Hey man, here you have a first for me on the way to the greenhouse, don't you? You've got the plans on the way before the interview.
Ah, yeah, kinda.
What do you mean?
Well, it would be a fussy. I'm on my way.
Gareth, what the hell are you doing, man?
What the fuck?
What?
They're fine.
Guys, so sorry, guys. Jesus Christ, Gareth.
Sorry, you're being fussy. They'll still do the interview.
You will still do the interview.
Help me with the ropes.
Hello patrons of the internet. You join us today with beta tone distraction. First and foremost, guys, let me apologise for Gareth's earlier behaviour.
He's quite a disturbed character.
Well, I'll just forget about that, man.
We can forgive and forget and just start afresh. We'll all have a wee drink. Just get all your things pretended in that.
Cheers.
I appreciate that, guys. So, let's start off, just introduce yourselves. What you do in the band as well is always helpful.
Raymond, I'm a well, sometimes only guitarist and singer.
Fantastic.
I'm Stevie and I am the drummer.
I play bass and sometimes a bit of guitar.
Fantastic.
Thanks very much, guys.
So, what would you give us a wee bit of band history for a complete newbie to the band? How did you guys form?
Well, I was in a band previously, and Kenny went nowhere. I was getting somewhere and then we went nowhere.
So, I was only, like, a little guitarist and backing singer. I was writing lyrics as well. So, I just decided to get fed up with so many letdowns and all. So, I just did my own thing.
I was doing acoustic gigs.
Was this just solo?
Ah, solo stuff, aye. I was playing a gig one night and people weren't trying to stay there walking.
Well, we did know each other. We worked together. So, like, I think I was with 19 and Ray was with 16.
All right, so you were with 16.
All right. And we worked in a really dodgy show together. And as you do, you kind of move on and stuff like that. You didn't see, you know, it wasn't that funny.
Anything about it, to be honest?
You weren't me.
No, well, you had the usual kind of works now.
So, it's a bit like you're doing a toy one and stuff like that.
Just pick on the young lad.
But it was a pure chance because I actually did a thing with another work colleague that we've worked with.
And he was doing a sound for People, for the acoustic night.
And we went in and said, ah, Ray was the only one he was on last week's coming in.
It was all right, cool. So, I remember him for being just a wee guy, pretty much.
I mean, a little.
Just a little cheeky band.
I mean, it was obviously musical, but when we were in the show, you know, because he was 17, he wasn't really...
I was mad at him. I was mad at him, I thought.
Ah, so you weren't a musical?
I was mad at him. I thought he was James Hedfield, James.
But anyway, long story short, he turns up and, you know, he's obviously like five inches taller.
And he goes on.
He's still retaining my handsomeness now.
You had some of your own stuff going on then?
I had, kind of, I was going through a bad time at that point. I had a lot to write about, you know.
I didn't buy anything to be about the fairer sex.
I had a lot to write about, and I was doing a gig with People and Stevie.
That was the second night I was playing with Stevie.
Michael said, you know, Stevie's coming in, isn't that right, man?
I hadn't seen him in about nine years, you know.
So he came walking in, and later on I said he wasn't expecting much, you know.
I think we've established you're a Metallica fan.
Metallica bastard from the shops.
It's a good skill, man. It's a good skill we got.
Anyway, so I did my set, and I had to call up yours anyway.
I did my set, and as soon as I got off stage, I was like, man, that's got a band on there, you know.
And then we auditioned all the way, man. He saw us on the net then.
Yeah, we couldn't really put you into that.
It's taken down into a sort of strange, strange industrialist right in the middle of the coverage.
Which is where we are now.
Anyway, so, I mean, you guys have obviously been here, and you've seen the kind of, you know, conditions that you need to walk through.
To get to this place.
So like, we meet...
Is that a tub of what, English gin, I think, man?
Is that an English gin?
We met him down at the end.
The guy had never seen us before.
He'd spoke to him, you know, so all he'd been English, you know.
He must have sounded like a barking dog.
I didn't even look at him at all, you know.
So, I mean, you could kind of see his face when we pulled up and stuff, you know.
But came in, we actually had a gig set up down there.
It wasn't on the weekend or something.
It was like, I think it was Tuesday, the first countdown or something, and the gig was on the Saturday night.
So we actually thought, yeah, we had...
I think you had a couple booked for a few weeks before.
I mean, I would definitely listen to that after a couple of acts.
Just kind of jump off, like, get right into it.
I mean, it was coming back to me on fire, really, because that was, like, Tuesday or something we met you.
And I played that Saturday.
Yeah, I think that was it.
So he came down with a wee notepad and, like...
A wee notepad?
Boys, magic notepads.
Everything gets recorded, man.
Genius, man.
Sorry, I think he said the same way. It's probably the best thing that'll ever happen to you.
I mean, that...
That's a beautiful sentence.
But, I mean, it was...
Although we don't have that sexy story that we've always been telling and stuff like that,
it's totally decent, because, I mean, within the first hour, I've always been down.
It was just light years away from where we were.
We got this place primarily for just rehearsing and stuff like that.
And then, it just so happened, by chance, I managed to steal a mixer.
It has a firewire mixer, cheap off of eBay.
You stole that from your email?
Well, no, I remember...
Do you remember? I got the email from the guy I remember.
I got a really strongly worded email from this guy.
Capital.
We've seen this desk, right?
And it was, like, that's ideal.
It records 12 channels at once and stuff.
You get that.
So, like everything I do in eBay, I wait till the very last second to put a bid in.
And this guy must have just had a total hard-on to get this mixer.
And when I stepped in with two seconds to go and win it, he was like,
Ah!
About five minutes later, he sent me the most horrendous email,
just going, I, I, thanks very much.
Tell me about that, man.
Because we're going to take a picture of the mixer of the members of the unspeakable.
Have you got any plans to record anything, like, at any point this year?
Like, have you got any new kind of...
I have a lot of work, man.
I was just kind of working on this new stuff, you know.
Probably a gig at a wee bit.
Is that your kind of plan for this year?
Just kind of gig?
I just...
A bit more, just focus on songwriting.
I just expand, expand the set, and hopefully,
I'm in the old un-material.
I've got a couple of really good tunes there.
And then hopefully, I'll bring that up.
Cool.
We'll just write a gig about it, and then start recording, I guess.
So, yeah, right?
So, just decided, right?
I've just decided, that's about it, right?
I think so.
I'm trying to sort of, like, express for that bit, in terms of where we're going, as well.
So, it's an advice to play in a classroom.
The couple times we've hand-played outside, that's been pretty good.
So, it's just been a kick.
Just a question to expand that range.
Yeah.
Kind of break into new audiences and whatnot.
And so, like, I know you guys have got a website that you've got your EP on at the moment,
so if people want to check that out, you want to give us kind of the details.
Just beat-a-tone-destruction.com.
Beat-a-tone-destruction.com, nice and simple.
We'll get that up on the digital.
Yeah.
Up on the bottom of the screen, as we can do, with fancy editing techniques.
Can you do that?
Oh, aye.
This is the real deal.
So, computers and everything.
Garret will do that.
Maybe me?
Yeah.
I'm in the corner.
You're in the corner. You're in the corner for the rest of the night.
Yeah, I know.
Okay, good.
He's going back to McFlyden to be home by now?
Yeah.
So, yeah, well, that's pretty much it, guys.
Thanks for speaking to us.
Thank you, and I'd like to thank you for rescuing us.
I don't know, you have to do that.
I'm not a hattie, really.
We came here a time of a hour.
We're all friends, really.
Now, fight off.
Hi, you're joining us in the basement of Max's in the Cheetah Club.
Which is Queen Street.
It also has genuine Cheetah fur seats to take that more seriously.
We're having a new feature of On Red this week,
a movie review.
Yay!
Because everyone loves movies.
For the first of our movie reviews, we decided to go and see the movie Rango.
Rango!
So, what actually stuck you most about the movie?
I think, immediately, what stands out the most with the film is the visual style.
They really went for that western feel.
That dirty, horrible...
Every animal on that was just like...
They might have to make funny raps.
It had been bit slapped by some fucking tram.
A truck of film.
Yeah, and then stod on by a horse.
Stod on?
Stod on the horse.
Who exactly are you?
Names Rango.
The detailing and the animation is incredible as well.
It's really on a level with a lot of the Pixar movies.
Yeah, it was quite surreal as well.
A lot of the sections, if you can call them that,
in the movie industry they call them scenes,
were very surreal.
I enjoyed the film, I thought it was great.
I didn't really find Rango was entertaining enough,
but I didn't really find that he had that much of a journey to go on.
People have to believe in something.
Pick it up.
Your destiny awaits.
You are going to save us, aren't you?
Count on it, little sister.
It wasn't a very original character arc
to pursue with this kind of journey.
I have a problem with Johnny Depp.
He's Johnny Depp playing Johnny Depp yet again.
Yeah, every film he does has been,
if you go and watch,
you can see every single character he will ever be and has ever done.
Yes.
There's everything in that.
It's not like that's just,
but that's kind of like indicative of all of those movies.
Johnny Depp, he doesn't have that great of a range.
And the movies in which he does try and expand on his range,
they tend to be crap.
Isla Fisher was surprisingly good in her role.
Well, you had to tell me that that was Isla Fisher,
because she's an Australian actress.
And she, from what I hear,
I've not seen it yet,
but her grasp of accents,
when she does the Irish accent in the New Birkenhair film,
apparently is quite soul-destroying.
And any Irish people within the audience
will throw potatoes at the screen.
Yeah, maybe not.
We should have seen it.
Throw potatoes at the screen.
Potatoes.
Oh, no, she's not Irish.
Mark on the ice.
Mark on the potatoes.
Hold on, don't worry, I've got a plan.
Help!
Open the door!
Okay, plan B.
Plan B.
There was a neat little cork about her character.
Yeah, which lets not spoil, but...
Yeah, she did this thing.
She did this thing.
That was funny.
Yeah, she did funny stuff, and we enjoyed it.
Yeah.
Bill...
Oh, throughout watching the movie, and when you go...
Bill!
Bill!
Bill!
Bill!
Throughout watching the movie...
Bill at the middle.
What was the name of that?
Rattlesnake Jake?
Rattlesnake Jake.
Yeah, Rattlesnake Jake.
This is my town.
He...
Throughout watching the movie, I was like,
Who the hell is that guy?
I love the voice, and then it dawned on me.
That's Bill Mayer.
Bill Mayer.
It dawned on me, and I told you that.
Bill Mayer.
Do you know what noise...
I know it's the shit out of me.
Me.
Whatever you do, do not look down.
Whoa!
Gore Mabinski, the director,
and Johnny Depp, and Bill Mayer,
were all cast in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
Yeah.
Johnny Depp has a...
So why is Jeffrey Rushden a pop-up?
I know.
As a tiny little door mouse.
But I'm a rough voice!
So, Gareth, my good man.
My good lad.
My good lad.
My good lad.
What is your overall rating of Rango?
Rango, I give you 56 megawatts.
Excellent.
So, yeah, if you like Johnny Depp, go see him.
And if you like movie reviews, keep watching us,
because we're going to do more.
Yay!
Movie reviews!
Movie reviews!
Movie reviews!
Animals have had millions of years to adapt
to the harsh environment.
But the lizard...
He's going to die.
Ow!
What was that for?
You're a stranger.
Strangers don't last long here.
We're following after every little time.
Every little fight, but now.
But this could be everything you want.
This could be everything you need to see.
As now.
To see.
As now.
And this could be everything you want.
And this could be everything you need to see.
As now.
To see.
As now.
Is this all you?
Is this all you?
This all of me makes you come following after every little time.
Every little fight, but I hate this all of you when you're threatening me.
After every little time.
And every little fight, but I hope that this could be everything you want.
This could be everything you need to see.
As now.
To see.
As now.
Is this all you?
Is this all you?
Is this all you?
Is this all you?
Is this all you?
Is this all you?
As now.
As now.
Is this all you?
Is this all you?
Is this all you?
This all of you?
Is this all you?
We're feeling it every time
We're spending long enough
We're feeling it every time
We're feeling it every time
We're feeling it every time
