Hi everybody and welcome inside Chickabee Schools Community Television Winter Sports
Rapids.
We take a look back on the season that was and look at the rivalry between the Pacers
and Coles.
So buckle up those seatbelts and hold on tight.
It's coming to you now on Chickabee Schools Community Television.
And welcome inside the Chickabee Schools Community Television Studios at Chickabee
Cop.
I'm your host Joe McCullough.
Welcome to the Sports Rapids.
We take a look back on the winter season that was.
We'll dive first into Girls Basketball.
The Pacers and the Coles battled on the hardwood this season for some great moments across
the year.
The Chickabee Pacers have a record of 7 and 13.
Program coming off a 2013 Western Mass Championship had the most participants and tryouts in 10
years.
For the Chickabee Cop Coles, the tournament qualification for the first time in three years
they lost an exciting quarterfinal game to Northampton High School.
It's our great year on the hardwood for both the Cop girls and the Pacers of Chickabee
High.
On to Boys Basketball where we take a look at both teams, the Pacers and the Coles participating
in a rivalry as seen here on Chickabee Schools Community Television.
The Pacers had a 7 and 13 record on the season.
It was a bounce back season for them for a team full of underclassmen.
They look poised to make a run at the tournament next season for the Coles.
It was a little bit of a better year by one game, 8 and 12, a bounce back season for them
as well.
Jamil Sam with a buzzer beater against Minnichock.
That was the season's highlight.
Sam, a great player, senior going to be moving on, but the Pacers and the Coles both had
great seasons bouncing back from what was struggling in years past.
Let's take a look at girls swimming.
We're moving on, firing away, rapid fire on the winter sports wrap up.
The 9 and 2 record for the Chickabee Pacers girls, 6-0 in their league, undefeated.
Third league title in a row, a division one commit.
Colleen Hummel, she's going to San Jose State University, multiple state championship qualifying
swimmers and Hummel, Kazaker, DeMario Harris, and two school relay records for the Lady
Pacers.
The Lady Coles, it was a 9 and 4 season.
Jarrona Beck and Haley Chapter Lane qualified for state diving championships.
Congratulations to them for the boys swimming, a 12 and 1 record for Comp.
They captured their third consecutive league championship for the Pacers, a 3-7 and 1 record.
They look to bounce back next season.
And one of my favorite sports is ice hockey.
The Chickabee Pacers made it all the way to the Western Mass finals, only to lose.
And the Coles had a resurgent season battling all the way to the playoffs.
Let's take a look at some of the highlights from this great season for both squads.
The Chickabee Pacers 12-7 and 1, they had a great season led by Ryan Caseroid.
Caseroid had 100 points on the season, a great achievement for a great player in the Pacer
uniform.
Congratulations to the Western Mass tournament for the second consecutive year, only to lose
to another team that was much better than they were, at least for one night.
First victory of the season came from South Hadley and Holyoke in the Western Mass final
since 2007, Ryan Caseroid with, as I mentioned before, his 100th point against none other
than Chickabee Comp.
For the Coles hockey team, they were 10-6 and 4, Travis Seymour with 100 points of his
own, Travis, another great hockey player from Chickapee.
They made it to the Western Mass quarterfinals, but unfortunately didn't move past that.
Both teams had a great year, congrats to the hockey squads, we look forward to seeing you
back on the ice next season.
Moving on, indoor track will start with the girls.
Indoor track for Chickapee High had a tough season at 1-9, the Coles indoor track team
was 2-4 for the Coles.
For the Coles boys, indoor track squad 4-2, they were league champions once again, Joshua
Douglas, top 5 in states for hurdles, and for the boys track over at Chickapee High
School, 3-7, not that great of a year, but they're moving their way for Kyle Deion, Derek
Dobos, and Tyler Studevent led the way in Western Mass qualifying.
Our second to last sport of the afternoon is wrestling, 4-12 for the Chickapee Pacers,
the team placed fourth in the Western Mass Championship.
You're seeing here our first televised wrestling match in city history, seen here on Chickapee
School Community Television.
For the Coles, Jason Vargas, 126-pound Western Mass Champion, they captured the Burger Cup
over Chickapee High School, congratulations to them on what was a great season credit
to everybody in the Chickapee wrestling community that built both these squads up that was once
just a single team.
They split and the teams have seen great success yet, great job by everybody involved
in building that sport in our city.
Back to cheerleading, the Chickapee High School cheerleading squad won the Western Mass Championship
for cheerleading and the Chickapee Cop team participated in the local tournaments.
Both teams did across the season and fair will in those tournaments, congratulations
to the cheerleading squads that did a great job, congratulations to them for all that
they did this season.
We're going to take a quick break, you'll hear from our sponsors, we'll be right back
on the Chickapee Sports Wrap.

And welcome back to the Winter Sports Wrap, I'm Joe McCullough, thank you for joining
us for the second half of the program.
I'm now joined by four students from Chickapee High Schools, Ryan Kazaroy, a hockey player
for Chickapee High School, Kayla Hummel, an indoor track athlete for Chickapee High School,
Jamil Sam from Chickapee Comp Basketball and Carolyn Roberts Basketball from Chickapee
Comp.
Guys, you were here on the stage together but when you guys are on the field against
each other it's one of the best rivalries in sports.
I'll start with you Ryan, you come from a unique perspective, you're the grandson of
Chickapee Comp legend Dan Dolchino's.
The blue and gold had run deep in your family but now it's a little bit of pacer pride.
I embrace putting on the maroon and gold every time we play comp because it is special
every time you get a chance to play them with the family ties we have for both schools
and it's a lot of fun and I'd message to all the young kids would be to embrace it
and enjoy the four years while you have it because it's fun to go watch the two teams
go at it but it's even more fun to be involved in the game and be a part of it.
You were around the comp team while your grandfather was coaching for a long time, what was it
that you liked to see and put maroon and gold on its head for the first time?
Well I think last year was the first time that he accepted wearing that hat, we gave
it to him a few years ago but that was the first time I've ever seen him put it on and
it's a little different at first just seeing him wearing that it's a little weird but I've
gotten used to it and he likes watching us play so it's good.
Ryan a member of the hockey team scored his 100th point this year congratulations.
Also with us is Kayla Hummel an indoor track athlete at Chica B.I.
You come from a little bit of a different perspective than Ryan or anyone else here,
indoor track while it's a team sport has a little bit of a more individual spin on it,
what's it like to go up against comp in that way?
I think it makes it a lot different because it's almost like you going against comp even
though you have your team as support and since a lot of my friends went to comp sometimes
it's almost fun going against them because it makes the rivalry a little different because
it's like you and them instead of your team and their team so I think it makes it a little
more competitive sometimes but it's still the same, it's still fun.
And Jamil Sam as I mentioned a basketball player for Chica B comp.
Those Chica B comp, Chica B high basketball games we've covered them for a number of years
at Chica B community television no matter what records when those two schools come together
it's one of the best basketball games you ever see.
What's it like to compete on that level with packed gymnasiums against Chica B high school?
It's the biggest games of your life you know especially if you don't make the playoffs
or anything you have to play in front of a whole crowd, a big gym, everyone's watching
you, it's all eyes on you, you have the little guys watching you, the suburban teams and
it's you know it's just fun to represent your school and your city.
Caroline you take part in something similar to what Jamil does, the teams on the girls
side, packed gymnasium probably the biggest crowd you'll ever play in front of.
How exciting is that and what a perspective do you put on that?
Well personally I don't play a lot for the basketball team but like being there and on
the team it's amazing like seeing everyone there and usually we don't get a lot of fans
when and during the regular season but when we're playing Chica B high it's like it's
crazy, it's everyone screaming and it's like a playoff game even if you don't make it but
it's amazing.
You guys have played sports for your high schools for a number of years and you've
done it in different spring, fall, summer, those types of things.
Favorite moment playing against comp?
Favorite moment playing against comp was probably our last hockey game, it was a little bit
of sweet but I've known most of those guys for years and grown up playing with those
guys and I think what's most important between the high comp games is just the friendships
that you build.
We go through the handshake line after the game and it's actually funny that one of the
kids we had plans we were going on to dinner after the game so I said hey we're still on
for dinner after even though you just beat us and he said yeah we are so we laughed about
that and we had a good time.
Well the Pacers got the last laugh in that one making it to the western mass finals.
Kayla, how about your perspective, what is your favorite moment as a traffic athlete
against comp?
Probably going to PVACs in western mass and seeing all the other people who you've known
for so long and have competed against so long, seeing them achieve their goals even though
it is the rivalry, sometimes it's nice to see that they're doing just as well as you
have to.
Jamil, you've seen a ton of success in the basketball court, favorite moment against
Chick-A-B-High?
It would probably have to be my sophomore year, I didn't play a lot but it was the
one time we beat Chick-A-B-High when I was with our city player and ended in a dunk
by Conor Cludier, I don't know if anyone remembers, that was probably the funnest moment.
And how about you Carolyn, in your time as an athlete at Chick-A-B-Com, your favorite
moment against the Pacers?
Mine was this year playing them at Long Meadow I think it was, it was in a tournament and
it was the first time we beat them while I was on varsity which was junior senior year
and so being them for the first time it was like, it was a good feeling.
Well you guys have all established great memories playing against each other, folks it's the
best rivalry in sports, bar none, forget the Red Sox and Yankees, it's Chick-A-B-Com
and Chick-A-B-High and you can catch all those games on Chick-A-B Schools Community Television
and I want to thank Ryan, Kazaroid, Kayla Hummel, Jamil Sam and Carolyn Roberts for joining us.
This is then the winter sports wrap on Chick-A-B-School's Community Television, we're glad you could
join us, we'll see you after this play.
