Um, the thing that really, the thing that really got me thinking about it was, um, Iraq
and, and Hurricane Rita.
I went to Iraq during my second year in law school, and I mean it was a war zone, um,
and it was, there was, there were people getting killed, um, you know, soldiers here
and there, uh, Iraqi civilians all the time, um, you know, you heard bombs going off, um,
the people were, were poor, um, you know, they really, they really didn't live under
good conditions and I thought, you know, and I was so thankful to be American and I'm
still thankful to be an American.
When I came back from Iraq to stay, huge relief, okay, no more, I don't have to go back, uh,
my time was up in the National Guard, I'm out, I'm home, I'm safe, I'm secure.
Three days later, Hurricane Rita hits and, you know, I realized, wow, you know, I'm not
as safe and secure and, uh, as I thought I, as I thought I was, I mean, we really, we,
we live a wonderful life, but it's a very, there is a complex web of things being shipped
of, you know, on, on time delivery, um, you know, today it's considered to have, um, inventory.
It's considered waste, you know, you don't, you don't, uh, you don't keep inventory in
a store.
Because you need it, it's shipped in on, you know, if that breaks down, you know, we could
really be in a bind.
I used to think about vegetables or food in purely economic terms and I, and I, you know,
I like working in the yard, um, and I thought about growing a vegetable garden when I was
in college, but I was like, hmm, you know, that's a lot of work and I can just go get
those tomatoes at the store, you know, that's a lot easier.
Um, since then I've seen that, that, um, food is about more than just an item in my budget.
For one thing, um, I have, I have learned that there are a lot of things that are in
our food, pesticides and, you know, other things that could cause us harm that I don't want.
And then there are a lot of things that I want, that we need, my body needs, that's not in
the food, um, even, even in the produce section of the grocery store, you know, which is definitely
better than the center of the grocery store where you have all the processed food, you
know, can I get more tasty, more nutritious food than what comes out of a garden?
