It was going on guys, this is Paul Balanagot and this is the Insider series and I am with
Robbin, the director and writer of Tadana.
That's right.
All right.
I want you to just, you are also our Super Whisker's Award winner, so I want you to just tell
the people about your film.
So the film translates to I'm Home in Japanese and it's a Japanese-American family that returns
to their former house in Northwest California and they have to rebuild their home for more
after 23 years in the internment camps in Manson.
The film is, well, the film is fictional but it's largely inspired by my own grandfather's
family and many stories.
It's kind of an amalgamation of several people that are close to them and that's where the
inspiration for the film came about.
Plus a lot of time.
Plus the free time and some good fortune in part from a lot of really awesome people
including, I'm pausing Eric, including Eric Fultonstein from one of the Associate Producers
of the World.
So we were very fortunate with the crew that made the film.
That's amazing.
Tell us a little bit about the cinematography.
I know that it's wonderful.
It looks great.
Tell us about how you went about getting it to look the way it does.
So making the DP is actually on a flight to China right now.
So it wasn't able to come today.
Flight saves me.
Yeah, right?
But he and I, let's go back a year.
So actually the first time we worked together we got into this huge argument and I went
up to the producer who was a friend of mine and said, I'm never working with this guy
ever again.
I think he knows this now so maybe if you're watching this, imagine you know this.
We didn't get a wallet group.
We had this agreement.
And probably by day two or day three of that same shoot, I think I went up to him and I
just shook his hand.
I was like, I want to work with you on everything.
Wow.
Going forward.
Wow.
And we've been really lucky to be able to maintain that, you know, that work relationship
and also that friendship for almost 10 years.
And so when we went out to make this movie, when we had talked about it for a couple of
years, probably four years, it kind of even came close to being a reality.
But he was my first...
Padre or...
I see.
Okay.
One of my first.
I don't know.
Okay.
No, no.
I had a core group of...it was Ming, Vince, Claire, if I'm missing anybody guys, I'm sorry.
Those four was Ming.
They were the first people that really started...I mean, I started involving people nine months
to 11 months before the shot.
And it was sort of just like a phone call or a meeting.
I think you could say it was three weeks off of work.
And they were brave enough to come along.
I was very lucky.
Okay.
You want me to tell people we could find somebody to work?
We could call you online, anything like that.
It's your time to just give away, man.
Yeah, right?
I don't even Google me.
I have a website you can do.
