It is with great pleasure for me to undertake, as my last duty as Mayor, the investment of
Mr. Cedric Robinson, MBE, as an honorary Freeman of the City of Lancaster. At the meeting of
Council on the 16th April 2014, the admittance of Mr. Cedric Robinson, MBE, as an honorary
Freeman of the City of Lancaster was given unanimous support by members of this Council.
The Queen's Guide to the Sands is a royally pointy guide to assist the safe crossing of the
Sands of Macon Bay. Cedric was appointed the first in 1963, the 25th person to be so appointed to
the role and guides have been appointed royally since 1536. Born in Fluteborough and coming from a
family of fishermen, Cedric spent much time coddle picking with his father in the Bay and there
began a love of the Sands and a commitment to guiding people safely across the Bay which has
lasted a lifetime. Cedric reads the Sands, as we may read in newspaper, and from his home in
Granger of the Sands he constantly watches the Bay and always marks the route he chooses with
Laurel branches as they can stay on the Sands for up to two weeks. Cedric's experience of life on
the Sands has undoubtedly been helped by his career as a fisherman. Although he no longer
commercially fishes the Bay, he still sets nets and uses them to educate children about fishing.
Throughout the years Cedric has given many famous people the experience of safely walking
across the treacherous Sands of the Bay, thus raising the profile of our district and providing a
huge boost for green tourism. During his time as Queen's guide Cedric has guided thousands of
people safely across the Bay and in doing so he has also helped to raise huge amounts of money
for charity. He has less than exists of hundreds and thousands of people across the Bay and despite
now being over 80 years old he has no plans to retire from a job which continues to give him
so much pleasure and many other people. Thank you. I now call on the Chief Executive.
Would Mr. Cedric Robinson, MBE please step forward to take the oath for free citizen.

her heirs and successors, kings and queens of this realm, that you will pay due obedience to the

duly when required be contributory to all duties, Scott, Lott and other charges within this city

city in town or franchises thereof. You shall keep the Queen's peace in your own person,
you shall know of no unlawful assemblies, meetings or conspiracies within the jurisdiction of this
city and town, but you shall inform the mayor thereof and oppose them to the utmost of your

Just bear with me a second.
Isn't this exciting? Firstly, I would like to thank the Worship Pope Mayor of Lancaster,
Councilor June Ashworth, who very kindly put my name forward to your Council for the
award of Henry Freeman of the City of Lancaster, in recognition of my role as Queen's guide to
the Sands of Morkan Bay for over 50 years, and to all and every one of you who put plans in
motion to give me this wonderful accolade and to make this a special and memorable occasion. Also,
by giving me the opportunity to invite my family and friends to witness the admission and to join
us for lunch as part of the celebrations of the day. Thank you.
Hi Sheriff, Councillors, ladies and gentlemen, honoured guests. Please welcome the Mayor of Lancaster,
Councilor Susie Charles.
