E-mail Adrian said, remember years ago when we said when we turned 40 we were going to
climb Everest and we were talked out of it by multiple friends because they thought we
might die.
So he said what about 100 miles instead?
He signed up right away.
Apparently he signed up to 100 kilometers but I fooled him into that one.
I don't ever tell my parents anymore what I'm doing because I think it stresses out
my mom.
They think it's out of the ordinary, they think it's people.
They think I'm nuts.
They constantly remind me of a car.
You can drive right because you don't have to drive.
I can say well that's anything longer than marathon distance but typically in Tuftarion.
That really is a grueling way to destroy your body.
We call it a taste of heaven and a taste of health.
It's 24,000 feet which context I think Everest is 26 or 28, 29 so I know it's like it's
up there.
I think it's too short of sanity.
I don't know why people do it.
I think with the heat today I'm starting to worry about it.
We think we're actually going to have a record number drop this year but the heat's going
to be the big thing.
I think the average finish is 68% of the people who aren't able to finish so it's quite a
high drop out for it.
A lot of them are in good shape, they're ready to go but some days 100 miles, a lot of strange
things can happen and they just not be your day.
My husband and I kind of did it as a team effort.
Our first race together was a 50 mile race and that's how we got into it.
I ran a couple of road marathons, read a book and then decided to take the ultra route.
I picked up this book called Born to Run by a guy called Alistair McDougal.
50 mile distances, 100 mile distances, some of them are sandals and stuff, I thought these
guys are nuts.
I finished my first marathon and it felt pretty good on my IED.
I wonder if there's anything I could go farther on long roads.
There is.
Many miles farther.
Running 50 miles is different than running two marathons, especially if you're an elevation
game that's 12,000 feet, it's more like running four.
It gets very, very hot during the day, it's a very long distance, people can overpace
themselves and it drops really, really cold at night.
One thing I haven't done is run at night, I folks see shadows moving, you know hallucinations
and stuff.
So that's a big first run off, but it's scary actually to think that I shoot it, I probably
shoot it on that.
I'll do it tomorrow.
I'll learn on the job.
You know, for them it's such a big goal to try to finish a hundred miler, that a lot
of them want to do it, you know, come hell or come hot, you know, high waters.
We've already seen a couple of runners who have lost four to five pounds in the first
17 miles.
26,000 calories or something, there's two weeks worth of calories, we'll burn tomorrow.
Well, that's the thing, the last six months doing all the races you learn, what to do
and what not to do, and hopefully we've got it right.
We're a commercial real estate broker, so we don't spend a lot of time outside.
We didn't want to allow you to be shaped by glory days, we thought, well, we want to have
new memories every year, that we can have stories we can tell for the rest of our life.
Best friends since we're like 11 years old, we can talk forever and we don't feel that
we have to talk, and I brought some good music as well, just in case he gets really boring
and can just ignore him.
Now he's got broad shoulders, and you know, that's good because it means then he can carry
me up the big climbs, and he's done that a few times.
A big, big cry, maybe something's done, so yeah, that'll be tough on the carry-on.
The reality is, I think in the back 50 he'll be carrying me, so can we complete a hundred
miles no matter if it's on our hands and knees, can we do it?
My goal is really to finish, because I haven't done one in 15 years, and to enjoy myself.
Finishing?
Finish with an overall cut-off.
Finish, probably, hopefully under 24.
Well, we'll see.
So, many firsts of tomorrow first are first time in high altitude, first time really running
along a long distance with somebody else, and first time running through the night, and
first time doing a hundred miles, so it's a bit mild.
