["Pomp and Circumstance"]
["Pomp and Circumstance"]
Good evening dear hearts and welcome to the show.
I'm Norman Johnson.
It's good to have you with us.
Before we go any further, I've got to tell you about something special that we're going to be doing.
We're going to have a special Christmas show.
For that, we even get double time.
My lawyers and my producers lawyers, Reggie Hudson's lawyers,
have been negotiating now for two or three weeks to try to get us a double program that night.
And I believe this will be on Wednesday night, the 23rd of December.
But we're going to tape this show ahead of time.
We're going to tape it one week from Saturday night at 6 p.m. at University Mall.
And we want to invite everybody that listens to the radio show in the morning
and watches the television show on Wednesday evening to come out and join us.
We're going to have one of those warm and cuddly, family-type Christmas shows.
And we would love to have you come out and join us.
If you will, meet my blushing bride, Lil.
And boy, we have got everything going on.
Oh, it's the season.
Huh?
It's the season for it.
It is the season.
It is the season.
The USA is all lit up and decked out beautiful lights.
Yes.
And they've got some events coming up this week that everybody ought to know about.
Yes, they have Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the grand ballroom in the University Center.
They have their annual Madrigal Dinner.
Do you notice how I let you say Madrigal?
Yes, I noticed that, Norman.
I did.
I've been practicing saying Madrigal all night long.
Now, what does that mean? What is a Madrigal Dinner?
It's very festive.
They have strolling minstrels and jugglers and jest.
And these people serve the dinner.
And the menu includes roast beef, cornish game hens, vegetables, flaming Christmas pudding, and wassal.
Flaming Christmas pudding?
Flaming Christmas pudding.
And that's kind of actually burned to the table and everything.
That's weird.
Now, this is being sponsored by the Music Department, right?
Yes, that's correct.
And they will provide entertainment also.
And as I understand it, this goes toward a scholarship fund.
I believe that's correct.
The Madrigal Scholarship Fund, and it's presented every year by the SFA Music Department.
I wonder how much does it cost?
For the general public, it is $18.
Student tickets are $12.50, and students with meal tickets, their tickets are $10.
Okay, and it's Thursday, Friday, and Saturday?
Saturday, 7 p.m. this week.
Now, as if that weren't enough, an event coming up at SFA that has become really sort of a community tradition.
Yes, it has.
It's the 13th annual Handles Messiah performance.
And this is, I believe, sponsored by Junior Forum?
Partially by Junior Forum.
Partially by Junior Forum.
Do they sponsor the last half, the first half, or how do they do that?
Probably a little bit.
I'm going to hang on.
Thank you, Norman.
I appreciate that.
You're so nice.
And now, when is that?
That is on December the 11th at 8 p.m.
And that will be in the music building.
And you can get tickets in the music building in the office for $4 per person.
And some of the people in this will be the Nacodotus High School Corral, the SFA Women's Ensemble,
the SFA Concert Choir, SFA Acapella Choir, with the University Symphony Orchestra, and
also some singers from the community.
I want you to look at the trivia prize tonight.
Now, look at this.
Chris, the California girl, if you listen to the radio show, she is world famous because of that show.
From SFA Present Presents, it's going to be on later in the show, showing us some unique gifts.
This is about as unique as you get.
This is a handcrafted by Ron Carter at Armadillo Studios in Nacodotus.
This is a Yell Texas Christmas Tree ornament.
Now, the reason it's called that is because if you grab it, you'll yell.
It's made out of barbed wire.
And hey, that's neat.
I like that.
It's one section or two or three sections altogether.
And it's going to go to the first person who calls me at 564-8386 and tells me who wrote
this, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.
We'll be right back in just a minute.
People working closely together in a law has become a team.
And finding qualified replacements can really be time-consuming.
When one of our staff had a long-term illness, Fredonia Temperies took care of everything, saving us valuable time.
Fredonia Temperies sent someone who fit right in.
They handle payroll costs like workers' compensation and unemployment insurance also.
I really recommend Fredonia Temperies to anyone who's thinking of hiring office help.
Hi.
I'm Garth Brooks.
Wait a minute.
You're not Garth Brooks.
Yes, I know.
Aren't you Danny Merrill?
That's right.
I'm Danny Merrill.
Aren't you a DJ?
That's right.
Nine to noon weekdays at KJ103.
No, no, no, no.
Get it right.
It's nine to noon weekdays with Danny Merrill on 12 in a row country, KJ103.
And I'll play Alana Garth Brooks.
Arielle Blanc, Gold Medal, Los Angeles, 1986.
Arielle Rouge.
As you know, wines are recognized by the medals they receive.
And as you'd expect, the same premium de-alcoholized wines served at the Nobel Prize ceremonies in Oslo, Norway,
is now a part of fine dining at Capellis.
Arielle wines maintain the flavor and bouquet of fine premium wine, but without the alcohol.
The perfect complement to a meal at Capellis.
A taste of something special, Capellis North Street, Nacodotius.
This holiday season, let's join together in giving the gift of time.
In working with the Nacodotius Community Coalition, we can unite together to promote a safe and healthy environment
where families can prosper, children can develop and learn,
and where individuals are valued for their uniqueness and cultural differences.
No matter what your religious beliefs or creed may be,
this season in Nacodotius is an opportunity for us to rejoice and be thankful.
Happy holidays from the Nacodotius Community Coalition.
Now, as I understand it, my staff tells me that we may have a trivia winner already,
so you can stop calling and somebody, I'll bet you, Ron Carter, has hands that are so scarred.
I thought she was in Houston. How did she do that?
She left for Houston today. I don't know how she did that.
She's full of surprises. Maybe that was just an excuse to get out of work. Maybe that's what he was.
Lady Di, bless her heart, knew that, I can hardly wait to see John the first time he grabs this sucker,
that Gene Autry wrote, Rudolph the Red Nose reindeer.
I'm recording a sequel that will be out next Christmas season called,
Red You the Red Nose TV Producer, but we'll tell you more about that a little bit later on.
Any time the staff likes that, of course, you know how staff saw,
you know what it says in the Bible, Moses leaned on his staff and died.
We're kind of like that around here.
I am always delighted to see anything that is done to promote downtown Nacodotius,
and I would like to see a lot more done. You can never do too much.
One of the things that's getting to be a tradition is what's called the oldest Christmas in Texas.
I just happen to be the oldest radio and television personality in Texas, so I fit right into it.
It's sponsored by the Al Trusa Club. Joining me now is Elaine Wingate and Bernice Parrott.
I said it right this morning. I've been calling you Potter all day long.
She was on my morning show today. I finally got it right.
Now, you'd be amazed how many people do not know what the Al Trusa Club is.
You may notice we changed the set around a little bit.
We have the Al Trusa banner in the background to give the show a little class tonight.
Now, what is the Al Trusa Club?
The Al Trusa Club is made up of executive and professional people from the community
in order to fund and service projects to better the community.
All of the members use their talents and energy and expertise in various projects, and we give back to the community.
Now, how do you get back? What do you do?
We have nursing scholarships. We have nursing home projects that we help do.
We project graduation. We help with the women's shelter, American Heart Association. I could go on and on.
We have two girls in Stephen F. Austin, a scholarship now.
A nursing scholarship now? What do you do with the nursing homes? That always intrigues me.
We give them gifts to give to others. We service all three projects.
Vernie's been doing that a lot longer than I have.
We call it a shopping spree. We buy gifts and we take them out there and we take enough help to wrap the gifts.
They want the gift wrapped. If they want it themselves, they may have it themselves.
Because so many out there have a lot of people that do not even come to see them.
But then they have family that they would like to give somebody a gift.
That gives me a chance to slip in a plug. On Wednesday, October the 23rd, from 7 to 9 a.m.,
I'm going to be broadcasting my entire morning show from Oak Manor Nursing Home.
I found out they keep the radio on down there every morning.
So they invited me to come down and do the morning show there.
So on December the 23rd, if you'd like to come down and say hi to everybody, you can do that.
We will be there Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock.
What will you be doing? We will be doing our shopping spree.
I thought maybe you were just going to be doing a radio show there.
No, no, no. We'll be doing our shopping spree.
Trying to give me competition or something. How many members does Altruza have?
35. And this is invitation only in this club.
Alright. Now then let's talk about the oldest Christmas in Texas. What do you call it then?
Because this is the oldest town in Texas.
The oldest town in Texas.
I suppose probably the first Christmas celebration in Texas could have been here, right?
Possibly.
We don't know that for sure. We can't lay claim to it for sure, but it could have been.
Now, this is what the fourth or fifth year we've done this.
This is the third year that Altruza has done this.
Like I say, this is the third year we've done this.
But no, the downtown mergers did it the first year.
Ah, so it is the fourth year.
And they turned it over to the Altruza club because there's too much work to it.
Now, when I was down there last year, the streets were full of people.
The town was kind of blocked off and all up and down the side streets.
And as I understand it, this year is going to be even bigger.
There's going to be several different facets to the oldest town celebration Saturday.
Let's talk about, first of all, about some of the exhibitors that's coming in.
I understand you have a bunch of them.
We have quite a few coming in.
We have real Indian jewelry and there's going to be some people selling trolls up down the street.
We have a puppet show, wood crafts, and a professional face painter.
A professional face painter.
I'm going to look that person up.
I had my face painted at the fair this year.
T-shirts, sweatshirts, Barbie doll clothes.
Now, what did you say, t-shirts and sweatshirts?
Sweatshirts.
Sweatshirts.
I was a little worried.
And some sequin stockings.
I'm interested in seeing what those look like.
Sequined stockings, huh?
That is some of the crafts that's coming in.
I thought my time was a little strange.
Y'all got sequin stockings and stuff, you know.
There's over 60 booths that we've got blocked off for downtown.
So there's going to be lots of vendors there with their crafts and stuff.
And I guess really from all over the area, from the Southwest maybe?
All over Texas.
They come as far as down in the valley.
Down in the valley.
That would be a good song, wouldn't it?
We'll have to write that when we get through.
All right, now, in addition to all of the exhibitors,
my favorite part is food.
Well, we're going to have some good food.
It's chocolate cake.
Remember that.
We're going to have chocolate cake.
Chocolate cake, yeah.
And the Poinett's Club will be there,
and they'll be making blueberry pancakes.
And we've got barbecue coming in,
and we have smoked turkey legs, cotton candy, chili and rice.
And the Alters' Club is going to do hot dogs, cakes and pies.
Oh, son.
There goes another 10 pounds.
You'll get anything you probably want to eat down there.
Right.
That's someplace.
Now, the pancakes, they'll start serving those when?
We're supposed to start at about 8.30.
We're getting ready for 8.30.
And of course, if you want to have lunch, bring the whole family,
whatever you want to do.
That's true.
You can get it and take it home with you,
or just eat it there and grab you a hot dog.
We'll be serving pie by the slice of a whole pie.
Really?
Yes.
That's kind of embarrassing to eat a whole pie
while you're standing there.
We'll eat the pie and take it home.
It's for a good cause, I guess I could.
And there'll be entertainment.
I've got one minute to tell them the entertainment.
Okay, we have a big stage dance in front of the Gladysampton Building
that has been put up by the firefighters,
or will be put up by the firefighters.
And in turn, we will give them some money to buy smoke detectors
to go in homes of people that cannot afford them.
See, we're giving it back to the community.
See, we're giving it right back to the community.
Girls, thank you.
You say I called you girls.
You like that?
Yes, very much.
I have learned so much about the Altruza Club today,
you wouldn't believe.
Thank you for being with us.
Now, when we return,
you're going to see some unique Christmas gifts
that are available,
and you're going to meet a lady you hear about
on the show all the time in the morning,
Chris, the California girl from SFA presents presents
right after these words from some of the folks
that make the show possible.
Hi, I'm Garth Brooks.
Wait a minute, you're not Garth Brooks.
Yes, I know.
Aren't you Danny Merrill?
That's right, I'm Danny Merrill.
Aren't you a DJ?
That's right.
Nine to noon weekdays at KJ103.
But I called you.
No, no, no, no.
Get it right.
It's nine to noon weekdays with Danny Merrill
on 12 in a row country, KJ103,
and I'll play a lot of Garth Brooks.
The advice I would give on hiring office workers
is to let Fredonia Temperes handle it.
They can place people on a temporary basis
or full-time,
and if someone doesn't fit in,
there's no firing or rehiring.
Just call Fredonia Temperes for a replacement,
and paying a weekly bill is a lot easier
than handling all those payroll requirements.
Fredonia Temperes does that for you,
and all other people are pre-screened and tested,
so that saves time and money.
I think calling Fredonia Temperes
just makes good business sense.
Arielle Blanc, Gold Medal, Los Angeles, 1986.
Arielle Rouge, as you know,
wines are recognized by the medals they receive.
And as you'd expect, the same premium,
de-alcoholized wines served at the Nobel Prize Ceremony
in Oslo, Norway,
is now a part of fine dining at Capellis.
Arielle wines maintain the flavor and bouquet
of fine, premium wine, but without the alcohol.
The perfect compliment to Amelia Capellis,
a taste of something special,
Capellis North Street, Macadoshes.
This holiday season,
let's join together in giving the gift of time.
In working with the Macadoshes Community Coalition,
we can unite together to promote a safe and healthy environment
where families can prosper,
children can develop and learn,
and where individuals are valued for their uniqueness
and cultural differences.
No matter what your religious beliefs or creed may be,
this season in Macadoshes
is an opportunity for us to rejoice and be thankful.
Happy holidays from the Macadoshes Community Coalition.
Ever since Chris became a semi-regular on the morning show,
her personal appearance fee has gone from $1.50
to $1.75.
That just shows you what the power of radio will do.
And I thought it was about time that she joined us
on the television show.
This is Chris Hollyfield,
the California girl from SFA Present Presence.
And we want to show you some unique gifts that are available.
And everything that Chris has is either handmade
or homemade by local craftspeople.
Where do you find all these people?
Most of this stuff is made from SFA students and staff members.
Not all, but most.
I started this shop because we didn't have anything like this
at that time in the town.
And being from California, I appreciate...
We know, Chris. We know.
I appreciate art and crafts.
And that's the way I grew up.
I was always taught that the most precious gift
was something that was made with your own hands
and your own time.
I've always wanted to be able to do things like that,
to paint or to create something like that.
Now, I love this.
I want you to get a load of this.
That's the best toy for every mother to get their kids.
No batteries.
My mother could get her kid this.
I love it because I'm big on carousels anyway.
No noise.
There's no motors or anything like that.
That's right.
Do we know who did this?
Yes, we do.
Can we tell them?
Yes.
Okay, let's do it.
Andy Higlinski.
Who?
Andy Higlinski.
All right.
Andy's not from around here originally, right?
No.
Originally, he's from, I believe, Indiana.
We didn't have names like Higlinski and Gilmer,
but anyway, that is a beautiful gift.
Andy, you did good.
And if you have any leftover, remember me and your will.
All right then.
Okay, what else we got?
Something.
We have, it was very difficult for me to really choose things to bring out of my shop to bring down here.
And it's real hard, as you can see, to bring everything.
We've got about 50 or 60 things, though, you know.
So what I did was I just kind of went through it.
We've got the apple ornaments.
We've got, being a consignment.
I've got a lot of things that people can sell me.
An apple ornament.
Apple ornaments with the teddy bear on it.
All right.
Being a consignment shop, the way I do it is that they bring it in.
They always set their own selling price.
I have nothing to do with their selling price.
Anybody can bring things in.
Right.
Anybody can bring things in.
If it is a child, meaning under the age of 14, or a nonprofit organization, as we have the women's shelter,
I'm selling their Christmas cards.
Now, look at this.
Now, we've got to show these.
Show them.
This is showbiz, Chris.
Okay.
I'm going to take over.
These are what?
These are handmade Christmas cards.
Right.
And all the proceeds go to the women's shelter.
Exactly.
And I wonder who did these?
Who designed these?
Just...
Children in the safe house.
I think that is absolutely marvelous.
So if you want to send a unique Christmas card, go by, and Chris will fix your...
By the way...
That's a bargain.
Everybody's always asking me what the SFA stands for.
It doesn't stand for Stephen L. Fauston.
No, it does not.
What does it stand for?
Starving Fabulous Artist.
No.
And it's not Starving Fabulous Artist presents presents.
It's Starving Fabulous Artist present presents.
Correct.
I learned that the hard way that I messed up about three or four spots.
Okay.
We've got the Christmas cards.
What else we got?
Okay.
We've got jeweled, beaded watches.
Now, this is unique.
This is unique.
This is unique.
Can we get a close-up of this from somebody?
Yeah.
Look at this.
This is a handcrafted fashion watch.
Who did this to me?
Oh, that's unique.
Yes, I do, but I can't remember her name.
Let's see if that...
Will that fit me?
Yes.
Look at that.
Isn't that sweet?
That is just so nice.
Somebody...
We do know that somebody made this, and it's available.
I'm sorry.
Now, what does this sell for?
$45.
$45, and you will have the most unique watch in town.
Some of those beads are $7 each.
Really?
Mm-hmm.
Hmm.
So, guys, you might have to pay attention to that.
Okay.
Let's just keep going.
We've got a mice ornament back this year.
That's what everybody needs for Christmas.
That's other adorable.
Why don't you get your while for Christmas?
I got her a mouse.
Yeah.
This is a mouse...
No, mice ornaments.
Got a whole bank.
More than one's mice, aren't they?
Right.
A little Christmas mouse.
That's sweet.
All right.
That's available.
Okay.
Let's see.
What else we got?
Miss Rachel's...
My favorite thing.
Rachel, if you are listening...
Let me tell you.
This is fine.
Now, y'all hear me talk about this on the show from time to time.
We give some away and so forth.
This is Fine Picotta Sauce, hand brewed by Rachel Ward, personal friend of Pat Rutgers,
by the way, in Nacogdoches.
This is good stuff.
They're okay.
Okay.
The neatest thing that I think that everybody, every house, needs to have is their zigzag
ball.
I want you to watch the crew.
Watch the crew.
There we go.
There we go.
I missed it.
Better fingers.
Is this a smurf?
Where did the ball go?
Somebody give me...
Ron, give me the ball.
I'll get it.
Ron is Chris's personal manager.
He negotiates all the contracts.
Now, this is not a smurf ball.
This is made out of what?
Something.
It's totally washable.
You can throw it.
You can kick it.
Well, we found that out.
Yeah.
It's just a lot of fun.
It really is just...
Smurf would like that.
Not doing something smart, but love that.
Yes, he would.
And I have all sorts of different patterns and colors, and you name it, my almost six-year-old.
Nathan, if you're watching, we're talking about...
Hi, Nathan.
Matthew.
He has one of those right now, and he has not let it alone since he got it.
All right.
Now, by the way, if you're decorating your house and all that sort of thing, there's all kinds
of decorations here.
Little holly hoodies here.
I call them holly hoodies.
I don't know what you call it.
Holly hoodies.
That's ostrich art.
That's ostrich art.
Is that an ostrich egg?
Yes, sir.
Look at that.
See?
You can't find that everywhere.
Yeah.
That's right.
Now, see?
If you don't know what to do with the ostrich eggs, make one of these.
That's right.
And then bring it down to me.
And we've got little...
All kinds of little decorations.
And...
Now, tell me about this.
That's the pressed flower art.
Now, are these real flowers?
Yes.
Real flowers.
Real flowers.
That somebody...
Oh.
Like this.
Okay.
These are real flowers that somebody took an iron and worked for hours pressing.
A prep.
And putting it into the thing.
Wrong did it of course.
And pressing it.
The cleaner's probably...
No, no, no, no, no.
Probably came out of my pocket.
And this is available.
Let's see.
Who did this?
We got a...
Who did this?
That's telling me what it is.
That's the paint.
That's fine, of course.
That's right.
Okay.
Now then, here's a shadow box.
We gave one of those away.
Right.
But this is not a Christmas one.
This is...
Well, I can tell that.
It's got pieces of coca-cola.
To me, these are really neat because the more you look at them, the more you find in it.
Now, see, this is stuff that's a part of our culture.
What all have we got there?
We've got...
A coat bottle cap.
Yeah.
We've got little arrowheads.
Mm-hmm.
Is that a guitar pick?
No, I guess it is.
What all that stuff is?
We've got a bone, all kinds of things.
These things are real popular now, they tell me.
That's right.
Especially for teenage boys, if you don't know what to get.
And we were talking about decorations and all that sort of thing.
We've got little angel stuff.
What's this?
Huh?
What's that?
That's a dolly bow.
Very good.
Home of the original dolly bows.
That's right.
Now, I don't know how they're doing.
Last year, we hadn't mentioned these on the radio show.
Last year, these were extremely popular.
And here they are.
What the dolly bows look like.
And they say they've got a little arborette thing.
And the little girls can wear them in their hair.
Right.
I guess little boys could, too.
The way things are going these days.
And so, what?
I want to tell that I have a whole bunch of baskets that are real nice.
If you're invited to an open house or whatever, you can stop by.
Pick up one of these and give it to the hostess and the host.
And they can use it right there by the fireplace.
And it's all ready.
And you give them a pine cone.
Or you can walk down the street and throw them at people.
Or just, you know, take the people you don't like.
We can do that.
We can thrill them.
Smell of them.
Uh-huh.
They go into the fireplace.
It's like a room deodorizer type thing.
Oh, that's fine.
That's why you have to have the cellophane over it or it would really knock us out.
Hey, that's neat.
All right.
Now then, I want to show the train.
Where's the train?
Did we get the train?
Where?
At the side of the table.
At the front.
Okay.
Everybody, excuse me.
I'll be right back.
I've got to get the train here.
Be careful.
Of course, it's a heavy train.
Now, if you want a toy.
We mentioned this on the show this morning.
If you want a toy guaranteed to be child-proof, this is it.
This is made out of oak.
Solid oak.
It's a lot heavier than it looks.
I mean, I am straining, you know.
And it would be an ideal Christmas present.
Now, these are just a few of the things that are available.
Tell everybody where the shop is.
The shops.
The real address is 110 Carrollin Street.
I tell everyone it's on the corner of North Street and Carrollin, just south of the SFA
campus.
Next to Benita Cleaners.
That's right.
We've got to get those plugs in here.
That's right.
That's right.
And don't forget that on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 10, Chris signs autograph.
We don't have the 8 to 10 glosses yet, but we're working on those.
But seriously, if you want to give unique gifts, this is just an idea of some of the
things available.
And it could make a merry Christmas for some folks.
So we hope that you'll participate in that.
Are you going to any of the big events this weekend?
The big event that I'm supposed to be going to this weekend is to go see my son play soccer
up in Dallas.
In Dallas?
Why in Dallas?
It is the tournament of champions.
You mean this is a...
That my son's team is going up to play.
I see we heard all of this about the Dragons game last week.
Right.
That's the only thing about the soccer game.
Exactly.
That's coming up, huh?
That's right.
It's kind of sad that soccer really right now is...
It's too new a sport.
Soccer is new to this area.
That's right.
Just wait.
And it's not rough and tumble.
You know, you don't get...
Oh.
It's not rough and tumble.
It is?
You should try it.
Well, I could get one of these little balls and try it.
Well.
So you kick it and hit it with your head, don't you?
Uh-huh.
I could try it.
Let me see.
I could do that.
I've got to have one of these.
I've got to have one of these and a carousel.
Uh-huh.
And a train.
And a train.
Yeah.
And I would be in good shape.
Uh-huh.
You want to tell Di?
Hi.
I thought she was in Houston.
Which camera are we on?
Hello.
I thought she was in Houston.
I thought she was too.
That's the reason why.
But be careful.
John, watch the barbs.
These are dangerous, son.
And again, goodbye and meet Chris and see some unique ideas because it helps out local
