From the Port of Laverneau we travel along what was once a Roman road for 25km to reach
pizza, passing many old churches.
Arriving at the car park there is quite a distance to walk before entering the medieval town of Pisa.
Building the tower commenced in the 13th century but the soft alluvial soil was unable to support the weight
and over the years it has taken on a precarious lean.
Many attempts have been made over the years to correct the lean but the most feasible has been to stabilise the structure.
The council and church do not want the tower straightened as its lean attracts countless tourists who contribute considerably to the local economy.
The whole site is dedicated to tourism with horse carriage rides, restaurants and hawkers abound everywhere in the ground.
Returning to the bus we head back to the boat and then on to Rome.
We head back to the port of Laverneau.
