The drive was treacherous enough, I couldn't wait for the height.
The conditions at the parking lot were ridiculous, near Whiteout.
The coldest I've ever been, my car's been near frozen.
It's so cold!
Every week we have 14 inches of snow, 10 inches, 12 inches.
We couldn't stay inside all winter, we had to get out of here.
The snow is up to our knees, our chest, sometimes even over our heads.
And there's a good 6 inches covering each branch.
It was by far the most snow I've ever been in, everything was white.
I tried to get to the bottom, I actually did, but it's solid like 2 feet.
But everywhere else it's kind of hard to find out how deep it is.
Real quick, I'm going to check how much snow I got.
I don't know if this is accurate or not, but here we go.
Oh, okay, I did it!
That looks like not much, but it's still like 2 feet.
It's very, very deep.
Let's see.
We hiked straight up and made a bunch of turns over the broken trees.
To find a trail that we could easily walk up.
But that would have been no fun.
No fun!
Not at all!
This is the ski years trail.
We're not supposed to mess up the ski years trail.
Okay.
We're the mountaineers.
Okay.
We're not near these mountains.
This is the highest point on the map.
Okay.
Okay.
We made it to the summit of Roan Mountain.
It's about 3.50 in the afternoon.
It's about 6,285 feet.
It's pretty respectable.
We tried to do about 3 foot of snow.
The first 4 inches or so were packed down, but then we'd lose our footing and go all the way through the time.
But doing that, we made it to the top, hung out the shelter, and then built the snow cape.
You know, we're headed back down, so yeah, snow day.
The hike made us realize that at some point everyone needs help from someone.
It took teamwork and huge effort to get through this, but when all of a sudden done, we made it together.
The summit was a teeny, teeny bit better than the summit.
The summit climb was quite strenuous over the tops of trees, but down the climb, you could basically fall into the snow.
It felt like my feet were wheels.
We made it up to the top of Roan High Peak.
When we survived, it was all a matter.
We found a road, and now we're just waiting for somebody to come take us up.
As areas of genuine wilderness decline all over the world, it makes it that much more beautiful when you can be immersed in pristine, undisturbed nature.
We're so fortunate to still have places on this crowded earth open to explore and experience a true challenge.
We made it up to the top of Roan High Peak.
We made it up to the top of Roan High Peak.
We made it to the top of Roan High Peak.
We made it up to the top of Roan High Peak.
Thank you.
