Do you guys know what a rider is when bands go somewhere and they get special requests?
Do you guys know what that is?
Yeah?
Well, come on, you should know these things.
Every band that goes somewhere, given special requests, they can get random things.
I just stole one of Jared Leto's nuts.
I did have two, but I lost it. I dropped it somewhere.
I dropped my nut.
But Brad's got one of his chips.
So we thought, does anyone want Jared Leto's nut?
Alright, who wants it the most?
Alright, Pinky, can you just pass this nut back to them?
Just pass it back. It's alright.
Whatever you do, don't eat this nut, seriously.
Yeah, it's been my hand breakers.
Who lost Jared Leto's chip?
It's actually quite a stable meal that you can share that.
There you go.
Oh, don't break it. It's a chip.
Hey, we're recording for the night show tonight.
Do you remember back in primary school that your teacher would go high class and they'd go high mess?
It's not the band that worry.
That's not them.
Hey, when we say high Epsom girls, can you guys go high Brad and Sharon?
We're recording this for the radio tonight. Can you guys do that?
Can you do that?
Alright, okay, pretend we're the teachers.
Alright, here we go.
High Epsom girls.
High Epsom girls.
Awesome.
That was good, but you've got to do it more like a teacher.
No offense, I'm sure you're all lovely.
Good afternoon Epsom girls.
Good afternoon Brad and Sharon.
You guys are good.
Alright, are we ready to get 30 seconds to Mars on stage?
Now, as you know, at the end, you guys have to stay in here at the very end for about five minutes.
But the cool thing is, in that five minutes, we're going to give away five signed 30 seconds to Mars albums.
Is anyone going to the show tonight and we're going to the Sold Out concert?
Nice, nice.
Alright, are we ready to bring the band on stage? Let's just check.
Oh, I can see Jared Lino.
Are we going over here? Are they ready?
Maybe you guys should make them feel welcome.
Okay, we want you guys on the count of three to go, what up?
Because we're all down and stuff.
We'll be like, what up? 30 seconds to Mars.
One, two, three.
Goldware Kiwis.
We are such Kiwis.
Alright, we've just got to find the band.
We'll get the questions going.
Ladies and gentlemen.
Good morning.
This is where the crazy girls are over here, right?
Or is it over here?
How's everybody doing? Are you having fun up top?
This is always better than going to class, right?
Okay.
Welcome to New Zealand, guys.
Stanley, it's a rainy day, but it's great to have you guys here.
Thanks so much.
We've got a bunch of questions today from girls from the school.
We're going to start off with Jessica Robbins.
She's actually the winner of this competition, so Jessica.
Get up there, Jessica.
Get up to the podium, Jessica.
Get up to the podium. You're up first.
We need to hear you.
My question is, how do you think your music has changed since the summer time?
Well, class.
That's a very, very, very big question.
That's a big question.
Check out your pins and paper. It's time to make some notes.
I will test you on this later.
Well, considering you were probably six years old when we made our first record.
If that.
If that. You may not have been born yet.
You know, when we made our first record, it was the year...
We were working on it in the year 2000.
Wow.
Wow.
Pretty crazy, huh?
Oh, that's great.
Yeah. But it's changed a lot.
I think the new record, which is called This Is War, is the truest record that we made in a lot of ways.
Because it's the record that really says the most about us.
And it's a very strange record, too, which says a lot about us.
Where's the guitar? Shouldn't we just play some music or something?
I guess that was the end. I don't know.
Awesome. Shall we move on to our next question?
Thank you. Thank you for your question.
Appreciate it. Make some noise for her.
Next up, we have Rebecca Yeo.
Hi, Rebecca.
Do you guys know Rebecca?
Rebecca looks very nice. Doesn't she?
You guys look very nice, too.
My question is, back in your self-titled album days,
do you think you would be surprised to see This Is War?
Yes, I would be very surprised.
I never thought in a million years we'd be standing here at the Epsom's Girl School talking to you guys.
Definitely not.
So it is a very big surprise.
This record has been a lot of fun.
We've traveled the world.
Just in the next few weeks, we're going to go to Singapore,
and Tokyo, and Budapest, and Tel Aviv, and Poland, and Vienna, and back to America.
And that's just the next two weeks.
So we get to travel a lot, and we get to come to one of the best places, New Zealand.
Thank you, Rebecca.
Can we welcome to the stage, Kate?
Thank you, Rebecca.
How did you guys come up with that idea of the Church of Mars?
The Church of Mars, she asked about.
This is a very, very intense question.
Very intense indeed.
Tell me your name again.
Tell me your name again.
Kate.
Kate?
Yeah.
Thanks for the question.
That's all.
No, just kidding.
What was the question?
Okay, Church of Mars.
Well, you know what we do at our shows sometimes?
There's a song called Kings and Queens, okay?
For those of you that know it, you've got really good taste.
But for the song Kings and Queens, when we're playing our shows,
sometimes we invite all of you people on stage to sing the song with us.
So tonight, is it tonight?
Is the show?
Wow.
Yeah, I haven't been sleeping much.
So the show tonight, we will have people that come on stage and we call it the Church of Mars.
We all get up there and everybody goes crazy and it ends up being one of the highlights of the set.
So if anybody is there tonight, I don't know if people are coming to the show,
but we can try to get you on stage for Church of Mars.
Thank you, Kate.
Up next we have Hazel Ellis.
Hazel Ellis.
Hazel.
Come on down, Hazel.
Hi, Hazel.
Hi, Hazel.
Hazel.
Hello.
My question for you guys is, I want to know what kind of people you were in high school.
Wait, one more time, please.
What kind of people you were in high school?
I was just a big nerd.
He was a nerd.
He was a bad boy.
And I didn't show up to school very much, but we won't talk about that.
But, you know, we were kind of, we were, I think, you know, we went through phases as we all do,
but maybe we shouldn't talk about this.
This is a good school, you know.
We actually went to some pretty, some rough around the edges schools, a bunch of different schools.
My brother and I went to, like, for high school, we went to, we pretty much went to a different school
every year or two of our lives.
Yeah.
But I never did go to a girl's school.
I don't know what's up with that.
Yeah, we missed that part.
Yeah.
Which I think would have been a lot of fun.
What's up with that?
I think so.
Yeah.
No boys to deal with, you know.
Anyway.
Hi, Hazel.
Thank you, Hazel.
All right.
Our next question comes from Jayden Lamb.
Come on, Jayden.
What's your name?
Jayden.
Jayden.
Jayden.
I like that name.
Yeah.
My question for you is, would you rather have a keg leg or a cook hat?
Ooh.
Good question.
That's the best question we've ever gotten.
Yeah.
That's a good question.
We're going to have to have a debate.
Okay, we've decided it's a hook hat because it's better when you're in a fight.
A keg leg can slow you down, but could be a lot of fun on the dance floor.
Exactly.
Think about it.
Think about it.
Thanks, Jayden.
Bye.
And next up, we have Bridget Liggins.
Hi.
My question for you is, what's your favorite childhood memory?
Well, what a deep question.
Very deep.
Well, I remember one day in 1835, I was wandering across a field.
Those were the days.
The field of wildflowers.
The good, favorite memory is when we were kids.
You know, I think all of us had pretty different childhoods.
We had pretty tough childhoods.
I don't know if anybody out there has had some rough spots.
But we all had pretty challenging times when we were kids.
It's nice to know that you can get through that and that you can work really hard and
that you can live your dreams, which is, you know, a message that we carry with us because
children, listen, because if you saw where we came from when we were young, you would
never think that we would be touring the world playing these shows.
You know, we didn't, nobody gave us these opportunities.
We had to work for them.
And we still work for them, and we're really grateful for that.
So I would think that the memories are getting better and better.
Exactly.
Yeah.
Thank you.
All right, Georgia, you're up.
Georgia Jordan.
Hey, guys.
Hey.
Hola.
I've got a kind of deep question.
What inspires you?
What inspires you?
Getting deep.
I mean, everything inspires us, right?
It's not just music or movies or books.
It's like literally everything in life that we draw inspiration from.
What's that?
Yes.
Yeah, this is inspiring us.
Yes, this is inspiring.
No, but it's a show tonight because of it.
Yeah, exactly.
No, but literally everything that surrounds us is where we draw inspiration from.
So it's really just that simple.
Awesome.
Thanks, Georgia.
Coming up next is actually our...
Thank you for the question.
Thank you.
This is actually our boss's daughter.
We've got our lunch backstage.
Sydney, question.
Hey, Dad says hi, Sydney.
My question for you is what would be the one band that will play with and why?
Oh, well, definitely either...
That's a tough one.
Oh, yeah.
That's a tough one.
I mean, yeah, really.
Probably that.
Justin Bieber, maybe.
Yeah, your nay.
No?
Yeah?
No.
Maybe a duet with Lady Gaga.
Maybe I could have a wrap-off with Eminem.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I will admit defeat right now.
I think you do all right.
I don't know about that.
But bands, I really like...
God, I found this really strange band recently that I like a lot, but maybe we shouldn't talk
about that here.
You know, bands I liked for a long time are bands like The Cure.
If you haven't heard of The Cure, go home tonight on your computer and look up The Cure.
And if you like...
We've always been influenced by bands like Let Zeppelin.
Bands like Minutework, just kidding.
Nice guys, I'm sure.
Who do you like?
Tomo's a metalhead.
He likes heavy metal.
I like the heavy music.
They're like, we don't get it.
I like a band called Nine Inch Nails.
You have to get your parents permission before you listen to Nine Inch Nails.
Thanks for your question.
Bye.
Bye.
Next up is Madeleine Reed.
Get up there, Madeleine.
My question is, if you could be any other member of your band, who would you be and why?
Will they say that again?
If you could be any other member of your band, who would you be?
I'd be Shannon, because secretly I'm a drummer inside.
I would probably be Shannon because he gets all the girls.
And if you have an aunt or maybe a single mother, you can send her Shannon's way.
I'm okay.
It's very kind of you, brother, but I'm okay.
Awesome.
Thanks, Madeleine.
Up next, we have Jane.
Hi, guys.
Okay.
Hey, what's going on?
Hi, how are you?
I'm good.
How are you?
Well, you're enthusiastic.
She's excited.
What's your name?
I'm Jane Neumfongner.
Jane Neumfongner.
Are you a theater major?
Nothing.
My question is, what is your most favorite memory about being a band?
Well, we've had a lot.
These shows that we've been playing recently, although they haven't been in New Zealand,
they've been very close.
They've been in Australia.
They've been pretty incredible.
Oh.
Yes?
Oh.
But tonight will be the test to see if New Zealand can take the crown from Australia.
We've had a lot of great memories this year.
We've played shows, really huge shows.
We played a show in Germany in front of 120,000 people.
We played really small acoustic shows.
We've done a lot.
We travel around a lot and it's been incredible, but probably being on stage here today
will be one of the most memorable.
For sure.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Thank you, Jane.
Thanks.
I'm next is Georgia Martin.
Georgia?
What is it?
Georgia.
Georgia.
Georgia.
Oh, Jai.
See, we say Georgie.
Is that wrong?
Is that a different name?
Yeah.
Oh.
She's like, yeah.
She's like, man, I didn't like you in the first place.
No, I don't like you at all.
No, you're, oh, come here.
Oh, why didn't you say so?
It's Georgia.
Georgia.
I touched her arm.
I touched her arm.
That's it.
Sorry about that.
See, those two guys over there, not to protect us, they're to protect Tomo and you.
Okay.
So Georgia, you know there's a beautiful state in America named Georgia, too.
And we've been there many times.
Atlanta is a place we play often.
So what's your question?
My question is apart from yourselves, what bands are you currently listening to?
We don't listen to ourselves at all.
You know there's this band, there's a band called Die Antwerp.
Do you know this band?
Really cool band, but I don't know how to say it right.
Die Antwerp, how do you say it?
Die Antwerp, yeah, whatever it is, Die Antwerp, you can find it at home.
D-I-E-A-N-T-O-O-W-R-D or something weird like that.
But I like them a lot.
They're fun.
And we're playing the same festival as them at Lowlands.
Oh, Lowlands.
So who do you guys like?
Oh, we like Fever Ray was an album that we liked.
Fever Ray.
It was kind of a new thing.
I like a band called the XX.
I went back in time recently.
I went back in time to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath recently.
You did?
Yeah, I'm not very excited by too much new stuff at the moment.
I found this new band called the Beatles, that was pretty good.
Oh yeah, I heard they're really cool.
They had funny haircuts.
So how's it going?
Are you good?
I'm a little bit nervous.
Oh, don't think these are just all your friends?
She's like...
Hey, now is everybody in the same grade or is it a bunch of different grades right now?
Yeah!
How many grades?
Maybe five?
Five different grades.
So is this considered high school?
Yeah!
You have five grades in high school.
Man, they're torturing you.
We only have four.
Yeah.
Alright, well, thanks for your question.
I appreciate it.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I like a band called M83 too, they're really good.
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Thanks Georgia.
Next we've got Julia.
Do you want a cussence?
Oh hey, what's your name?
Hi, how are you?
My name's Julia and I'm not going to say my last name.
Julia?
Keep it anonymous.
Julia.
Julia.
And you like the band?
Diana.
Yes.
Diana.
That's so cool.
Yeah, they're very interesting.
Nice.
So what's your question?
My question is...
She's preparing.
Great.
Breathe it out.
Wasu.
What art is so since big influences for you guys throughout the childhood?
Well, I like a lot of painters and artists, even people like Banksy recently, I think
I find really inspiring and there's a lot of books that I find really inspiring.
Again, children.
I will send you all to detention.
Yeah, look at them up there, I think they're making a lot of noise.
Yeah.
Hi.
Those are obviously the back kids that I punished.
Yeah, they're stuck up in the box.
Yes, and in the back, they always hide the back.
Always.
And over there, yes.
But influences, like we said before, everything from Led Zeppelin to the Cure to bands like
The Police or Pink Floyd or, you know, I've had different phases.
Bands like Radiohead and...
Well, look at you.
You know, bands that really have a strong sense of their own individuality and their own identity.
I love Early U2 and Nirvana is really good.
You know, and then there's 30 Seconds to Mars.
Thank you.
Thank you, Julia.
We've got Danica next.
What's your name?
Danica.
Danica?
Danica.
Hi.
Have you got any advice for aspiring musicians?
Work hard.
Are there any musicians here, raise your hand if there are.
Even if you want to be a musician and you aren't a musician yet, raise your hand.
Everybody.
Right.
Yeah.
Okay.
What is that, the choir section of there?
Is that band class?
I don't know what's going on.
Things are getting crazy.
Is this a teacher in the middle?
No.
You're just, you're a police woman.
She's there.
She's like keeping these kids in order.
My advice, I think our advice would be to all you musicians out there is, and this really goes for anybody that has a dream.
Anybody out there, is there anybody here tonight that really wants to do something different, something special with their lives?
It's okay if you don't.
Some people want to live a traditional life, a normal life, a safe life.
But if there are people out there who want to take chances and do something different, I would say this.
Work, work, work.
Don't let anybody stop you from following your dreams.
And I think the biggest secret of all is that if you do the work and you're willing to commit, and you have the passion,
and you aren't afraid to walk the path of the dreamer, anything is possible.
You guys could achieve the most amazing and miraculous things, so I would just encourage you to believe in yourself.
Amen.
And we're done to our last two questions.
Second last one is for Meg.
Hi.
Hello.
Hi.
What symbol do you feel is different today?
What did you say that again?
What symbol do you feel is different today?
What symbol?
I would probably say these days there's a symbol that we have called the triad.
And it's an old symbol.
Even there's a naughty boy who got a tattooed so he didn't forget what it looked like.
Yeah, he's got one too on his neck.
Look at that crazy man.
So it's a symbol that represents a lot of things, but for us, it's this chapter in our lives.
Now, is this the last question?
One more.
Second to last.
Wow.
Okay.
You guys getting bored of us already, huh?
Okay.
Thank you for the question.
And you're the last one?
Rebecca's the last question.
Alright.
Rebecca.
Come on, Rebecca.
Make it a good one, kid.
I said make it a good one, kid.
I want to see your favorite music video so why?
Ooh, good one.
That is a good one.
Have you guys ever seen our videos?
Yes.
I got to say, there's one for a song called The Kill.
I don't know if you've ever seen that.
It's a very strange video.
There's one for a song called Kings and Queens, which is a...
And there's one for Closer to the Edge, which is...
There are a bunch that are really different.
The videos for us are really important because it's a chance for us to say something about
ourselves, about the song, about the album, and to have an crazy experience.
We've been to China to shoot videos.
We shot the first video on the People's Republic of China.
We went to the Arctic and we shot a video on glaciers and icebergs.
It was very weird and crazy and cool.
And then for Kings and Queens...
For Kings and...
What's going on over here?
Bad kids.
But I think, recently, Closer to the Edge is probably one that's really special to us
right now because it's not only about the band, it's about our fans.
And we love our fans.
We love our family around the world.
And we love you guys.
So, thank you for your question.
Now, are there any burning desires out there?
Anybody have a question that they're dying to ask?
Okay, just stand up and ask it.
Go ahead.
Just scream it out.
Silence, part two.
It's a very good question and very sweet.
I'll repeat it so you can hear in the back all you bad kids.
She said, how does it make you feel knowing the impact you've had on so many people around the world
and how amazing and talented and gorgeous you are?
No, she didn't say that.
But it's a great feeling.
You know, you do the work and you hope it connects with people.
And we're so proud that it does.
And we're so happy that you guys have joined us around the world
and people that are watching this online.
Thank you.
We love you.
Who else has a burning desire?
You, troublemaker.
Yes, here.
Okay, who else has a question?
You, stand up.
Hold on.
What are we doing straight after this?
We're going to be doing school.
Which you can't do.
I would like to say as the newly formed principal, everyone has the day off.
Just kidding.
There's a question up there.
Yeah, what's the question?
Scream it out.
Hold on.
Everybody be quiet.
Yes, we are.
I would love to, you never know.
They seem to be a really fun court bath.
Okay.
We got one over here.
If we weren't famous, she says, no, I'll repeat it.
She says if we weren't famous, what would we be doing?
Yeah.
He would be in...
Washing dishes maybe.
He would be washing dishes.
I would be in prison.
And I would probably be in a mental hospital.
Yes, over here.
Stand up.
Yes, you in the book.
Yeah, why not?
Oh, thank you so much.
Yeah, I'll sign up for you.
Just toss it up here.
Anybody want to ask a question in the back?
Yes, you waving your hand in the back.
Stand up and scream it out.
Yes, you.
Yes.
Hold on.
Everybody be quiet.
Hold on.
Shhhhhh.
Happy birthday to...
Happy birthday to...
Happy birthday to...
Very nice.
Yes, thank you.
Happy birthday.
I don't know if we can get a picture.
We have to ask the powerful security man.
Yeah, in the back.
What's your question?
Scream it out.
What did she say?
I don't have a girlfriend.
I am married to the band.
That's funny.
I'm married to the band.
Yeah, wow.
Weird.
Yes, go ahead.
Hello.
I just quickly like to call on head girl.
Really quickly to come up here.
Abby, come here right now.
So my question is, I've been called on by my fellow...
I'm actually a hostel.
What's a hostel?
Hold on.
Okay.
Let me explain to you.
Okay, so I live at the school.
I'm just going to put it straight right there, alright?
You live at the school.
How many people actually live at the school?
120, there's 120 of them.
Just over there, yep.
There's a fence, and then there's the hostel.
Yes.
Yep.
Come for lunch, it's pizza.
Are you inviting us over for dinner?
Why not?
Okay.
My mates would be very happy.
Alright.
Anyway, my question is, would you like to have a rep battle?
Yes, I would.
