giving the ball back to Westlake
and setting the tone for the rest of the game. The Knights next take on Crowley on the road.
And Crowley came to Iowa Friday night armed with its biggest offensive weapon in running
back Devonte Burke. Earlier in the week Iowa head coach Sean Richard told me that the defense's
number one objective Friday night was to stop Devonte Burke but he still seemingly ran almost
at will through the IOA defense propelling the gents to a 54-30 victory. And now here's a look
at the rest of Friday night's results.
Two teams in Southwest Louisiana are still looking for their first win of the season,
Iota and Hamilton. Iota has come close recently, particularly a couple of weeks ago,
when they lost to Oberlin by just four points, 18-14. Iota running back Thomas Morrell
has been helping his team's cause, rushing for more than 100 yards the past few weeks,
but it just hasn't been quite enough to propel the Bulldogs and new head coach Neil Leje
to their first win of the year. And for Hamilton, they lost 22-7 last night at Bazille. They may
have found a solution at running back with Denzel Winfrey who rushed for 103 yards on 25 carries
and the Warriors' lone touchdown. But the Warriors' schedule does not get any easier under new head
coach Sam Pratt as they host Elton next Friday. Remember to tune in next week on AmericanPress.com
for a preview of week seven and as always pick up an American Press print edition daily for a look
at scores, features, highlights, and analysis from high school, college, and professional sports.
For now, from John Jay Memm Stadium, I'm Rachel Whitaker.
