TYPES OF A PALM
In this episode of the Grand Circle, we will take you on a journey from the South Rim to
the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, taking in the sights of Northern Arizona along the
way.
Leaving the east gate of the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first stops we made
was at the Little Colorado River Navajo Reserve.
This good could be more different to the Grand Canyon, and is worth a little time to stop
and explore.
Continuing on our journey to the North Rim, we join up with Highway 89 heading north.
This is our first glimpse of the Vermilion Cliffs.
These cliffs form part of the Grand Staircase, up onto the Colorado Plateau.
A short distance along, we arrived at Marble Canyon and the Navajo Bridge.
This is the only bridge, apart from the Glen Canyon Bridge, by nearly 1,000km.
It was built in 1927 by the Arizona State Highway Commission, and really helped open
up this part of the country.
Just past Marble Canyon is the remains of the old Cliff Dwellers Lodge.
Two people set up this outpost in the 1930s, while escaping the Great Depression.
They started serving refreshments, and built these ingenious homes out of the overhanging
boulders in the area.
By late afternoon, we had reached our last lookout, giving us this view of the Vermilion
Cliffs.
We then proceeded to climb into the mountains, through the forest, and onto our lodging for
the night at Jacobs Lake.
This was a really comfortable stop on our way to the canyon, with great food and friendly
people.
After a very pleasant night, we set out finally to reach the North Room of the Grand Canyon.
It was a further 44 mile journey, through the Kaibab National Forest, to finally reach
our destination.
The Grand Canyon Lodge at the end of the road is a great place for lunch, or even to stay
as if you can get a booking.
It's only open approximately six months of the year, so booking well in advance is required
to secure your lodgings.
After lunch, there are many lookouts to explore, which all put a different perspective on the
Grand Canyon.
As you are over 1,000 feet higher on the North Rim, the vegetation and formations have a
very different character that is fascinating to explore.
This is why it's worth the trek to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
