for what I do, it's kind of easier for me to draw letters when I think of them less
like letters and more like shapes
because I think hand lettering you can, you don't have to follow the rules as exactly as
someone who is building a tight face
because they need to know the ins and outs of each letter
how it should interact with the baseline
whereas letters, the more kind of sloppy it is
oh it adds character
so it's kind of hard for me to think of it so technically
because I do think I work more like an illustrator in that way
I went to Tyler's School of Art
and when I was starting my design projects
I felt like I couldn't really do the really slick design
so when I started incorporating illustration into my projects
they came more naturally
I would do a sketch for a logo or something
and they're like just draw it just like this
like that's the logo
don't try and find a free font that's gonna not look good with it
and I was like okay, I guess I can do that
and it started to click for me
when I graduated I was thinking I would be an illustrator
but I did end up getting a job working as a designer
and didn't go totally well
because I was back kind of where I started
where I really just want to get my hands dirty again
I opened up an Etsy shop
and I was doing hand-lettered posters
and I started making these chalkboards
it was just kind of a fun thing to do outside of my design job
coming up with phrases to letter
and kind of doing a little bit of copywriting
just like two line kind of things
and it got me really excited to do this kind of stuff again
so I got an email from Chronicle Books
made me realize this could be something I do full time
and then we just decided let's move to Portland, Oregon
where it's like a freelancers haven, creative haven
and we'll really make a go of it from there
so I do think it was right around the beginning
of where lettering kind of really took off
I gather most of my inspiration
specifically type reference from vintage resources
so anything that has really nice type on it
I'll pick it up, look at it and study it
now I can remember it and when I draw it
it has my own take on it
so I'm not referencing it so directly
so I'm kind of injecting my own personality into it
every once in a while I need to be like
I'm just going to leave that just a little off
just to keep that kind of character that I like in my lettering
I continue to work with Chronicle Books
on some of my self authored projects which is really fun
I just finished a notepad called The Big Ideas Notepad
and the notepad itself is oversized
I joke about the frustrations of coming up with ideas
and how like, preliminary stage, this page is not to be judged
and at the bottom it's like violators or jerks
so kind of coming up with ideas like that
where I get to write the lettering, that's really fun
Well Fred is a screen printer
and I'm a designer, illustrator, letterer and everything
so our collaboration is pretty obvious
like, he prints what I make
and that's like kind of where our collaborations
are going to be
and that's kind of where our collaborations are going to be
and that's like kind of where our collaborations started
We met at Tyler School of Art
The feels good to get some stuff done poster
was kind of my first print that I wanted to put in my Etsy shop
when I graduated art school
and we were getting ready for this art show
Punk Rock Flea Market is what it's called in Philly
with Fred and we were printing it in his garage
in the freezing cold
Yeah, I guess it kind of all started with that one poster
Feels good to get some stuff done
