..on the Cthedral Close, and that was the Carousel, which is a wonderful...
..I mean, just memories of Mary Poppins, and just...
..it's a wonderful ride to go on.
Yes, we used to watch them setting it up and taking it down.
I mean, there's so much to watch. Yes, it was lovely.
Great fun for children. I'm glad it still goes on.
The close lent itself perfectly to these kind of events...
..because you'd got your nice islands of grass...
..and then you'd got your pathways to walk through as well.
And by this time, the chains that used to be on the grass areas...
..on the close had gone.
When I first came here, I don't think they still do it.
When Maurice Dances used to come on Boxing Day...
..I used to enjoy the music and see them. Always came down to see them.
The Goose Fair was held in 1982...
..in celebration of 700 years of St Thomas Cantaloupe of Hereford.
It was a whole year-long extravaganza of various events...
..commonating in this enormous festival of a goose fair in the close...
..where 15,000 people came to celebrate St Thomas of Hereford.
There were the choristers singing and then there was the Hereford Bull...
..and then in the end they had to carry the geese.
We went all down Church Street and round up Broad Street...
..and that was the opening.
We had wonderful weather on the day.
The bishop went out in his robes...
..to meet the pilgrims who were led by a Hereford Bull...
..and the goose girl with the geese coming in...
..the medieval goose fair.
A goose girl was Samantha Hallowell.
She was a 14-year-old pupil at the Cathedral School.
We carried the money away in wheelbarrows, garden wheelbarrows...
..and it took us until Tuesday to count all the coinage.
3 of us were playing football in one of the closters...
..and the ball unfortunately damaged quite badly...
..a priceless stained glass window.
We wouldn't admit to it initially...
..but of course we were found out and I was expelled.
My parents went to see...
..surpersonally, but we were found out...
..and I was expelled.
My parents went to see Saperce Hull...
..and explained that they would punish me...
..and he said, well, I will punish him as well.
I was reinstated as head boy.
I didn't get the bicycle, I've been promised for my birthday...
..and Saperce gave me six or eight of the best...
..so I had a very sore bottom for some days...
..to remind me not to play football...
..where there is stained glass windows.
You live and learn.
The close meant everything to our school boys...
..because we could nip across.
We had a lovely English master who enjoyed gin...
..so he would take us across close to the spread eagle...
..for a quiet one.
Particularly pleasurable from my point of view...
..was that the bottom of Key Street...
..was the old Hereford Art College.
We could see the very attractive students coming out...
..and the close was quite an important place for courting.
One of the things I do remember...
..is that some of the older students borrowed the anatomy skeleton...
..and they decided to dress it up...
..and they put it in the cathedral close...
..because at that time there were benches all around the close...
..and it had great fun just watching people's reactions...
..to the skeleton.
I think there was probably some sort of placard on it...
..about being on an extreme diet or something.
I assume you don't remember.
I can remember later on having joined the school cadet force.
We marched down to the school playing fields through the close...
..behind the school band down King Street...
..and all the way down to Wythside.
And this one time we were having a major parade through the close...
..and it was thought it would be rather good that we should have a mace.
So we were borrowing it from the Hereford TA...
..and it was a wonderful thing...
..and it had a great big silver knob...
..with a lovely silver lion on the top.
We had to take special care of it.
So I had been practising with the broomstick...
..and I threw it up and down and caught the broomstick every time.
So the parade came and the boys said, you will throw it.
I said, yes, I think you ought to be thrown.
So we were going through the close towards Broad Street...
..and my father's office was up there and he was with the camera...
..and I thought, well, this is the time.
So up goes the mace with the silver crown on the top there...
..and I was trying to smile to make sure I got a picture in the camera...
..but unfortunately I missed it when it came down.
So it went back with the lion slightly flattened on the top...
..and the boys cheered like mad.
