Hi, I'm Michael Ingebrecht and welcome to Top Shelf.
Today we're here at Paradise Avondale for the Auckland Derby between the Swarm and the
Admirals.
Along with the highlights we'll be showing you a behind the scenes look at what it takes
to bring you these live games every week.
But before we do that, Sam is ringside with the head coaches to get their thoughts leading
into round five.
Coach, tough couple of games last weekend, what's the message being for the boys heading
into this weekend for tonight's game?
Nothing in particular, it was just repeating on working hard on your individual things
you need to work on, what you have to improve, we identified certain areas, we need to all
as a team be better and you just have to work on this, it's a young team, there's a lot
of young kids playing in this team and it's a learning curve.
And of course you played the Swarm in the pre-season, dropped both those games, what
needs to change tonight in order to keep up with them?
I think we just have to follow our system and try to do our best and we'll see how good
we are.
Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Paradise Ice Rink here in Avondale for
our NZ IHL matchup between the Botany Swarm and the West Auckland Admirals, what's the
Crosstown rivalry, the Auckland rivalry, getting into tonight's game, expect a bit of fierce
jostling in the corners, some big hits, some great goals in tonight's game as these rivals
go toe to toe, just about ready to drop the puck here at Paradise, Avondale, as the face
off is won by Fraser Ellis, it's back to Roxbro, bit of pace hitting 40s, I mean on the inside
does well to deep, puts a backhand and Hopkinson's not able to hold it with the glove, a rebound
comes in front and Brayden Smith nearly had half a chance, he just shot it wider than
net, now onto the stick of Daigle again, Daigle trying to win this way through a couple of
players, now Atmore's got a chance going forward, he's got Casey Ball on the inside, a slap
shot wider, Perry who dives back behind his own net to scoop it up and we'll get a face
off so plenty of back and forth actions so far in this game and the pace is frenetic
at this point, twice here at Paradise, Avondale tonight and tomorrow and of course two times
at Botany later in the season so plenty of action for Auckland fans to watch as that
pass comes out in front to Oli Hay who tried to scoop it over the stick of Perry but did
well on the end as now Dylan Dixon kept his eye off the puck and intercepted Wells Ferguson,
it's come out into the middle, a lot of smart chat going on out there as Tom Tracy is not
able to win the face off, a slap shot straight into Perry's legs and covered up with a glove,
so another face off in the offensive zone for the swarm, Daigle cycling in doing well
in the zone now, Daigle with a quick shot straight into the hand of Hopkinson who's
down trying to pick it out, gets his glove on it finally and we'll get a whistle but
some nice moves there from Daigle to just move his way through the offensive zone and
get a shot away, there was plenty of bodies in front of the net, Nick Henderson, Remy
Sandoy and Matty Roxborough as the puck comes to Sandoy, now Henderson, Amarals will be
looking at Cycler's puck, quickly shot, rebound scores, now the West Auckland Amarals have
opened the scoring early on the power play, doing well to pick it up as McMaster now and
he's got a bit of time and space McMaster doing well in the zone, quick shot on Hopkinson
who saves it with the blocker, so the swarm are unable to get any real forward momentum
here on this power play, probably at any time in the offensive zone as that pass comes
straight to Heather, they can face off here for the Amarals, he wins it and it comes back
onto Jackson, Jackson with a slap shot blocked well and then a backhand comes out and front
scores out, Tracy scores as Potent as ever, Tom Tracy, he was lurking next to the side
of the net like a predator possessed, if you play as Batling now, Dixon doing well and
now here on the second hand bird coming through, he's got Contrado crashing the net, Contrado
nearly picked up easily by the swarm defenceman as Johnson now moves forward, shot straight
into the chest of Perry but he's not able to cover up, it comes back out in front and
oh there was a bit of trouble there for Rick Perry, seemed to hold the first shot but it
dropped down in front of him and players there, trying to scoop it under his pads and eventually
the refs blow the whistle, his fellow teammate comes in to pick it up, broken up now by the
Amarals, a quick shot by Hamburg, comes up high into Perry and there's a goal, scored,
sand away with the pass across and chipping into the zone and it looks like we've got
a penalty for too many men and that's on the Amarals so a poor change there from the West
Auckland Amarals gives them a too many men on the ice, penalty, pass to Casey Ball, Casey
Ball looking for an open lane, Amarals doing well, a shot comes out in front, scores, welcome
back ladies and gentlemen to Paradise Ice Rink here in Avondale, the puck dropped now
in our second period, it's two all between the West Auckland Amarals and the Botany Swarm,
Hazer Ellis with a quick shot up high into the nettings, he's got Oli Hay off to the
side of the net, looking for a pass to Andy Hamburg, just keeping it in front now, comes
out, scores off Perry, it was a weak shot that trickled just to the left side of Perry
and Dagle has Jackson at the point, the Swarm doing well to sit up and kill what they can
now, Tracy circles around now because of pass to Dagle, we pass it across to Jackson, he's
got opportunity, Jackson scores, no it's off to the side of the net, the bell rang but
there was no goal now, Dagle across to Tracy with a chance off to Jackson who redirects
that one that goes just wide, passes back to him and bell back to Tracy, Tracy the Swarm
desperately trying to clear this, now Dagle's got a bit of space through open zone, tries
to put a shot away and good defending there from the Swarm and now picked up a quick shot
down low, Henderson has it again, he chips it back in and no one's there to pick it
up except for Contrater from the Swarm, now coming forward with a bit of pace as Ferguson,
he's very quick on his skates there, Ferguson, he really gets it back hand away but he's
just side of the net, Ferguson tries to put a pass into Hamburg, does so beautifully now
on the stick of Olihei who puts a shot, their test period it comes back out in front but
he watches it all the way, covers it up and we'll get a face off so some good pressure
there from the Swarm, a few clean looks but still they're not able to get the go ahead
goal, now the players are going down left right in the centre, now Henderson gets a
pass to Alice, here's an opportunity, he's got a heart on the inside of him, Fraser
Alice he's got a bit of time and space, he shoots and scores, well Fraser Alice on the
glove side of Hopkinson and that gives the admirals the lead, Harry but he was easy
to the task now, good break up there from Tracy trying to get the puck out in front
of him, Casey Ball chasing hard back to get the puck, Tracy with a shot down low coming
in for the rebound was McMaster and not able to pick it up, Hamburg comes back the other
way just 38 seconds to find the power play, now coming back the other way is Henderson,
Henderson with a bit of pace, puts a shot straight up into the chest of Hopkinson so
we'll get a face off so good penalty killing from the admirals, coming through now is Craig,
Craig with a nice little turn there and then doing well to Waxon Wayne his way through
the offensive zone, now the Swarm and a pass comes right out in front, scoop scores and
it's Dylan Dixon for the West Auckland admirals that puck came just right out to him in the
slot and it was a quick shot right down low hard up against the ice, Hopkinson wasn't
able to get across to it quick enough and with that the admirals go ahead by two, Casey
Ball able to get that one away and puts a source of pass goes all the way down to Perry
who just gloves it and get the call so wow and looks like we're going to get a penalty
called here actually on Robin Vortonoff for spraying the goal tender, it's not something
you see often but if it does happen the referees will call it and Robin Vortonoff isn't happy
about that one, understandably so but you can't run in and spray the goal tender and
expect to get away with it, now Garrett Ferguson so quick out of the zone and he gets barreled
into the boards, that's what happens when you come out at pace you are getting absolutely
annihilated into the boards as he was, here comes Tracy, Tracy with a pass up ice, here's
Braden Smith, there's a three on one if they can get it quick enough, Braden Smith with
a shot straight on to Hopkins and the rebound comes out, McMaster not able to tuck it away
they still have it though, back to the point now, pass across to Dagle, he's got it open
space he shoots up high, Ian Wannamaker was doing well to fool the offense into thinking
he didn't have the puck, as the pass comes right across here, Tracy flicks the puck
up high, Hopkins it saves their scores, well there was a lot of traffic out in front of
the net it was a beautiful pass across from Braden Smith to Tom Tracy and then it sprawled
out in front there, now Boddy's trying to get involved and then Tracy tucks it home,
that trickles up high, it's like Tracy took a slash to the shins there but nothing of
it, now he goes in hard and he's getting tied up with, hey and now they're all going after
him, the sworn players and now we're getting a bit of blood boiling over here, Tracy's
not happy about it, it looked like it was Oli Haywell, what can you expect the youngsters
always involved in the hustles and bustles of the game and looks like he might be heading
to the penalty box, well it's not a smart thing to do when you're down by three goals
to do something like that, cleared around to Tracy just 40 seconds if to go and that
power play at penalty against Oli Hay, now Tracy weeding his way through and there's
a penalty so the Emeralds will get a two man advantage, five on three power play and
it's Michael Atwell for slashing, Henderson now, quick pass across to Dagle, Dagle back
to Henderson, good play between them, now Tracy a pass out in front, scores, well that
is pin point power play passing from the West Auckland Emeralds, now circling around,
a bit of miscommunication there from the Emeralds, as Contrado picks up he's got a man right
out in front of him, here's Hamburg, he shoots, Perry saves but boy that was worrying for
the Emeralds, good penalty killing from the swarm there with just 45 seconds left to play
in this third period, Dagle across to Jackson who puts a pass up ice to Tracy, now dropping
it back to Brandon Smith, he's got an opportunity, Brandon Smith shoots and scores, Smith was
able to top that one up with a beautiful shot, block a side of Michael Hopkinson, the Emeralds
go ahead seven goals to two, so this should pretty much wrap it up for the night, unless
the swarm can get his goal off this face off but the Emeralds will take the win, no doubt
about it, as that pack spoils out, the buzzer goes and the Emeralds win the first game of
the weekend, seven goals to two, their third win in a row, a comprehensive victory, good
game tonight, Tom you scored two goals yourself, how does that win feel against the Bonnie Swarm?
It's great, we haven't really got a win in regulation against the swarm in a couple
of years now, so it's great to get the mucky off the back, and you've got another game
against them tomorrow night, what's the message going to be for the boys hitting into that?
I hope we can keep the same effort we did tonight, keep putting the puck on net, we're
going to keep going right at it, I'm going right at the throat.
Good job Tom, good luck for tomorrow night.
Wes Dawkinson made it three wins in a row, as Tom Tracy continues to impress with his
lethal shot, and the Emeralds are now pushing for second place in the NZ IHL standings,
stay with us at Top Shelf, we'll be right back with more hockey from Paradise Avondale.
Welcome back to Top Shelf, now we've been following the NZ IHL across the country, bringing
you the highlights every week, but we also broadcast the games live, a lot of work goes
into this, and to tell us more we have Jez Brown, now Jez, what does SlapShop Productions
do to make this all happen?
We lag a lot of really heavy equipment all around the country every single weekend, that
is mostly what we do, wouldn't be possible without a myriad of volunteers who help us
out all around the country, doing the replays, the camera work, everything that goes into
making the production possible, mostly done by volunteers, and that's just a huge help
for us.
We're also helped out with some technical equipment, friends at LGZ Technology in Sweden, suppliers
with the USB multi-quarter which is awesome, and an instant replays, everything comes through
them, lots of the other equipment, the switches, the comms units, everything that makes us
capable of doing what we do, goes into these rolling racks, and everything goes on a plane.
Thanks Jez.
Alright, to get us into game two, here is Claire with the head coaches.
Do you have any changes in the line up for today?
Not really, we will start with the same lines, and I invited a couple of young ones again,
other ones we are giving a chance for all our young players, we got quite a few young
players coming up.
Quite happy with the performance of most of the boys, second and third line, many of the
young boys, all the under 20 players who played yesterday, I think they did pretty well, so
five on five, they were still minus one, but I think they challenged themselves and they
tried pretty well against many of the West Auckland guys, so overall I'm actually quite
happy with the performance, even though the score doesn't reflect it.
Good afternoon, welcome to Paradise Evendale, where we're seeing the second meeting this
weekend between the West Auckland admirals and the Botany Swarm, skates it in, manages
to just avoid most of the hit from Ecclese there, and Andy Haye didn't quite get enough
on that one for the shot, Oli Haye there with moves, and that one's goal, Andrew Haye in
front of the net there, and I think that may actually be his fourth goal for the season,
which is his highest goal total in his career there for the NZ IHL, so back up to the point
where Dago can't quite keep it in, and Ball is just a stepping head of him there with
the puck, passing over to Hamburg, who just gets it, and goal!
Perry didn't quite have that one, and it looks like it was picked up just in front of his
crease, so it looked like Oli Haye there with the goal to put the swarm out to a two-goal
lead, couldn't quite get the shot away, want to make it with the shot, stopped there by
Perry, back to Ferguson, and goal!
Kyle Johnson for the swarm there with that one, managed to pick up the rebound off Ferguson's
shot, and taps it straight into the open net behind Perry, picked up by McMaster, back
to Tracy, takes a shot, and goal!
Emeralds get back on the board now, just 30 seconds after the swarm's goal, so they'll
be quite pleased with that one, to Boniface, puts that hit through the neutral zone, to
Debole, back to Atwell, over the blue line, back to Debole, takes a shot, and Perry,
GOAL!
Aaron Henderson racing to the net there, picks up that rebound, throws it behind Perry, score
that we have there, head to the Dunedin Thunder leading 1-0 over the Canterbury Red Devils
in Dunedin, and GOAL!
Great pick up there by Tracy again to put the Admors up to their second goal, picking
the puck up off McClendon's pads as he gave up a rebound, bouncing it straight high, tops
off there, bought an off, tapped that back, Jackson will collect it for the Admors, and
shoot that ahead to Hart, who'll pass it over to Fraser Ellis, pushes that one in, and kept
just out with the hell of a bounce there, looked like McClendon managed to cover that
just in time, but we had a wee bit of what was almost one of those gravity type goals,
so we managed to get a line change in now, and that's turned over to Michael Atwell who
bounced it back, collected nicely in front of it by Aaron Henderson, back to Boniface
in the slot, and good save there from Perry with a lot of traffic in front of him, Admors
coming out with the puck now, turned it over at their blue line, Aaron Henderson forcing
that turnover, and Miles Debole there collecting the puck along the boards, back to Boniface
who takes a shot in, and that bounces off, looks like it bounced off the equipment of
Perry, puck picked up by Casey Boer there out of a mess of people, and looked like that
one bounced in, see if that one is a good goal, coming on behind the net, and bit of
a collision there along the boards between Andy Haye and the ref, everyone trying to
get up, Tracy comes out of that with the puck going in, off McClendon, and right off
of the top corner it's a goal for the Admors from Tom Tracy, that's a hat trick, and Boer
is crossing the blue line now, he's got Johnson behind him with the back check, turned over
to Fraser Ellis, he's got Oli Haye on him, McLeish coming out with the puck now over
to Hart, picked up by Casey Boer along the boards, takes a bit of a crunch and hit there,
throws it in towards the net but ably defended there by Andy Hart, and just beside the net
everyone's trying to come out with possession there, kept him by Hamburg, and Fraser Ellis
now chasing that puck, Ferguson pushes it over and then on to Andy Hart stick, Nick
Henderson there, and good save by Franklin Cinden, and Andrew Hamburg stands up against
Nick Henderson just after that so I didn't want to let him get a chance to get back for
another rebound, Admiral's fighting half of that puck off the face off, Smith manages
to get possession initially, forces it over the blue line, Henderson chasing him there,
and Dago with the puck there, going ahead for a short handed rush, a big hit and open
ice there by Oli Haye, picked up by Sandoy who's been a fixture on the Admors powerplay
this year since they've picked him up, he's probably more familiar to most InterDiHL
viewers in the green as he played for the Thunder for many years, but this year he is
up in Auckland with Avondale, and puck bounced off McLean in there, looks like we've got
that whistled down with a few guys in the crease, Braden Smith going hard to the net
there for the Admors, and Casey Ball trying to keep him clear of the goalie, good defence
there for more to make it to get the puck back into swarm possession, Devall skating
in over the blue line, takes a shot, comes off the pad, the Admors goalie and have a
whistle there, Casey Ball will tap that head into the Admors zone with McLeish pursuing
it along the boards, picks it up on the dasher, back over to Sandoy, picked up there by Ball
and straight into the pads of, and goal! Casey Ball picks up the second rebound there,
first one went straight into the pads, but that is a goal for the bot next wall from
Casey Ball, the second of the game, skates over the blue line, gets that well back behind
the net where it is picked up by Deagle, bounces over Henderson's stick back to McLeish, and
then nearly fielded well by Andy Hay there, forced the head onto the stick of Aaron Henderson,
but it looks like we are going to get a penalty for Inter here, it's DeVall there who very
much got in the way of Andy Hay that it looks like, and we've got a bit of pushing and
shoving after the whistle there too, didn't quite see how that started, but it looks like
it came in to defend Aaron Henderson, back checked there by Casey Ball, Deagle will pick
up the puck along the boards, Ball will pick it up, get into the zone onside and pulled
down by Deagle there, bit of protest in the crowd who wanted a call on that, but we will
just play on the whistle, Tracy breaking into the zone now with possession, comes up against
Tom Heather, Oli Hay with a big hit there and the puck is taken by Tom Heather racing
out of the zone, to Nick Henderson back to Braden Smith, to Deagle who sends that one
sideways and a good stick there from Miles DeVall to send that out of this home's zone,
a bit of a controversial hit there from Ian Watermaker on Blake Jackson, Smith coming
over to the boards to pick that up, back to Deagle at the blue line, sends that one down
and just wide, that one went just through the crease for Tracy, that was a very close
call for the admirals there, Kyle Johnson racing after that one with McMaster coming
in on his owner, had an opportunity for a little bit of a break, he'll work his way
into the slot and that is gloved down and frozen by McClendon, a little bit more hitting
at this point as things are heating up, just a few minutes left in the game, quite a lot
going on there, we've had a sort of stop play so we'll see if anything comes of that, about
three different hits there right in front of the scorer's block, so I'd say that the
refs had a very good view of everything going on there, Heather battling for that one and
then picked up and fished out by Tracy who will get a short handed rush, Michael Atwell
there and looks like Tracy's gone into McClendon there, Tracy has all three of the goals today
so far for the West Auckland admirals and is one of their most accurate and dangerous
shooters so probably not the guy you want to see this happening for if you're on the
swim side and exactly what you'd like to have happening from the admiral side, so he works
his way into the zone, takes it from the step, shoots it and goes wide, looking at his options,
looking for a shooting lane, Tracy's got a couple of guys in front of him, looking for
the gap between the pads there and picked up nicely there by the swim, Heather just
wide of the empty net as the admirals have pulled their goalie for the extra attacker,
so they are six on four at this point, shot there from Tracy and someone's stick is broken,
shot there just to finish up from the swim and that's the end of the buzzer, swam win,
six-three's the swam, so the swam and admirals have split this weekend's results, admirals
winning yesterday's game seven-two and today's game going in favour of the visitors with
the swam winning six-three. Obviously we didn't have the best effort yesterday, we just weren't
skating, we weren't putting in the effort that you need to get a win in this league,
we talked about it last night and we talked about it again before the game this morning
that we really need to step it up and from the first shift of the day boys are ready
and boys are up for this game, we wanted that W, we've been on a bit of a streak of not
getting a win so to get it today against the admirals and their own right we're really
happy with the effort today. We're really positive, we had three wins in a row coming
into this game, we probably got a little too ahead of ourselves but the way that this
team is structured this year and the way we're focused and building, it's really positive
and I think moving forward it's going to be a lot better so yeah this was kind of a step
backwards to give us five steps forward so we're pretty confident.
Down south in other NZ IHL results, the Canterbury Red Devils and Dunedin Thunder split their
series, Canterbury 1 game 1, 6-4 and Dunedin 1 game 2, 3-2. The Southern Stampede had
the buy this round and will remain atop the standings but the Red Devils are closing in
with 16 points, the admirals remain in third with 9 points. Next week is huge, we have
a grudge match, Southern Stampede vs the Canterbury Red Devils at Alpine Ice in Christchurch,
it will be a sell out so get your tickets quick or watch online with the NZ IHL season
pass. Plus the admirals will be in Dunedin to face the Thunder, for more information
visit NZIHL.com. On behalf of myself, Sam Hewitt, Mike Engelbrick and the Courrette
Slapshot Productions, thanks for watching Top Shelf, see you next week.
