Now, you look valentine-ish, don't you?
Yes.
Got them red and everything like that.
I did this in honor of the Timbertones.
That's right, who are our special guests tonight.
We're going to sing love songs and talk about the Timbertones.
On the radio show, I lovingly called them the Norman Tabernacle Choir, but they are
in reality the Timbertones.
Also, we're going to have the great Nakadotius giveaway, and everybody's going to want this.
I can guarantee you this is a beautiful bracelet, hand-crafted by Vanessa Adams right here
in Nakadotius, and being given courtesy of Chris, the California girl at Starving, fabulous
artist, present, presents.
Now, how do you win this, you may ask?
Well, it's real simple.
Not now, but when we go into the commercial break, all you have to do is to call in and
give us your name, and we'll put your name in the basket, and at the end of the show
we'll have a drawing, and you could be the winner, and we'll tell you the number several
times, but I'll tell you once right now, it's 564-8386, but again, wait until the commercial
break before you do that, and again, my thanks to Chris, the Starving, fabulous artist, right
next to Benita Cleaners.
Now, should you win this, this is very important, you can pick it up only this Saturday between
10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and you've got something to tell the folks about it.
Yes, I do.
Tuesday evening, February 15th, 7 to 8 p.m., Pondins Hospital will be sponsoring a program
as a community health service, and that is Caring for Aging Parents by Dr. James Buckingham.
Okay, we're going to take a quick break, and we'll be right back.
Welcome back, I don't know what we're doing, no earthly idea, but you were telling them
about a seminar.
Yes, a seminar at Pondins Hospital, and the topic of this is Caring for Aging Parents,
which is something that is really of an interest to everyone.
This is going to be presented by Dr. James Buckingham, who is a psychiatrist, it is February
the 15th from 7 to 8 p.m. at Pondins Hospital.
The best part about it is the price.
It is absolutely free.
And this is the first seminar of its kind, and children of aging parents who have to
care for our parents go through a lot.
Now that will be coming up next Tuesday night, at what time?
7 to 8 p.m.
Alrighty, and don't forget, you can win this beautiful bracelet, courtesy of starving fabulous
artists present presents, and you can start calling right after we go into the commercial
break, 5-6-4-8-3-8-6, and we'll be right back.
People working closely together in a law has become a team, and finding qualified replacements
can really be time-consuming.
When one of our staff had a long-term illness, Fredonia Temporaries took care of everything,
saving us valuable time.
Fredonia Temporaries sent someone who fit right in.
They handled payroll costs like workers' compensation and unemployment insurance also.
I really recommend Fredonia Temporaries to anyone who's thinking of hiring office help.

morning at Memorial Hospital.
On the radio show, I'll livingly call these guys the Norman Tabernacle Choir.
They are in reality the Timbertones and we have them several times a year but especially
on Valentine's.
This is the time of the year when you guys really shine, aren't you?
And have a lot of fun.
Forest Price is president this year at the Timbertones and you probably remember most
of the guys from last year but why don't you introduce everybody?
This is Roland Bungie who sings bass for us.
This is Jim Dennis who is singing lead today and this is James Krauskopf who is our tenor
for tonight.
So we don't have two Jims, we have a Jim and a James.
That's right.
That's right.
That's right.
That's right.
That's how we keep them separate.
Tell who's who.
Now a little bit later on before the show is over we're going to tell people how you
guys will actually go out on Valentine's Day and sing for people's sweethearts.
I started to say for their sweetheart or wife but I guess we shouldn't say it that way.
That didn't register right.
Tell me a little bit about the Timbertones.
How it got started?
Well, Timbertones is a nationwide, is a part of a nationwide organization, the S-P-E-B-S-Q-S-A
Incorporated.
Let me write that down.
Today for the preservation and encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singers in America Incorporated.
We have a chapter here I've had for about twenty-two years now.
This is our twenty-second year and we are a part of the national organization.
It's about thirty-six or thirty-seven thousand people across the nation and there are affiliated
groups worldwide.
And anybody can be a part of the Timbertones.
Anybody can be a part of it, do not have to be professional.
We are just amateurs for the most part.
Very good amateurs.
But we work at it a little bit.
We work at it every Tuesday night at the North Street Church of Christ where we practice
and we invite men who sing to come out and give it a try.
The idea is not being perfect but having a lot of fun doing it and you guys do it.
That's right.
The name of the whole organization suggests to you that it's got to be fun.
Okay, we're going to start out and sing a love song for the people listening as our
little Valentine gift.
And what have you all selected for the first one?
This is the classic Valentine song.
Yes, absolutely.
All right, ladies and gentlemen, the Timbertones.
Let me call you sweetheart, I'm in love with you.
Let me hear you whisper that you love me too.
Keep the love life blowing in your eyes, oh true.
Let me call you sweetheart, I'm in love with you.
Let me call you sweetheart, I'm in love with you, with you.
All right, now that's just an example.
Now, as I said a little bit later on, we're going to tell people how on Valentine's Day
you will go to someone's office, to their house, wherever they happen to be and sing
the love songs like that.
And we'll tell you why.
I want to talk to some of you individually about how you got involved in the Timbertones.
But first of all, how do you select the songs?
I would assume there are certain songs that lend themselves to barbershop singing, right?
Absolutely.
What kind of material?
Well, basically, there are songs that most of them have been written years ago.
Sometimes somebody will come up with a modern song that is in the range for amateur voices
that lends itself to the barbershop style.
See, the melody for these songs is in the second highest voice, which we just call the lead.
So the tenor part, which is the highest voice, is a harmony part as well as the baritone
and the bass.
I love harmony.
I think I love groups that do good harmony.
My favorite groups in country music is the Statler Brothers.
I don't know if you ever get to watch Jimmy on the Statler Brothers show.
He is absolutely superb.
I'd love to be able to have that ability to sing like that.
Let's start out with you, James.
How did you get involved with barbershop?
About, I've been in it with eight years now.
Eight years ago, I went to one of their shows and I was invited by a former barbershopper
and by going to the show, I enjoyed it and started coming on Tuesday nights and well
then it was Monday nights and practicing with them and before you knew it, I was hooked.
Were you a singer before then?
Oh, I was singing in college and church.
In church choirs and things like that.
How did you feel the first couple of times you sang with the group?
A little awkward, a little bit, because it was a little different, but it grew on me.
Now, I've got, you've got to see the mustache here.
It's really obvious that you are cultivating the mustache.
You just started doing this recently, right?
Right.
Because you didn't have that last year.
You used the wax and all the things that go with it.
You used the bigger one.
By this time next year, that mustache would be way out here in Curl two or three times.
I don't think my life would let me do it that long.
You know, we associate barbershop singing with barbershops.
Why?
That's where it began.
A lot of it.
That was a gathering place.
Yeah, it was a gathering place in town.
The community gathering place for men was to go to the barbershop.
And while they were, what, waiting for their kid to get in their haircut?
They'd sing along.
Telling lies and things like that.
They'd just sing along with it.
Like they still do.
Run out of lies, they'd sing along.
People don't realize what it used to be that you could get done in a barbershop.
You could get your tonsils taken out in a barbershop, couldn't you?
In fact, that's where the striped poles and barbershops came from.
They used to do surgery in barbershops.
You could be entertained.
A lot of people used to always get their shaves at a barbershop.
So times have changed.
In a while since you did that, I guess.
Yeah.
However, I have done that.
It's been a long time, but in my hometown, the big event of my life was when I was a
teenager and I started shaving.
The first time I got to go to a barbershop and get a shave.
I remember the hot towels they used and all that sort of thing.
It felt so good.
Shaving's not a pleasure now, you know.
It used to be an event.
We've already given you one example of songs.
When we come back from the break, they'll be singing some more songs for you.
And don't forget you can call in and win the bracelet from starving fabulous artists,
present presents.
All you have to do is just give us your name and we'll put it in the basket.
The phone number is 564-8386.
Give us a call right now and we'll be right back.
I'm Stephen with Adam and Steve's Carpets on South Street.
We've been in business here in Nacodotos for over 20 years helping local folks with all
their floor covering needs.
If you have a new home or would simply like to give your old home a whole new look, come
shop with us at Adam and Steve's.
If you're in the market for carpet, no wax vinyls, ceramic tile, hardwood floors, wallpaper
or mini blinds, we'll see to it that you find just the products you need at a price that
won't break your budget.
So come on in to see us at 1622 South Street and shop with folks who'll give you the kind
of service you used to expect from all merchants.
What I would give on hiring office workers is to let Fredonia Temperes handle it.
They can place people on a temporary basis or full time and if someone doesn't fit in
there's no firing or rehiring.
Just call Fredonia Temperes for a replacement and paying a weekly bill is a lot easier than
handling all those payroll requirements.
Fredonia Temperes does that for you and all other people are pre-screened and tested so
that saves time and money.
I think calling Fredonia Temperes just makes good business sense.
South Street or call 564-HON.
Welcome back, we are delighted to have a special Valentine's gift for you tonight and that is
some beautiful music from the Timbertones so without further ado let's hear from the
Timbertones.
Gentlemen.
My heart I love you Life would be not without you Life my life my darling I love you I love
you I can forget you never From you I never can sever Say you'll be mine forever I love
you
Well I'll tell you I can see it right now people all over Nacogdoches are standing up cheering,
crying, hugging each other, little hearts floating over North Street I can just see it.
Jim how did you get involved in this?
Well you get hooked on it when you hear a really good chorus thing like the Dallas chorus
they have about 300, how many members they have?
A couple hundred.
A couple hundred members and once you hear something like that you get the chills and
they never go away and you try to stay associated with it as long as you can and that's how
I got started.
I guess everybody in town knows Roland.
Roland how many years did you practice veterinary medicine?
Well in here in Nacogdoches I've been with the U.S. Department of Agriculture doing veterinary
medicine type work for a little over 20 years.
You almost got to hang out and then you stopped?
Just about.
Decided to be a barber shopper.
How long did you get involved?
I was a barber shopper when I came.
I belonged to the chapter in Des Moines, Iowa before I came to Nacogdoches.
Were you in the original group of the local organization?
No I wasn't.
They started in April a year before I came.
I came in 73 when they had their first annual chapter show in the fall of 73 but they actually
started in April of 72 and I was therefore not a charter member.
Roland does a little bit of everything.
He is involved in so many things more than just about anybody in town.
Forrest you are president of the organization this year.
How long have you been involved with it?
He only here about eight years.
I have been around barber shopping really from the time when it started.
I began in Tulsa, Oklahoma and that was my home.
In fact the guy who started it was in our church so we knew him.
He was a contemporary of my dad so I was around it early in the game but did not actually
join until I came to town here.
One of the members invited me out so I came out and liked what I saw and knew what it
was all about and came on.
These guys do so many things.
So many groups call on you when they are having programs and dinners and things like that.
I know that I have called on you a number of times for things like the adult learning
center and programs like that.
You are always there and you are a real credit to the community.
We want to do another song and then when we come back we are going to tell you how you
can make your Valentine real special this year.
Gentlemen I like the way you do that.
What do you call it?
It is called a pitch pipe.
Since this is acapella and unaccompanied music it is just a good idea to everybody to start
on the same pitch.
That is why you do that.
You are just trying to impress people.
I know what you are doing.
Impress us.
I love you truly, truly dear, life with its sorrow, life with its tear, fades into dreams
when I feel you are near, for I love you truly, truly, truly dear.
Tell me why the stars do shine, tell me why the ivy twines, tell me why the skies are blue
and I will tell you why I love you, because God made the stars do shine,
because God made the ivy twine, because God made the sky so blue
that is a reason why I love you.
Alright, I like that.
I have always enjoyed listening to this group.
This group has been awfully good to me over the past few years.
In fact, it was last year.
I was honored to have been presented an award that they give every year called the Harmony Award.
I appreciate it.
That was a strange experience, because at that time it was what a year goes past December, I guess it was.
I had pneumonia and couldn't go anywhere.
My wife is the type, she really peppers me.
If I am not supposed to be doing something, I don't do it.
I had promised her, she said, the only thing you have to promise me over the holidays is that we go to hear the Timbertones, go to their banquet.
I didn't want to break the promise, and I thought, she will say something about not going.
She literally drugged me out of bed, but I am glad she did.
I thought, she is really acting strange, normally.
I was quite honored, and I appreciate it.
Okay, let's tell people about Monday and the singing Valentine.
We are also going to start doing this Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening, since Monday is actually Valentine's Day.
Usually some people want it in the morning, the evening before maybe, or maybe even sometime the next day.
You know what would be funny to do?
Wouldn't it be funny if you paid them to go sing to someone while they were in church?
Can you imagine the look on the preacher's face when you guys came in?
No, I don't do that.
Alright, so you will sing Sunday afternoon, Sunday evening, and all day Monday.
By the way, they are going to be on my radio show Monday morning, immediately following the 8 o'clock news, and singing some more love songs.
We will talk about Valentine's, but tell people how this works now.
Of course, you got that.
Well, the thing that we do is that you call in and make arrangements for the time and place where you want it done.
At that appointed time, we go out as a quartet.
We will sing two love songs, present the person who is to receive it, a rose, a long stem rose, appropriately wrapped,
and we will take a Polaroid picture and leave a picture with you so you can have some memory of the occasion.
The cost is $25.
And what's the phone number?
The phone number is 560-6546.
Okay, and we will remind folks of the phone number right after the break.
I would like to thank you very much for being with us.
Sorry for that.
And if you want to preach your honey on Valentine's, give them a call.
And I'll give you the phone number when we come back to wrap up the show right after this.
I'm proud.
On 860-KSFA, the talk of the town.
Welcome to the Spanish community.
Here in Jaspancha, Pablo Espanol.
And let's give away this beautiful bracelet made by Vanessa Adams.
Compliments of Starving Fabulous Artists present presents.
Yeah, why don't you send us a spell on Valentine's and let you read it.
Bruce Hill.
Bruce Hill.
You are going to look so good wearing this.
And remember, you have to pick it up this Saturday and this Saturday only from 10 until 2 at Starving Fabulous Artists present presents.
And that's going to wrap it up.
We got to go.
We're out of time. See you tomorrow morning on the radio.
Until then, happy Valentine and bless your house, dear hearts.
To be continued.
