Hello, everyone, and welcome to another edition of Sports Reporters.
I'm Mike Gambita, alongside here with Sean Lynch and Alex Gallagher.
We've got a lot of topics to go over today, so let's get started.
So the first topic we've got to go over today is the MU baseball team.
Sean, what can we expect about the team?
Well, D3Baseball.com just released their preseason national rankings, and the Cougars
have been ranked number 25th in the country this year.
Kyle Lindsey, their second baseman, and Ryan Dorosz, their pitcher, were named preseason
all-Americans.
So look for them that have standout years and lead the Cougars.
Alex?
Yeah, in previous years, they both earned second team as sophomores.
Dorosz tied the school record for wins in a season, and Lindsey led the team in batting
average with.374.
That's a pretty good batting average.
Yeah, awesome.
So as we know, too, the baseball team this year, there is actually no seniors on the team.
Young team.
Of course, ranging from freshman year to junior year.
So we are expecting a lot of leadership coming from the freshmen, sophomores, and of course
the juniors.
So it's got to be more of a team collaboration with everybody.
Right.
I mean, the Cougars definitely have a young pitching depth as well, and pitching is key
in any baseball, for any baseball team.
There's a lot of sophomores, especially in this rotation, so the sophomores after one
year playing ball, they're really going to have to step it up in their second season
and lead the Cougars.
And just as we know, too, in the beginning of the season, it's very tough for both the
baseball and softball teams.
With the snow, they really can't go outside and practice on the field.
They have to practice inside the gym.
Alex, imagine if you're the soccer team, and you have to play inside the gym.
What does that affect?
That would definitely be a pain in the butt.
I mean, it's totally different from playing on a gym floor to grass or turf.
It's just like, same with baseball, like playing on an actual field and like gym floor, it's
completely different.
So, I mean, hopefully, like the snow clears up and they'll be able to get outside as soon
as possible.
I mean, I agree with that, but at the same time, you've got to keep in mind, it's still
very early on.
I mean, their season has, I guess, officially started, but they're still early in the pre-season.
I mean, they haven't really, you know, well, they haven't been given the opportunity to
go outside, but for our spring break, you know, that first week, last week and February,
first week in March, that's when they start, you know, going out to the field.
And I think they actually get on to Virginia to open up their season.
Florida too.
I wish I was on the baseball team.
Oh, yeah.
Florida, Florida.
That would be pretty nice.
Yeah, it's like the professional experience, you know, all the professional teams either
go out to Arizona to clear water for spirit spring training.
So, that must be nice.
Yeah, most definitely.
Well, I guess we're going to have to see what, you know, the MU baseball team has to
offer this season.
Onto the next topic, the Men's Basketball College Association, North Carolina versus
Louisville, played on January 1st, so that was last Saturday.
So they actually, North Carolina lost to Louisville 68 to 78 in overtime.
Right.
So, Sean, what is the analysis of that?
Well, Louisville's Montreal Harris, 22 points in the game, 14 in the second half alone.
He also had 15 rebounds and UNC coach Roy Williams, matter of fact, called him a possessed
that game.
The white suit.
The suit, UNC in control in the first half, Marcus Page, over Montrez-Harrell for the
three.
Page, of course, hit the game.
Winner the last time.
I mean, North Carolina, number 13 in the country of Louisville, 10.
UNC was on a 16 for the game to lead UNC.
It was 66-y going into overtime, and they just kind of killed him after that.
It was just ending in 78-68.
You don't really see that very often.
I believe, too, that this is the first time Louisville has beaten North Carolina ever
since 1999.
So, it's been quite a while since Louisville had beaten North Carolina.
And for the past four years or so, too, Louisville has certainly revamped their program.
They've been one of the top teams in the country, so it was only a matter of time before they
beat UNC, which has always been one of the top programs in the country as well.
But yeah, the one thing I noted, too, in overtime, UNC was only held to eight points, which,
you know, you can't win a game with only eight points in overtime, and Louisville definitely
shut it down on defense in that crucial period.
Yeah, once they got going, they really weren't stopped.
They just kept going, rallied.
I mean, they helped Louisville hug UNC's Marcus Page.
Their guard had only 15 points.
I think he averages of that around 17 or 18 points per game, so they got him below his
average.
But then you got J.P.
Tacota 11 points and 11 rebounds for UNC, so he didn't have himself a bad day.
They just couldn't bring back a win in overtime.
You know, another thing, too, that Louisville did is they rebounded.
They had more second chance opportunities to score, taking a look at some of the players,
Terry Rosa and Montrell Harrell, both scoring Harrell with 22 points, yes.
15 rebounds.
15 rebounds.
So double, double, but, you know, the 15 rebounds are better than the 10, yeah, 22 points.
Right, yeah.
And personally, my belief, if you get second chance opportunities on the offensive side
of the court, you're going to get more opportunities to score and you're going to score more.
Well, Rosa also had 22 points and it had a 10 rebounds, too.
And I think four of them were offensive rebounds, too, which, you know, were put back for second
chance points.
That definitely gave Louisville an advantage there.
And there was definitely a lot of driving baseline, driving in the paint, getting those
easy twos.
And there really wasn't a lot of outside game as much.
But, you know, we'll just have to see what North Carolina comes back from this loss.
Right.
I mean, of course, if anybody loses a game like this, I mean, you two have been in experience
with overtime games and losing it and then coming back the next day of practice.
So they were down 18 points and then came back to tie it and then came back and won.
Like that's pretty awesome.
Like I said in the last show we had college basketball, you know, January, February games
don't really mean a whole lot.
Like I said, it comes down to March, March Madness, NCAA tournament, you know, the one
team's vibe for the national championship.
So UNC, you know, it's a historic team.
They always have a chance to go deep into this tournament.
You know, this loss, although it will set them back a little bit, doesn't mean the world
to them necessarily.
Now, do you expect, well, this is kind of a question for both of you, do you expect Louisville
to actually make it to, let's say, the final four this week, 16?
I mean, it's up in the air, really.
They're 10.
They beat 13.
I mean, I don't know.
You never know.
It could go either way.
Yeah, when you get to the top 10, top 12 teams in that area, you know, any team really has
a chance to go to the national championship final four.
It's still early, like exactly, but I mean, look at Villanova.
Villanova is seventh in the country.
They've never been to the national tournament.
I think they've been to the final four a couple of years ago, but it's one of those teams
that, you know, you don't expect to make a run, but they'll get there.
Well, you know, we've always had those fairy tale stories of some of these, and I'm not
saying Louisville is one of those small teams, but we've had those fairy tale stories.
I think it was Florida Gulf Coast, Florida Gulf Coast that has actually made it, I think
it was the eight, fight last eight.
Yeah, lead eight.
I think they were at the 15th seed in the tournament, and they needed to be in the team.
Then you have last year, what about Duke and Mercer, that whole big upset.
Yeah, that was definitely a very big upset.
But really, honestly, anything can happen.
You never know.
I think, too, Duke was beat by Lehigh the year before that as well, too, so I think they've
been upset.
Yeah, that's true.
I mean, you know, for a North Carolina team, you know, with the amount of, how do you call
it, the experience, I mean, North Carolina has the history of becoming a very great team
during the season and just, you know, showing that tenacity and, you know, being able to
come back to, you know, the games, it works.
All right, we're going to take a quick break, and we'll be right back with MU Sports Reporters.
Oh, that's slow, that's slow, that's slow, bloody hell.
Pretty much a good day for me, would be people leaving their hands off of me.
I'm always called names, everywhere that I go, there's always someone calling me names,
calling me gay, I've been choked, thrown up against the wall, punched, nobody's ever
tried to help me.
Read to a child today and spark a lifetime of ambition.
Hello everyone and welcome back, our next topic, we're going to talk about a little
controversial, you know, player versus player, we're going to talk about Kobe Bryant versus
LeBron James.
Sean, what is your take?
Well, when you look at the story career that Kobe's had, he's definitely had significant
numbers, NBA championships, he's got five to LeBron's two, but he's also been in the
year for almost ten years longer than LeBron, seven years, seven years longer than LeBron,
so give him some time.
I know, I respect that.
You know, I'd like to hear Alex's, Alex?
I have all star games, Kobe 17, LeBron 11, average points per game, Kobe 25, LeBron 27,
okay, I'll give you that, and then total points, Kobe has 32,482, LeBron 24,000, and
total games, LeBron, or Kobe's got to be by a lot, but it's okay.
But due to the seven years, you know, difference between the two, but you forgot to mention
to the rebounds per game, Kobe only has 5.3 compared to LeBron 7.2, and assists, I think
LeBron average is just over four compared to Kobe's 3.2, so I mean, in terms of the
three major aspects of basketball, LeBron career averages leads Kobe Bryant.
Okay, but it's not only skill, I mean, obviously that's a huge part of it.
I just don't, I'm not really the biggest fan of LeBron, just.
And why is that?
Okay, well, I'm from New York, and like, before he went to the heat, he was kind of considering
going to New York, and like, everyone was all excited about it, and then he just blows
it completely off and goes to the heat, so we were all a little ticked off about that,
and then, now he's going back to the cabs, and now he's getting all this attention,
like he's like some big shot, like obviously it's a big shot, but like, he's a little
cocky for me, I don't know.
He, I mean, but that comes with being the best player in the world, you know, I mean,
I think what you're problem with him is just the saltiness from him not coming and playing
for the Knicks.
I really don't care about basketball that much, so.
Alex, I have to break it to you, your Knicks aren't doing that well this season.
Oh, I know.
I'm sorry.
I know.
But, with Kobe Bryant, you know, Kobe's out with an injury for quite some time, had to
be taken out for the All-Star game, had to be replaced, LeBron has actually missed the
most games in his career, I forget, it was a 10-game injury, day-to-day type day, so,
you know, there's lots of pros and there's lots of cons between Kobe and LeBron, but
I think they're great in their own separate ways.
LeBron James told, said Kobe, who was one of the greatest players, and Kobe respects
that, but at the same time, Kobe respects LeBron as well for being at that age.
I mean, LeBron still has a long way to go, he's healthy.
But Kobe, he's like, he's running out of gas, I mean, not to side with him.
I know, I don't care.
Go ahead.
I think too, he's possibly done for the season as well after the All-Star break, so he does
have some decisions to make whether he's going to retire, whether he's going to try
to come back next year, but, I mean, if he does retire, that gives LeBron a couple extra
years to beat some records.
It's all right.
You think it's all right?
I really don't care that much about it.
I just personally like Kobe and LeBron.
So it's more of a personal grievance that LeBron didn't come to New York than anything?
I guess if you really want to excuse me of that.
So New York people really like this.
I remember, we were all just a little ticked off about it, and now, I mean, my family personally
doesn't like LeBron, because he's just cocky and he's like...
I mean, when you have Carmelo Anthony, arguably the cockiest player in the league, how can
you call LeBron cocky?
LeBron's cocky.
Are you kidding me?
Everyone knows he is.
Yes.
I think he deservedly should be cocky.
He's the best at it.
Kobe Bryant is very cocky as well.
Kobe Bryant is cocky.
I believe he said he doesn't need to pass the ball to his teammates because he can score
all the points.
I'm pretty sure that was on camera during practice.
He said that to his teammates.
How demoralizing is that that your teammate says he doesn't want to pass you the ball?
Whatever.
Yeah, whatever.
All right.
Well, I guess we're going to leave it at that segment, but on to the next segment.
Boy, the things I do here.
The next segment we're going to talk about is the hope solo controversy.
Really there's no hope, but...
Wow, Zinger.
I had to put it in there.
Wow, very good.
Hey, I didn't talk for that whole last segment.
I'm going to put it that way, but talking about, she's getting in a little bit more
trouble.
Sean?
Well, yeah, so she has just been suspended 30 days by the United States Soccer Federation
after a DUI incident with her husband.
Her husband was caught driving a U.S. soccer team van, an official team van.
And...
That's so bad.
Intoxicated, too.
Yeah, they were both intoxicated.
He took the blame, but after her recent domestic violence problems, I think the U.S. was...
What makes you do that?
What?
I would take a car.
I guess I missed something here.
Oh, I thought you two were going to start arguing.
No, no.
I'm just expecting an argument here.
I'm pretty dumb to take the U.S. soccer's team van or team car.
Yeah.
I mean, that was pretty dumb.
But the U.S. soccer president, Sunil Galati, he hinted that Solo could be left off the
squad for the World Cup, the women's World Cup in Canada.
That would be horrible.
That would be so bad.
Yeah.
I mean, she's messing up a lot, and she might deserve it, but, I mean...
On the field, she's one of the best goalie, she is the best goalie in the world.
But you know, we also have to take into account, too, that these players are human.
It's not like there's some type of God where they can get away with everything.
I mean, I think...
If you were a normal person, I would have done this when you wouldn't be like this.
It wouldn't make the news short.
But, I mean, they would also have to deal with, you know, their jobs as well.
Of course, of course.
I mean, I'm sure their bosses would have something to say about, you know, what they've done outside
the office or whatever.
Yeah, that's true.
But Galati and their coach Jill Ellis have given Solo, supposedly, personal tasks that
she has to accomplish.
I'm sure it's something along the lines of rehab to go into, you know, AA or whatever.
While she's serving this 30-day suspension.
And if she completes all the tasks in the 30-day suspension, and Galati and Ellis think
that she is able to come back and rejoin the team, then they will allow her back onto the
roster.
But, yeah, one only time can tell.
So, we'll see.
Now, Alex, I think I recall you said that you and the girl soccer team actually went to
see a USA team play.
Yeah, they did.
Was Hope present there?
Yeah.
Okay.
So, like, do you know who's, like, kind of the backup keeper to anybody?
Like, I knew I just threw that, yeah.
I don't remember.
Yeah, I mean, I'm not too sure.
Well, I mean, that just shows you how predominant Hope Solo is on the team.
Yeah, she's the one really up to the field.
She's the leader.
I mean, her and Abby Wambach, I think they're the two oldest players on the team.
They've definitely had the experience and the leadership qualities to anchor the United
States women's team.
I think we also have to mention, too, after that U.S. van incident, that was actually
eight days after the domestic violence that she was charged for occurred, yeah, eight
days after that.
So, you know, it's just, she's probably, I mean, digging a hole for herself, but, you
know, I'm pretty sure that she's-
I think now she'll get her stuff together.
Like, just keep doing, like, I mean, you gotta, you do your thing, I guess.
You get caught once.
It's okay.
Not okay, obviously, but, like, then you get caught again.
I think you can go ahead and change your ways, right?
It sounds like you've been through that before.
No, you're right, Mike, she might be in that hole still, but, you know, Galati and Alice,
they've given, through the suspension, they've given her the time to find her way out and
dig herself out.
So, I think, on behalf of all the United States soccer supporters, we hope she does.
Praying, bet you can get us all together.
Yeah, I mean, we all do.
Or else it might be a rough world cup.
Yeah, it definitely might be, but, I mean, of course, we'll be supporting her every
way, whether she's doing right or wrong, I mean, mostly anybody, so, all right, we're
going to take another quick break and we'll come back and talk about some Super Bowl action
here on MU Sports Supporters.
Pretty much a good day for me would be people leaving their hands off of me.
I'm always called names.
Everywhere that I go, there's always someone calling me names, calling me gay, I've been
choked, thrown up against a wall, punched, nobody's ever tried to help me.
I'm always called names, calling me gay, I've been choked, thrown up against a wall,
punched, nobody's ever tried to help me.
I'm always called names, calling me gay, I've been choked, thrown up against a wall, punched,
nobody's ever tried to help me.
And welcome back, everybody.
We saved the best for last.
We did.
Yes, we did.
So let's talk about the Super Bowl.
Very great game.
The halftime show really didn't let me down either.
No.
So...
I heard you were a big Katy Perry fan.
I am a big Katy Perry fan.
So, well, we'll talk about the halftime show a little bit later, but Sean, what was your
take on the Super Bowl?
I thought it was a great game throughout.
I was surprised.
Last week's episode, I predicted that it was going to be a game won by...
There was a close game.
No, it was.
But I thought it was going to be won by the ground in the rushing game.
And the Garrett Blamp for the Patriots only had 40 yards in that game.
Marshall and Lynch did have 102 yards rushing, but this game was definitely one in the air.
I think Tom Brady threw over 300 yards, Russell Wilson almost under 300.
Just under 300.
Yeah.
So I was surprised by that.
Now, Alex, I've actually saw your post on Twitter saying that you were actually voting
for the Seahawks.
Yeah.
Do you ever sometimes feel like a plastic bag wanting to start again?
That was a Katy Perry verse.
Come on.
Okay.
That was pretty loud.
I don't know.
I'm just a little upset about it.
I mean, the whole, like, last play of the game, one yard line, you're going to throw
the ball.
Like, what?
Yeah.
I think we all flipped out.
Everyone is so confused about that.
I think we all flipped out.
When you have Beast Mode with Marshall and Lynch, what are you going to do?
Right.
Why would you throw the ball?
It's funny, too.
The day afterwards, everyone, you know, put up Vine videos or YouTube videos.
Oh, don't do it.
People playing Madden or something on the one yard line, and they just had Marshall
and Lynch running it in from about 10 different ways, and all you had to do was just get the
ball over and everything.
Yeah.
And people were just like, you know, Pete Carroll, brah, or whatever, you know, it was
funny.
But it's true, though.
Like, there was a lot easier way to score.
I think definitely the meme of the week was Marshall and Lynch's face after they saw the
interception at the one yard line.
Oh, he was reclined on the bench or something?
No.
When he was sitting there, he was just like...
You mean Sherman?
Sherman.
Sorry.
What'd I say?
Marshall and Lynch.
Yeah, I said that.
Okay.
Anyway.
Sherman's face was like, he was shocked.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He was very shocked.
I would be, too.
But they went, you know, I went back and looked at the stats.
In previous games, Marshall and Lynch has played.
The Seahawks have given him the ball on the one yard line five times, and he's only scored
once in those five times.
He also was on one.
He had first down, like, he had four more tries to get in the goal.
But they, but they were, it was in the final minutes here, and there was only a timeout
remaining.
So it is a sketchy.
I would have, I personally, if I was a coach, I mean, I don't know a whole lot about coaching
football, but I would have tried running the ball to Marshall and Lynch, but if you look
at the numbers, was Pete Carroll...
To win the game, I think he would have...
Was Pete Carroll absolutely wrong in his decision?
I think he was wrong, but not 100%.
I think, you know, there were statistics that he looked at to try to score, but...
Yeah.
You know, just taking a look at some other things that happened.
He remained cursed with the juggling 33-yard catch while on his back.
Nobody knew it was going to be a catch, and I think...
I was like, what?
Everybody erupted.
Yeah, that was the catches of the year.
If not the catch, but I knew it would help back on, of course, but...
I think another thing, too, Jeremy Lane, in the beginning of the game, had his first career
interception and ends up with a very bad injury, and we hope that he recovers, too.
I mean, it was absolutely terrible.
Did you guys hear about the simulation game, the Madden thing?
They predicted it would be 24-14 going into the fourth quarter, and it was, and they actually
had Edelman...
What is his name?
Edelman.
Edelman scoring that touchdown, and then they predicted that the pass would win 28-24.
That's kind of scary.
I mean, people are a little, like, convinced it might be a little rigged.
Along with that, the Madden game, a lot of people are saying that it was rigged once,
you know, Russell Wilson threw the ball on the goal line, too.
They thought, I mean, he threw away, and then he got to the Patriots, said, cornerback.
It spreeks me out a little bit.
And how about that fight with, like, the last 18 seconds to go?
I would have done the same thing.
You would have done the same thing?
Yeah.
It's funny you say that, too.
Last night, Rob Gronkowski was on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Jimmy Kimmel asked him about the
incident, and he, you know, he first said, oh, I don't remember what you're talking about.
I didn't throw a punch.
And then they had a video.
The video of him throwing a punch.
And he said, oh, yeah, well, I figured it was the last game of the season.
I didn't have a game next week, so I thought I'd throw some haymakers, you know?
You know, it was definitely quite the Super Bowl, but it was very interesting.
So our final topic, talking about the greatest of all time, our favorite or the best Super
Bowl commercial of all time.
Sean, what did you watch?
Well, this year, I didn't think it was the best year for Super Bowl commercials.
The Budweiser didn't disappoint, again, with the Lost Dog commercial with the Clydes
and the Horses.
I wanted to cry.
Yeah, that's how bad it was.
Just seeing, like, the muddy puppy running back home to the farm now, that was a tear
jerker, but I kind of like the Mophie, the cell phone charging case with the Wing God
cell phone battery runs out.
It's all chaos, you know, like it's, you know, upside down.
I liked the one, the Microsoft commercial with the kid with the prosthetic legs.
I thought that was cute, too.
Yeah, that was nice.
That was a good commercial.
There was a lot of sympathetic commercials this year.
There were a lot of tear jerker ones.
One of them was especially the Coca-Cola commercial.
It was the world is what we make, like current issue of bullying and the world was so bad.
And then ending up with the Coke spilling on the server, and then all of a sudden making
the world go round.
I liked that one.
I had that down here for one of my house.
Dan Kimbrough even pointed out, he was like, if Coke spilled on my server, I would be so
mad.
In terms of comedic commercials, I did like the Fiat blue pill commercial.
What was all that about?
I came out of nowhere.
I was not expecting that to happen.
That was good.
Certainly, it was pretty funny.
You can't pass the Kim Kardashian commercial either.
The whole selfie, dad.
Yeah, I liked how our caption was famous person.
They didn't know what to call her, so we just called her famous person.
Do we have any past years that we've had?
Yeah, from Super Bowl 44, and this is my greatest Super Bowl commercial of all time, is the
Doritos commercial, which it was a little boy meeting his mom's boyfriend for the first
time, and he comes in, sits down, tries to take the boy's Doritos.
The boy slaps him across the face and says, keep your hands off my mama, and keep your
hands off my Doritos.
The Doritos commercials, I feel like they used to be like a lot, and that didn't seem
at all.
Doritos used to have like two or three commercials every Super Bowl.
Right, and there wasn't one this year, was there?
They were kind of lacking a little bit.
I think Go Daddy was kind of lacking too.
I think it's been kind of decreasing ever since.
I forget what year it was, but it was the Go Daddy commercial with the quote-unquote
nerd, and then one of the Go Daddy girls just making out for about 30 seconds.
It was pretty far-fetched that they did that, but Donna Capatrick used to be the spokesperson.
Her contract has expired, so that's why we didn't see her this year, which is kind of
important.
Yeah, Go Daddy, I think it was for a good reason they stopped doing those commercials.
I mean, just getting back to the present one, you know what really threw me off was the
Dove commercial, commercials of little kids caring for their daddy, like their daddy caring
for their kid, and then all of a sudden it turns out to be a soap commercial.
But when you think about it, it's men plus care.
So I mean, it made sense, but it threw you off like when it showed up.
You know what else it kind of threw me off too, the Nissan commercial with the race
car dad.
That was a little weird.
It was kind of emotional, but at the same time, it felt like the lesson I got from that
was like, you know, Nissan, poor fathers drive our cars or something.
All right, well, this concludes MU Sports Reporters, I'm Mike Ambedo with Sean Linton,
Alex Gallinger, and we'll see you next time.
Oh, that's slow, that's slow, that's slow and bloody slow.
Pretty much a good day for me would be people leaving their hands off of me.
I'm always called names, everywhere that I go, there's always someone calling me names,
calling me gay.
I've been choked, thrown up against a wall, punched, nobody's ever tried to help me.
So let's join hands, put people unite, I'm a head and pass, your mama having a time,
your mama can be the most lovely, looks to change a life, put people unite.
Get to a child today and spark a lifetime of ambition.
Thank you.
