In this lesson we're going to be looking at doing basic timeline cutting.
This is going to be very similar to what we did in a similar lesson in the audio section
except we're going to be working with both video and audio together.
So I'm going to start here by going over to my assets.
Remember I opened a video bin and I can see my assets here on the left hand side.
And as I scroll through them I can see all of the pieces of video that Thomas shot with
a little ZI8 camera, that's the interview and other bits as well.
So now I'm going to do a little basic cut.
I'm going to take the sequence starting in the office with a wide shot.
So I double click on the wide shot there and it comes up in my viewer, in my source viewer
and now I can just play that and see what I've got.
Okay so it's a little bit of a sound up there.
So I'm going to take an in point from here and I'm going to play.
Now we should have 9 seconds or 10 seconds.
Remember we did the counting 1 and 2 and kept the camera still.
I normally come in just a little bit and I'm going to finish a little bit.
So I'm going to have like maybe 3 or 4 seconds here.
1 and 2 and 3 and 4, okay that's nice and then I'm just going to drag it by dragging
over there and putting it onto my timeline.
Now you can see here I have video 1, 2 and 3 correspondingly audio 1, 2 and 3 below.
Now as I dragged it on you can see here it's going to go into video and audio is going
to come into the audio 1.
Now I can change that.
I'm going to bring that down to a different audio channel in which case if I bought another
piece of video down the audio would come in here but this is just how I want it right
now.
Okay so I have that first piece of video and now I want to add the second shot.
Maybe let's go to a mid shot here.
Again double click it comes up in my source viewer.
Again I press it, in point 1 and 2, 3, 4, stop and then I'm going to drag that down.
Then finally let's go to our close up, remember we did a wide, medium and tight.
This is the tight, same thing play it 1 and 2 and 3, okay so if I drag that down into
the video layer and then just play that back let's just have a look at what we've got so
far.
Looking on the right hand side now, okay that's nice and easy.
Now we haven't had to do any cuts there, we've done all the cuts in the source.
So let's go to the interview now and look at actually how to do a cut on the interview
which is right here.
So in this case let's bring the whole interview down onto the timeline, okay now you can see
it's quite lengthy.
Now what I want to do, rather than cutting it up here in the source viewer, I'm going
to cut it on the timeline.
So here I'm going to come to the beginning of that and start playing it, okay so she's
just about to talk, let's just bring it back to where it starts.
Now again if I come down on the audio I'll be able to see here, she's going to start
talking there, can you see the waveform down here so I can see she's just about to start
talking there, it makes it easy for me to do the cut.
Now because this is at the end, the easiest way to do it is to drag it from the end, you
see how the cursor turns into this bracket shape thing and I can just drag it to that
point.
Now later we're going to use the blade tool, so let's just go through again.
Ok, now we can see again here that she's going to start finishing and we can see a
bit where we're waiting for the next question, so I want to cut out the question, I just
want to go straight to her next statement.
So she's finishing there, so I'm going to take the blade tool here over the razor tool
so it's a C and I click along the red line there and then we wait for the next question.
I can see that she's probably going to start talking about here because I can see the waveform
going up again.
Ok, so I'm going to guess that she's about to start, so I'm going to put in the blade
there, ok, so what I want to do now is take out Thomas's question there, so I take the
selection tool over here on the right in my tools palette, I click on the bit that I
don't want which is Thomas's question, I delete it, another quick press the delete
key there, another quick tip, if you select the area in between and press the delete
key again it will just bring those two together and now here we have a simple cut and we should
have her saying what her name is and then talking about her job.
Ok, that's nice and simple, just doing some basic cuts on the timeline either by doing
in the source monitor and bringing it down or by doing it actually on the timeline itself.
Ok in the next lesson we're going to talk about how to multi-layer cut, that is add
more video layers on top of each other and decide how to mix them in between.
