She is still my home
She is still my home
She is still my home
Matthew Farley spent more than 40 years in the teaching profession
Shaping the minds of many Barbadian youths
His career was the fulfillment of a childhood dream
That was born on his first day of school
My mother tells me that after attending school
The first day at age five
When he came home and she lifted me up and said
How was your day?
I said my day was fine
I said to her I wanted to be headmaster
Who was the headmaster at that time?
I was five years old she said
So if she said so, that's mostly true
So ever since then
My life avenues have led me
And I became a teacher
At any point did you ever want to be something else?
Absolutely not
I finished school in 1973
July and of course there were opportunities to enter teaching
And I went into the classroom in September 1973
The 10th to be exact
Having gone through the pre-artisan program at the time
But it wasn't pre-artisan
It would have been induction course, six weeks induction course
Which would give you initiation into the profession
And now for the four years or hence
And looking back on a career that I really enjoyed
It was a rewarding career that the retired principal looks back on with pride
We spent 1996 to 2003, 7 years at the Samiris Primary School
And that was a high point in the sense that Samiris was in a city school
Or isn't in a city school
We had our own challenges
But the high point of that was that
Samiris was a project for Edutette
Which was funded by the AADB
Some 396 million dollars
And the school was chosen to be the project
And it was the principal
So that was the precursor to Edutette
That was pretty much a pilot project that was supposed to inform
And also help the government secure the funding
So that was a high point
So my school was the leader
We had a steady outcome through the lab
We had technology in the classroom
Technology became part of management
It was really a high point in my career
And as all his students were quick to discover
He was also a firm believer in discipline
Students admire teachers
And leaders who are firm
Who are guided by clear principles
We might come over a bit strict
But it is that type of teacher
It is that type of profile that students love most
And remember longest
The teacher who is very liberal
And allows anything to happen in the classroom
Is not the one that will get the recognition
And the attention of students
So I had an ex-relationship with my kids
Both at the primary level
Especially at the Garasano Green City
We had a wonderful relationship
They knew what it stood for
And they didn't complete
They knew what happened
My relationship also extended to
The basketball court, the netball court
Wherever they were playing
I was there, any finals
Basketball, netball
I was there, they said
But sir, may you come and play better
So I was there and I was the chief
I was the chief cheerleader
At every final
And that was the way to say
I am with you
Fali says teachers have a tremendous responsibility
To themselves and their students
I have always had a passion
For the teaching profession
I believe is one of the most
If not the most important profession
That is in the world
In that we teach everybody else
Everybody else
I mean you may live for a whole
For a whole life
Then you never go to a doctor
You may live for a whole life
Then you never see a lawyer
You have to encounter the
On the digger at the end
But you know
You can't get away
If I haven't been impacted by a teacher
At some point in ten years life
And I was drawn attention to the need
For them to recognize the tremendous responsibility
That rests on their shoulders as teachers
But in this age when there are so many issues
When there are so many challenges facing young people
Sometimes the school is the only
The place where there is the last
Best is of all
Sometimes children come to school
Early because
Not because they want to be punctual
Because home is not safe place
Sometimes they last leave the school
Not because they like school
But because home is not safe place
So school is that last best
Is of all for a lot of children
I think I try to convey that impression to them
That we need to overwork very high standards
And that as teachers we cannot be like everybody else
If you want to lead students and children
Into a better way of life
Parley is also a family man
A newspaper columnist
And a radio announcer
We have many attacks to micromanic schools
I want to say very clearly
And very even tune
That the roles of both the minister
And the roles of principals are very clear
While the minister has oversight
For the system
The day-to-day running of our schools
Is that the principals
Who I must act
Must be guided by the education actors
And the regulations
And by what is reasonable
Given any set of circumstances
It is very difficult to describe
What action is being taken
In every circumstance
As we manage the school
In terms of the recent
On-forshake comments
Of children with jobs
I want to say firstly
I have had to say
Who are students between 9 and 3
On previous occasions
In relation to press calls and infractions
In some instances
The parent is conducted
The parent cannot perform
But if this is a situation
Where we have to take action
Since it has implications
For the overall discipline
In the school
So once anyone starts between 9 and 3
Is not the normal response
There are situations
Which may narrative
And principals, therefore,
Have to act accordingly
I think the minister is sorely mistaken
When he draws a distinction
Between dress court issues
And behavioral issues
There are sides of the same coin
Students who blatantly plot
Dress court rules
Are enriched on the court address
And by extension
Are committed acts of defiance
That impact adversity
On the epochs of the school
Such acts
Can seriously complies
Of the school
And therefore
Are acts of misbehavior
I want to conclude
By just giving three questions
For those whom we want
To answer upon the amendment
What is the message
Which our dear minister
Which is to send
The students across our system
Is it one of defiance
Or is it one of complies
Secondly
What is the message
Which is intended for parents
The majority of whom
Are interested in order
And discipline
And circumstances in our schools
And thirdly
As we seek to bring order to our schools
What is the message
That is being sent to the populace
And the country
Out of the world
At the time of some dislocation
And the discipline
In our country
Schools must be raised to the table
And it was act of reason
That represented
Each of our teachers
Each of our principals
And each of our country
Out of the world
What is the message
Which our dear minister
Which is intended for parents
The majority of whom
Are interested in order
And discipline
And circumstances in our schools
And thirdly
As we seek to bring order to our schools
What is the message
Which our dear minister
Which is intended for parents
The majority of whom
Are interested in order
And discipline
