Welcome back to the ADM video blog. I'm Adam Daniel Maze. Thanks again for watching August the 11th, 2017.
Let's talk a little bit about longevity.
Okay, so for those that know me very well know that I'm a very disciplined type of a guy.
I get up at a very early hour. I hit the gym at a very early hour.
I have routines that are sacrosanct that I don't like to violate that help me function.
It's one of the things that I talked about earlier today, the tripod of stability.
We'll get into some of those concepts throughout the course of this blog.
So, for example, there are places that I go to routinely where I'm known.
People know my name. People see me. People know what I'm up to.
And so it's mostly older guys, especially when you go to the gym at early hours.
Older people get up earlier. Does that say that I'm getting older because I get up earlier, but let's not go there.
People generally getting up earlier in the day are older.
So they notice me at the gym because generally when I go and work out, I work out pretty hard,
especially when I'm hitting the bags. There's a lot of noise,
whether it's my fists that are hitting the bag or the bag actually rocking
or some of the breathing and granting that I do when I go into some pretty intense combinations.
So older guys are generally coming up to me in the locker room
and they're saying, hey, did you use to box before? Are you a ring guy?
What's your deal? Why are you boxing so hard? Are you training for something?
It's always nice when those guys end up giving you a compliment
because you know that we're all part of the same tribe.
We're all interested in maintaining our health.
We're all interested in being top shape.
We're all interested in sustaining our life and being here for a very long time.
And so part of the reason why I work out so hard is because one of my missions is
I want to be around till 100. We have a little joke in this leads into the second part,
which is there's some cafes that I go to as well where some of the guys that are there know me.
And most of the older guys that I know that are over 60, they generally,
and people like my father, for example, who's 73 years old,
and who doesn't look a day over 55,
these are the type of guys that we all want to be around for a long time, myself included.
And we always have a little joke and we say the types of things that we need to do
to make sure that we can stick around for as long as we do.
The gym I already mentioned is one component.
And for me personally, it's the things that I put into my body, the stuff that I eat,
and I'm very conscious of the stuff that I put in there.
So I'm not a smoker. I don't do drugs.
I like to drink every now and again. I like to have a couple beers.
So that's kind of like one of my sort of like my little guilty pleasures,
but I do it like once a week and I make sure that it's in moderation.
And I generally do it with an activity.
So it's not just like me sitting there and like having drinks or like going crazy.
Like I like to watch the game. Obviously people know I'm wild for baseball.
So it's a baseball connection or if it's going out with somebody and having a really good conversation.
So some beers, but that's very sort of like sparing type of activity.
Also the things that go into your head, the knowledge, the books that you read,
it's very important to be careful what you're thinking about,
how you're thinking about affects very profoundly the opportunities that you pursue
and how you conduct your day and how you associate with other people in the space.
And I'm very conscious about the books that I read and I'm still conscious of reading a book a week,
which is like one of the goals that I've had.
And I mentioned this before in videos in the past and real books with real thoughts,
with sustained thoughts, cogent thoughts that you can read a book over the course of let's say,
however long it takes you to read a book, whether it's a thick one or it's a thin one,
you need a single idea that's contained within the course of several pages,
not just little sort of like snippets of information that you gobble like snacks.
You need a meal, not a snack.
And it's also like, you know, the types of people that you associate with,
and I talked about this before on this blog in previous iterations,
what's your five person average, the five people that you spend the most time with.
They could be real people, they could be virtual people, they could be authors,
but only five people that you want your five person average to be very high
to contribute to your overall life success and satisfaction.
It's very important for me to have longevity.
I want to be around for a very long time.
I see, especially as my parents get older, especially a person like my father,
and I'm watching him and I see how he conducts himself and I see the attitude that he has,
the equanimity, the patience, the calm, the perspective, the analysis, the pure way of a situation,
how he's able to look at a situation and how he's able to size things up and assess.
It's not about ego.
I mean, obviously there's a little bit of ego where humans ultimately,
but it's a little, you know, it's not about ego.
It's not about like prestige.
It's not about something silly.
It's not something about as fleeting and as a transitory as that.
It's about just kind of like putting everything out on the table,
having a grand survey of the situation and basically laying things out in a sequential fashion
so as not to be overwhelmed by the different screwballs that life throws at you.
These are things that you do in order to increase your longevity
and the vitamins that you take and the foods that you eat
and when you eat and the portions that you eat.
You know, the thing that ages you the quickest is stuffing your belly with food
and sitting on a couch or sitting on a chair
and just like needing an x-lax or whatever the product du jour is,
you know, like needing some kind of a pill to like,
some Pepto-Bismol or whatever it is to quell your digestive system.
These are very important things and as I get older,
I think about them very frequently and they're on my mind pretty persistently.
I want to be around, like we always say that joke,
I want to be around until I'm 100 plus.
And it's very important to associate with people in your life either on the personal
or the intimate that are very aware of a similar type of a situation
that don't throw their bodies to oblivion.
Little things that crop up in my thoughts as I think about these various notions
and I remember things that were told to me by some very important people in my life.
For example, my friend Ian Kath down in Brisbane in Australia,
Ian gave me this great little sort of trick, you know,
like anybody who's a smoker or who does drugs, delete, delete key, gone.
It doesn't matter if you're nice, it doesn't matter if you're fantastic.
I don't want to be with anybody who's a smoker and the reason that Ian cited,
which I cite as well, is I don't want to have to look after you when you get sick
because you're going to get sick because those fucking things that you smoke
are pure poison, they're pure death sticks.
So I'm not going to be there to take care of you when you abuse yourself
and you can see some of the people that I know in my life that I knew when I was in university
and that are persistent smokers and you associate with them and they're coughing
and they're spitting up this black green shit and they can't run
and they can't do this and they can't do that.
So everything has a price.
Pretty much for the last half decade of my life, it's about longevity
and wanting to be here for a very long time
and also having a spiritual approach as well
and I don't want to get too much into religion or religiosity
but having a spiritual approach and realizing that that's an energy as well
that exists in the world that impinges very profoundly upon
how you conduct your day to day
and understanding that it's not just you going about your space like a bull
it's also about the things that balance that sort of corporeal
existence, protein form, carbon form, me, me, me, the id, as it were.
So these are the things, just to repeat again, longevity
what you eat and drink, what you think about and what you read
the people that you associate with having a spiritual approach
and then watching older people and literally being inspired by them
and it's such a compliment, again, just to conclude
it's such a compliment when the older guys come up to you
like they did to meet this morning at the gym
and they just come up to you and they poke you on the shoulder and they say
you know, I look at you and I'm very inspired
I just sit here and it makes me want to come into the gym more often
and to work harder because I see how you work out
because I see how you approach the physical
I see that you are dogged about wanting to be precise, technically correct
you know, not just there like hoof weights, like some mead head, like some juice pig
no, you want to come in and you want to do everything to the letter
and then they give you a compliment and then they go off
and it's just like I could receive no bigger compliment
than from a mature individual, man or woman, who tells you that you during the right thing
that's a huge compliment and that means that I'm on the right path
and that's why I continue to do what I do
so thanks again for watching, have a great weekend
again, I'm experimenting back with these video blogs again
for those that have known me for many years
I used to do these things pretty regularly
2010, 11, 12 and 13, I think I stopped in 14
I've been josing to get back in front of the camera again and now I'm having an opportunity to do so
and again, just to make a quick statement, I don't know if anybody was following
but I was debating whether I'm going to go with the tripod format, sit down on my ass
or whether I'll kind of like take different locations in the city
and just walk around Gonzo style with my cell phone
and just record and I thought that this ladder technique would actually be more effective
on account of the fact that I think better on my feet and I like to walk around
plus it gives you a chance to see what's going on behind my back
when I'm doing these various things
so thanks again for watching, have a great weekend
I think I'll take the weekend off and I'll come back again on Monday
with another idea that I'm already cooking in my head
be well, longevity, that's what it's about
take care folks, see you!
