Corporate America has sold its promises of a newer, better, improved life, and it has
One of the things missing on mainstream media is any critique of the mainstream media
Disinformation, disinformation
I want to produce my own culture. I don't want to be entertained
Music
We're taking control of our TV sets and taking control of our lives
There was a lot of ferment between people who were artists and activists
And Paper Tiger was right in the middle of that
You know, it's media produced by people for other people
As opposed to corporations producing media for consumers
Music
Everyone has something to say, whether they say it in words or something visual
Music
This is a disgrace that in the richest city in this world
We still have people sleeping on the streets
Music
Only international organizations dealing with the global rules of trade between nations
Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably, and freely as possible
The result is a more prosperous, peaceful, and accountable economic world
Talk about emancipation, take the family wash, for instance
Music
I'd like to thank Disney to exposing me to the queer voice
To the dissentant voice
To the voice of the other and the voice of the deviant
And part of this new narrative and new vision is something that's a creative opportunity and responsibility
My question is, who gets to make that narrative and who gets to see it?
Can you point that camera up to your face?
Music
Music
Good evening, my name is Richie Perez
I'm a member of the Committee Against Fort Apache
And I'm here tonight to talk about the movement that's developed in the South Bronx against the film Fort Apache
And the continuing efforts to counteract negative images of Puerto Ricans and blacks in the media
Music
Used mostly in the 80s and 90s to push back against clampdowns on freedom of expression
That were being enacted through intellectual property rights infringement cases
Copy fighting was a mode of reusing corporate images deliberately
In order to make a greater statement about the brand or company
I don't have any shame in saying like I'm a total feminist and I talk about those kind of issues that I find important
I talk about being a mixed Asian, having different races and identifying with them
And that being very important to me and having an identity
Especially if you're a person of color and your voice is not being heard
And especially for Asians who usually don't say much because I mean I'm still fighting against my own conditioning
Some helpful reminders when you are watching the American news media in action
Watch for these phrases, it will help you decipher what's going on
The interesting passive voice here, believed to be considered to be
That's where we get to generalize however the hell we want to
Experts, a common noun handy for promoting a favorite point of view
Now stop it right there for a second, let's just look at this right
This is a very typical beginning of a news program
In fact it contains in the words March the 9th 1983
Almost the only hard fact you're likely to get in the 22 minutes you spend watching it
Now the New York Times is regarded as a golden source
We know that it is a reflection of the general racism usually sugar coated
Sugar coated manure I like to say, and they're very good at the sugar coating
It's as if they were a sort of bridge mixed factory
And they were sugar coating the manure, chocolate covering the manure
And they hand it to you and they sort of inspire your trust by suggesting
We print all the news that's fit to print
One campaign that sustain has been working on is against Caterpillar
Caterpillar makes these huge bulldozers that are sold to Israel
And outfitted specifically for the demolition of Palestinian homes
Often with people inside of them
In a certain way we take that neoliberal system and invest it
So that those same technologies that are produced by a system that is in another country
That is capitalist, that are capitalist companies
That have nothing to do with this issue of the wave
But if we can invest our possibilities and take them out of our favor
That changes the paradigm of movement
The Indian miners of underdeveloped Bolivia have given the world a unique lesson
Without any theory behind them
They have been the pioneers in effectively practicing for 40 years
Truly alternative communication
And they did it with their bare fingers and at times with their own blood
In doing so, they have shown that the people, the forgotten millions of the world
Are capable of building democratic forms of communication
Do we look like animals?
Well, in referring to the Central Park Suspects
The word ban is used once
The word pack is used ten times
The word gang is used two times
And wildlings is used five times
There are acots, there are acots
It's even quoted, it's called in the masses
Yay America, we can do it
The right stuff
Things that you can do, call us your media
Give us the kinds of things that we're talking about here
That you want our coverage of the other side
You stick and try to these experts who are all white men
Who all have connections with the government
We are focusing on making a video about these residents
Green chimneys residents
And about the problem that we deal with every day
With living together
It's not easy to live with 25 teenagers at the same time
But we just focusing about all the travel that we go through
As in being the only gay group home
It's like, not easy
People are generally outraged about what's happened
As a result of the foreclosure crisis
But Ms. Ward's case is pretty much the prime example
She was given a fraudulent loan years ago
She tried to rescind the loan
Bank went ahead with it anyway
And then, you know, her loan was sold to the next bidder
And she was put into a foreclosure action
Once in her house she wasn't able to pay the bills
You gotta put up a hard fight for the baby
And that means the faster you have to stick with it
You know that you're right
You know you have the evidence
You know you have the facts
Don't let nobody walk over you
So why here in this community
Where it's predominantly Chinese and Latino
Why can't we have the same and equal protections
As the wealthier white community
This plan is racist
This plan is discriminatory
And we are demanding that the city council member
Sarah Gonzalez and Mayor Bloomberg
Give us the same and equal protections
As the other communities have had
And if everybody agrees with me
I want you to raise their side
The strength of our station has always been
Its ability to reach out to different areas
And to network with different people
And organizations in the community
And I want to really reinforce the idea
Of networking with people and organizations
In your community
Because when we first got our transmitter going
We didn't have a mixing board
We didn't have a turntable or a tape player or anything
And so immediately we found that
All the in-studio equipment that we needed
The basic equipment was all donated
Through just reaching out in the community
To different people that were interested
In being part of the station
Why are so many of us so terrified of change
Instead of saying yes to the chances we get to grow
To get better
We say no
There are so many ways of improving our looks
We've got makeup, exercise
And thanks to Clarell, we've got hair color
This specific project is a large-scale street art
Takeover slash public individual takeover
Of NPA Outdoor Advertisings locations in Lower Manhattan
NPA Outdoor operates street level
Buildboards basically
They are doing so illegally
So we're going to go out and paint them
132 of them white
And then we're going to have about 50 artists
Go out and paint murals and messages
And all sorts of crazy things
Some of these afterwards
Why not implant welfare mothers with bourgeois embryos
Killing two birds with one stone
After all, if they're having our babies
They can't be having their own
For each $80 pair of Nikes
12 cents goes to labor
Meanwhile, back at the dance party
The average American woman
Can only expect to earn 71 cents or less
Compared to the dollar earned by her male co-worker
The average American woman can only expect to earn 72 cents or less
