When she was in the hospital, did my mother ever talk about her family?
She wasn't much of a talker.
That sounds about right.
Life was very difficult for her when she was young.
She was an only child, and her mother died very early on.
Her father was military, Catholic, no-nonsense kind of guy.
They didn't get along.
I think living together with him frayed her nerves down to the very core, you know, made
her a paranoid, distrusting person.
I know the hospital mentioned a history of mental illness.
Well, yeah, she was in and out of St. Mary's for years.
May I ask why?
She lost her second child in utero, a girl, and after the miscarriage, she was convinced
that it had something to do with my father.
Maybe it was the stress he caused her something.
It was never clear.
But the most troubling thing was her way of coping.
She continued to believe that her pregnancy had come to term long after it had in fact
been terminated.
She thought she had the child?
Vividly.
Oh, that's horrible.
Yeah, I'm only telling you this because I want you to understand who she is.
Of course.
You seem nervous.
Should I not have said anything?
No.
Sorry.
I just...
I think as a nurse, it's really satisfying.
You can only learn so much about a person by being with them in hospital, but existing
with them in the same space they do, it gives you a real sense of who they are, what their
story is.
So many is the story you want to hear.
I think everyone has a story that should be heard.
But it's not good or bad.
No, no.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
No.
I wanted this to be a tradition you see in some cultures each child has a birth
song a tune that's sung to them throughout their entire life from when
they're just a baby like you until their adults it's a reminder of where they
come from and that there's always someone who loves them watching over them
this one was special to me so I thought it could be special to you too here it
is I hope you like it
I miss treated my baby but I can't see no
reason why Eleanor
Christ Eleanor come on
when you go

When you've got a good friend, I will stay right by your side.
